Vasopressin and the transmission of paternal behavior across generations in mated, cross-fostered Peromyscus mice.

The role of arginine vasopressin (AVP) in the nongenomic transfer of paternal behavior from fathers to offspring was examined in Peromyscus. Male California mice (P. californicus) exposed to fewer retrievals by white-footed mouse (P. leucopus) foster parents displayed fewer retrievals of biological offspring. In contrast, white-footed mice were retrieved equally rarely by California mouse foster parents and by biological parents and displayed no changes in pup retrieval behavior. AVP-immunoreactive staining in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis may predict paternal behavior because it correlated positively with retrievals and with a score consisting of huddling, grooming, and time inside the nest. Ideal-gas thermodynamic properties for natural-gas applications

Calculating caloric properties from a thermal equation of state requires information such as isobaric heat capacities in the ideal-gas state as a function of temperature. In this work, values for the parameters of thec _p ⁰ correlation proposed by Aly and Lee were newly determined for 21 pure gases which are compounds of natural gas mixtures. The values of the parameters were adjusted to selectedc _p ⁰ data calculated from spectroscopic data for temperatures ranging from 10 to 1000 K. The data sources used are discussed and compared with literature data deduced from theoretic models and caloric measurements. The parameters presented will be applied in a current GERG project for evaluating equations of state (e.g., the AGA 8 equation) for their suitability for calculating caloric properties.     

MITI projects on recycling

MITI has actively done R&D on industrial technology for waste and reclamation and so there are many research items from small scale to large scale. However, Ecofactory and researches on recycling of metallic materials are introduced here. Ecofactory was proposed by the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory and is now at the stage of the Leading Research, a new research scheme in AISt. Researches on recycling of metallic materials are being done with subsidy. The State of the Art in Text Filtering

This paper develops a conceptual framework for text filtering practice and research, and reviews present practice in the field. Text filtering is an information seeking process in which documents are selected from a dynamic text stream to satisfy a relatively stable and specific information need. A model of the information seeking process is introduced and specialized to define text filtering. The historical development of text filtering is then reviewed and case studies of recent work are used to highlight important design characteristics of modern text filtering systems. User modeling techniques drawn from information retrieval, recommender systems, machine learning and other fields are described. The paper concludes with observations on the present state of the art and implications for future research on text filtering. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

南哨水电站拱坝体型设计

南哨水电站位于雷公山暴雨中心区， 洪水峰高量大， 水库基本无滞洪削峰， 由于坝址处河床深切而狭窄， 溢洪道作拱坝坝身表孔溢流短鼻坎挑流的布置。为使溢洪道既有较好的挑流消能效果， 又能达到控制大坝工程投资的双重目的， 将混凝土拱坝体型作了一反常规的设计布置， 即河床部分悬臂梁的上部向水库倒悬呈负坡， 岸边悬臂梁渐变为竖直呈正坡； 水平拱圈曲率由高到低逐渐变小， 而曲率半径则逐渐加大。拱坝的体型适应了溢洪道作高落差挑流鼻坎的布置， 使其溢洪舌远离坝脚， 经运行１３ 年来多次洪水的检验， 在下游不做消能防冲工程措施的情况下， 保证了大坝和下游两岸岩体的稳定安全， 而大坝和溢洪道运行状态良好。

Projection center calibration by motion

Camera calibration is the first step of three-dimensional machine vision. A fundamental parameter to be calibrated is the position of the camera projection center with respect to the image plane. This paper presents a method for the computation of the projection center position using images of a translating rigid object, taken by the camera itself.

Many works have been proposed in literature to solve the calibration problem, but this method has several desirable features. The projection center position is computed directly, independently of all other camera parameters. The dimensions and position of the object used for calibration can be completely unknown.

This method is based on a geometric relation between the projection center and the focus of expansion. The use of this property enables the problem to be split into two parts. First a suitable number of focuses of expansion are computed from the images of the translating object. Then the focuses of expansion are taken as landmarks to build a spatial back triangulation problem, the solution of which gives the projection center position.     

Robustness of VS-MRAC with respect to unmodelled dynamics and external disturbances

A variable structure model reference adaptive controller (VS-MRAC) using only input and output measurements was recently proposed and shown to be globally asymptotically stable with superior transient behaviour and disturbance rejection properties. In this paper a singular perturbation approach is used in order to establish the robustness of the controller in the presence of unmodelled dynamics (parasitics) and disturbances. We develop a new Lyapunov-based technique to analyse the overall system and show that for sufficiently small parasitics the system remains stable and the output error is small in some sense.
