Objective To measure the plasma fentanyl concentrations achieved over time with transdermal fentanyl patches in awake cats and cats undergoing anesthesia and ovariohysterectomy. Study design Randomized prospective experimental study. Animals Twenty‐four purpose‐bred cats. Methods Cats were randomly assigned to three groups for Part I of a larger concurrent study. Group P received only a 25 μg hour?1 transdermal fentanyl patch. Group P/A received the patch and anesthesia. Group A received only anesthesia. After a minimum 1‐week washout period, the cats were randomly reassigned to two groups for Part II of the larger study. Group P/A/O received the patch, anesthesia and ovariohysterectomy. Group A/O received anesthesia and ovariohysterectomy. Patches were left in place for 72 hours and plasma samples were obtained for fentanyl analysis while the patches were in place, and for 8 hours after patch removal for cats in Group P, P/A, and P/A/O. Results The 25 μg hour?1 transdermal fentanyl patches were well tolerated by the cats in this study (mean body weight of 3.0 kg) and no overt adverse effects were noted. Mean plasma fentanyl concentrations over time, mean plasma fentanyl concentrations at specific times (8, 25, 49, and 73 hours after patch placement), time to first detectable plasma fentanyl concentration, time to reach maximum plasma fentanyl concentration, maximum plasma fentanyl concentration, mean plasma fentanyl concentration from 8 to 73 hours, elimination half‐life, and total area under concentration (AUC) were not statistically different among the groups. Conclusions Halothane anesthesia and anesthesia/ovariohysterectomy did not significantly alter the plasma fentanyl concentrations achieved or pharmacokinetic parameters measured, when compared with awake cats. There was a high degree of individual variability observed both within and between groups of cats in parameters measured. Clinical significance The high degree of variability observed suggests that careful observation of cats with fentanyl patches in place is required to assess efficacy and any potential adverse effects. Anesthesia and anesthesia/ovariohysterectomy do not appear to alter plasma fentanyl concentrations achieved by placement of a 25 μg hour?1 transdermal fentanyl patch when compared to cats not undergoing these procedures.  相似文献

Abstract. High rates of erosion are reported from three sites on brickearth (loess) soils in east Kent. Problems are acute where soils are used for intensive production of vegetables and salad crops. Erosion appears to be the result of structural instability, lack of crop cover for much of the year, and certain managment practices, such as ridging the soil for the crop. In the autumn of 1984, about 120 tonnes of soil was lost from rills in a field of onions: an erosion rate of about 15 t ha−1. A large field under winter cereals also eroded and this resulted in damage to property. Conservation techniques are recommended.  相似文献

To assess the effects of climate change on soil erosion we need to model changes in rate, frequency and extent of erosion. Present day rates of soil erosion for agricultural land in England and Wales are known from a national monitoring scheme and also from a local one. The latter, for the South Downs, covers a seven-year period and includes climatic data. This shows a strong correlation between total erosion and a Rainfall Index. The availability of these databases allows us to use existing models such as EPIC and an Expert System to predict erosion rates for postulated warmer and wetter (winter) conditions. EPIC is particularly suitable for specific sites where detailed data exists and crop yield implications can also be modelled. A rule-based Expert System approach allows us to examine erosion rates at a different scale across the landscape. We postulate that water erosion rates on arable land in the lowlands will increase markedly in severity, frequency and extent especially if land use changes. In the uplands predicted climatic warming suggests a longer growing season and fewer frosts: these may lead to a decrease in erosion of overgrazed eroding slopes. Increases in erosion rates are not inevitable if policy decisions are taken and implemented in good time.  相似文献

The tympanic bullae of 20 previously healthy cadaver animals were randomly filled with sterile saline or air. The heads were positioned using tape ties and a rostrocaudal open mouth radiograph taken. The resulting radiographs were assessed by a blinded ECVDI diplomate, with each tympanic bulla being recorded as being either air or fluid filled. Ultrasound examination of the bullae was performed, by a blinded assessor, using a B-mode 5 mHz sector probe (Sonotron-VingMed Sound A/S, PO Box 141, N3191, Horten, Norway) operating at 3 mHz. Each bulla was recorded as being either air or fluid filled. Results of radiography and ultrasonography were each compared to the actual status of the bulla in a chi square analysis. Sensitivity of radiography was 80%, with specificity of 65%. Ultrasonographic sensitivity was 100% and specificity 100%. Ultrasonography may in future provide a cheap, noninvasive, rapid and widely available method for diagnosing otitis media in clinical cases.  相似文献

