Legendre spectral method for the fractional Bratu problem

In this paper, the Legendre spectral collocation method (LSCM) is applied for the solution of the fractional Bratu's equation. It shows the high accuracy and low computational cost of the LSCM compared with some other numerical methods. The fractional Bratu differential equation is transformed into a nonlinear system of algebraic equations for the unknown Legendre coefficients and solved with some spectral collocation methods. Some illustrative examples are also given to show the validity and applicability of this method, and the obtained results are compared with the existing studies to highlight its high efficiency and neglectable error.     

Biharmonic Maps from Tori into a 2-Sphere

Biharmonic maps are generalizations of harmonic maps. A well-known result on harmonic maps between surfaces shows that there exists no harmonic map from a torus into a sphere(whatever the metrics chosen) in the homotopy class of maps of Brower degree±1. It would be interesting to know if there exists any biharmonic map in that homotopy class of maps. The authors obtain some classifications on biharmonic maps from a torus into a sphere, where the torus is provided with a flat or a class of non-flat metrics whilst the sphere is provided with the standard metric. The results in this paper show that there exists no proper biharmonic maps of degree±1 in a large family of maps from a torus into a sphere.     

Higher Gauss maps of Veronese varieties—A generalization of Boole’s formula and degree bounds for higher Gauss map images

The image of the higher Gauss map for a projective variety is discussed. The notion of higher Gauss maps here was introduced by Fyodor L. Zak as a generalization of both ordinary Gauss maps and conormal maps. The main result is a closed formula for the degree of those images of Veronese varieties. This yields a generalization of a classical formula by George Boole on the degree of the dual varieties of Veronese varieties in 1844. As an application of our formula, degree bounds for higher Gauss map images of Veronese varieties are given.     

Pseudo-hyperbolic Gauss maps of Lorentzian surfaces in anti-de Sitter space

In this paper, we determine the type numbers of the pseudo-hyperbolic Gauss maps of all oriented Lorentzian surfaces of constant mean and Gaussian curvatures and non-diagonalizable shape operator in the 3-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. Also, we investigate the behavior of type numbers of the pseudo-hyperbolic Gauss map along the parallel family of such oriented Lorentzian surfaces in the 3-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. Furthermore, we investigate the type number of the pseudo-hyperbolic Gauss map of one of Lorentzian hypersurfaces of B-scroll type in a general dimensional anti-de Sitter space.     

Sectorial extensions for ultraholomorphic classes defined by weight functions

We prove an extension theorem for ultraholomorphic classes defined by so-called Braun–Meise–Taylor weight functions ω and transfer the proofs from the single weight sequence case from V. Thilliez to the weight function setting. We are following a different approach than the results obtained in a recent paper by the authors, more precisely we are working with real methods by applying the ultradifferentiable Whitney-extension theorem. We are treating both the Roumieu and the Beurling case, the latter one is obtained by a reduction from the Roumieu case.     

Mean curvatures and Gauss maps of a pair of isometric helicoidal and rotation surfaces in Minkowski 3-space

It is proved that, in Minkowski 3-space, a CSM-helicoidal surface, i.e., a helicoidal surface under cubic screw motion is isometric to a rotation surface so that helices on the helicoidal surface correspond to parallel circles on the rotation surface. By distinguishing a CSM-helicoidal surface as three cases, that is, the case of type I, the case of type II with negative and positive pitch, the relations are discussed between the mean curvatures or Gauss maps of a pair of isometric helicoidal and rotation surface. A CSM-helicoidal surface of Case 1 or 2 and its isometric rotation surface with null axis have same mean curvatures (resp. Gauss maps) if and only if they are minimal. But each pair of isometric CSM-helicoidal surface of Case 3 and rotation surface with spacelike axis have different Gauss maps.     

Log-convexity and log-concavity of hypergeometric-like functions

We find sufficient conditions for log-convexity and log-concavity for the functions of the forms a?∑fkk(a)xk, a?∑fkΓ(a+k)xk and a?∑fkxk/k(a). The most useful examples of such functions are generalized hypergeometric functions. In particular, we generalize the Turán inequality for the confluent hypergeometric function recently proved by Barnard, Gordy and Richards and log-convexity results for the same function recently proved by Baricz. Besides, we establish a reverse inequality which complements naturally the inequality of Barnard, Gordy and Richards. Similar results are established for the Gauss and the generalized hypergeometric functions. A conjecture about monotonicity of a quotient of products of confluent hypergeometric functions is made.
