Comparison of the toughening behavior of nylon 6 versus an amorphous polyamide using various maleated elastomers 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The toughening effect of two types of elastomers based on ethylene/α-olefin copolymers, viz, an ethylene/propylene copolymer (EPR) with its maleated version, EPR-g-MA, and an ethylene/1-octene copolymer (EOR) with its maleated versions, EOR-g-MA-X% (X=0.35, 1.6, 2.5), for two classes of polyamides: semi-crystalline nylon 6 versus an amorphous polyamide (Zytel 330 from DuPont), designated as a-PA, was explored. The results are compared with those reported earlier based on a styrenic triblock copolymer having a hydrogenated midblock, SEBS, and its maleated version, SEBS-g-MA, elastomer system. Izod impact strength was examined as a function of rubber content, rubber particle size and temperature. All three factors influence the impact behavior considerably for the two polyamide matrices. The a-PA is found to require a somewhat lower content of rubber for toughening than nylon 6. Very similar optimum ranges of rubber particle sizes were observed for ternary blends of EOR-g-MA/EOR with each of the two polyamides while blends based on mixtures of EPR-g-MA/EPR and SEBS-g-MA/SEBS (where the total rubber content is 20% by weight) show only an upper limit for a-PA but an optimum range of particle sizes for nylon 6 for effective toughening. Higher EPR-g-MA contents lead to lower ductile-brittle transition temperatures (Tdb) as expected; however, a-PA binary blends with EPR-g-MA have a much lower Tdb than do nylon 6 blends when the content of the maleated elastomer is not high. A minimum in plots of ductile-brittle transition temperature versus particle size appears for ternary blends of each of the matrices with EOR-g-MA/EOR; blends based on SEBS-g-MA/SEBS, in most cases, show higher ductile-brittle transition temperatures, regardless of the matrix. However, blends with EPR-g-MA/EPR show comparable Tdb with those based on EOR-g-MA/EOR for the amorphous polyamide but show the lowest ductile-brittle transition temperatures for nylon 6 within the range of particle sizes examined. For the blends with a bimodal size distribution, the global weight average rubber particle size is inappropriate for correlating the Izod impact strength and ductile-brittle transition temperature. Nanoadhesives of epoxy resin are synthesized and evaluated. They are organically modified by multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) (1% by weight) as reinforcement. Tensile tests are conducted on multiple identical unnotched and notched specimens to evaluate the overloading and fracture behavior of the nanoadhesives and are compared with the neat epoxy resin. In comparison with the neat epoxy, it is found that the 1% MWCNT reinforcement increased the ultimate and residual strength by about 29% and 56%, respectively. In comparison with the neat resin, there is a 265% increase in the fracture toughness of the MWCNT adhesive. Fracture surface analysis revealed the various mechanisms by which the MWCNT adhesives acquire their superior strength and toughness in comparison with the neat resin. 相似文献

This work discusses the issue of approximation in point set matching. In general, one may have two classes of approximations when tackling a matching problem: (1) an algorithmic approximation which consists in using suboptimal procedures to infer the assignment, and (2), a representational approximation which involves a simplified and suboptimal model for the original data. Matching techniques have typically relied on the first approach by retaining the complete model and using suboptimal techniques to solve it. In this paper, we show how a technique based on using exact inference in simple Graphical Models, an instance of the second class, can significantly outperform instances of techniques from the first class. We experimentally compare this method with well-known Spectral and Relaxation methods, which are exemplars of the first class. We have performed experiments with synthetic and real-world data sets which reveal significant performance improvement in a wide operating range. 相似文献

The simultaneous contrast effect is investigated in this article. A total of 174 and 154 test/induction combinations were studied for CRT and surface colours respectively. Each combination was assessed by nine observers using a matching technique. The test and induction colours used for CRT colours were similar to surface colours using fabric samples. The results indicated a strong lightness contrast effect for both CRT and surface media; that is, the lightness of a test colour surrounded by a lighter induction colour was reduced for both CRT and surface colours. The research was conducted to evaluate the effects of cellulose and polyester fibers on the properties of porous asphalt mixes, using the tests of draindown, abrasion, volumetric properties, rutting, and moisture damage. Images of scanning electron microscopy and X-ray computerized tomography were adopted to identify the microstructure of the fiber and inner stone skeleton of porous asphalt. The influence of rutting parameter (G*/sin δ) of asphalt modified by different fibers on the rutting resistance of the mixes was investigated. Based upon MOHR-COULOMB theory, the cohesion and the angle of internal friction of the mixes were derived from both indirect tension and unconfined compression strength. The experimental results indicate that fibers mainly stabilize asphalt binder and thicken asphalt film around aggregates. Furthermore, they result in the improved mechanical strength of porous asphalt mixes at high temperature slightly. From comparison analysis, cellulose fibers appear to perform better than polyester fibers in porous asphalt mixes. 相似文献

Granite is commonly recognized as an ideal medium for underground construction. However, in the site investigation for Heimifeng Pumped Storage Power Station project, it was found that there are swelling behaviors induced by alteration in granite and eventually causing slaking and disintegration of rock blocks. The study shows that hydrothermal alteration in granite is primarily due to the intrusion of multi-phase igneous magma. The clay minerals, such as montmorillonite, chlorite, kaolinite, are the main causes for the swelling behavior of granite. In the exploratory adits, alteration was observed to occur mainly along faults or fractures in the rock masses and resulted in roof caving if water is present. Some of the highly altered borehole cores swell and crack within 24 h in water and eventually disintegrate completely. From the testing results on the samples, the maximum axial free swelling strain is about 1.2%, while the maximum axial confined swelling strain is around 0.1% with swelling stress less than 25 kPa. Under free swelling tests, 80% of swelling is completed within 24 hours. Under confined swelling condition, swelling process is completed within 1 h for some samples, with 80% of maximum swelling strain finished within around 22 h for most of the samples. Contraction of samples occurs after swelling completed. The strength of granite, reflected by deformation and elastic moduli, shear strength, decreases due to alteration. The deformation and elastic moduli are even lower compared to highly weathered rock. The shear strength is between that for highly weathered and slightly weathered rocks. The swelling characteristics of the altered rock present great challenges for support or lining during construction and operation stages. Support or lining shall be in place immediately after excavation. Since the rock may swell when encountering water, the shotcrete shall be designed accordingly. During the construction of access tunnel and caverns, water shall be drained in time. Drainage directly from surface shall be avoided so as to prevent floor heave. 相似文献