Salt tolerance of mature Williams Bon Cretien pear trees was assessed in a field trial on a duplex, slowly permeable clay loam. The trees were irrigated with a range of salinities; electrical conductivity of irrigation water (ECw) of 0.2 to 1.4 dS/m by flood for seven years or 0.2 to 2.1 dS/m by microjet sprinklers for nine years. Water-table levels were maintained below 3 m by a groundwater pump. Yield and leaf ion content were assessed during the treatment period. Aspects of growth and physiology were monitored in the 0.2 and 2.1 dS/m microjet treatments during the seventh irrigation season.Soil profile salinities varied between 3.0 and 4.3 dS/m for the most saline flood treatment and from 1.5 to 2.6 dS/m for the most saline microjet treatment. Soil sodicity (sodium absorption ratio) increased during the experiment, reaching a maximum of 9 in the most saline treatments. The salinity treatments caused reduced yields after seven years. In the most saline treatment (ECw = 2.1 dS/m, microjet-irrigated), yield decreased to about 60 and 50% of the control in the eighth and ninth years, respectively, and 40% of trees were dead in the ninth year. Leaf ion concentrations (in January) of the most saline treatment were at excess levels (>0.1% Cl and >0.02% Na) from 1982 to 1990. There were significant (P<0.01) negative linear relationships between yield in 1990 and leaf Na and Cl, measured both in 1990 and in 1989. During the seventh season of saline irrigation, lateral shoot growth was reduced, leaves and fruit were smaller and leaf fall was earlier in the 2.1 dS/m treatment compared with the control. Dawn and midday water potential and osmotic potential were not significantly affected by saline irrigation. Midday CO2-assimilation rates (A) and leaf conductance to water vapour diffusion (g) were similar for 2.1 dS/m irrigated and control trees, however there was a trend towards a reduction in A and g of these salt-treated trees late in the irrigation season when leaf Na and Cl had increased to 250 and 240 mM (tissue water basis) respectively.  相似文献

An 8-year-old, male domestic shorthair cat was referred to the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with a 3-day history of lethargy, inappetance, hyperemic skin nodules, coughing, and vomiting. Laboratory results included nonregenerative anemia, lymphopenia, thrombocytopenia, hypoalbuminemia, hyponatremia, and increased alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase activities. Cytology of the skin nodules revealed many spindle- to crescent-shaped protozoal organisms, with morphology consistent with Toxoplasma gondii or Neospora caninum. Gross necropsy, histopathologic, immunohistochemical, and transmission electron microscopic findings confirmed a systemic protozoal infection; however, the organism exhibited characteristics of both N caninum and T gondii. Diagnosis of a T gondii-like infection was based on internal structures of the organism and positive reaction to rabbit polyclonal antibodies to T gondii. Reports of toxoplasmic dermatitis are rare in the cat and dog, and this is the first reported diagnosis of T gondii-like protozoa in skin aspirates.  相似文献

Dermatomyositis is an inflammatory disease of the skin and muscle and is most commonly found in the Shetland sheepdog. Both the clinical presentation and the age of onset of dermatomyositis vary widely, and the inability to diagnose dermatomyositis before clinical symptoms ensue has made control of the disease difficult. Identification of a genetic marker that cosegregates with dermatomyositis would facilitate the development of a DNA-based test for the early detection of affected dogs. We report the use of linkage disequilibrium (LD) mapping to identify linkage to phenotypic dermatomyositis in the Shetland sheepdog. One marker, microsatellite marker FH3570 on canine chromosome 35, had evidence of LD (P=0.00002). Further studies are necessary to narrow the region harbouring the dermatomyositis locus, identify candidate genes and determine mode of inheritance.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between bispectral index (BIS) and minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) multiples of sevoflurane in cats. ANIMALS: 8 domestic cats. PROCEDURE: Each cat was anesthetized twice with sevoflurane. First, the MAC of sevoflurane for each cat was determined by use of the tail clamp method. Second, cats were anesthetized with sevoflurane at each of 5 MAC multiples administered in random order. Ventilation was controlled, and after a 15-minute equilibration period at each MAC multiple of sevoflurane, BIS data were collected for 5 minutes and the median value of BIS calculated. RESULTS: The mean (+/- SD) MAC of sevoflurane was 3.3 +/- 0.2%. The BIS values at 0.5 MAC could not be recorded as a result of spontaneous movement in all 8 cats. The BIS values at 2.0 MAC were confounded by burst suppression in all 8 cats. Over the range of 0.8 to 1.5 MAC, BIS values decreased significantly with increasing end-tidal sevoflurane concentrations. Mean (+/- SD) BIS measurements were 30 +/- 3, 21 +/- 3, and 5 +/- 2 at 0.8, 1.0, and 1.5 MAC, respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Values of BIS are inversely and linearly related to end-tidal sevoflurane concentrations in anesthetized cats, and BIS may be a useful predictor of CNS depression in this species. The consistently low BIS values recorded in this study suggest that clinical BIS end points used to titrate anesthetic agents in humans may not be applicable to cats.  相似文献
