Micropropagules can Profitably Save the Choicest Silk Banana from Extinction

Panama wilt, a deadly disease of banana in general and Silk group in particular, is creating havoc worldwide. Infected planting material being a major mode of disease spread, production of disease free quality planting material is a must for area expansion. Micropropagation offers a viable solution for overcoming this problem. Though protocols for micropropagation have been standardized for various varieties of banana, their in field trials along with the conventional propagules have seldom been made. This study deals with agronomic, phenological and post harvest attributes of in vitro propagated plantlets of Silk banana var. Nanjanagud Rasabale in comparison to their traditional counterparts. Tissue cultured plantlets were superior to sucker derived plants in terms of vegetative growth, yield and quality parameters. Further micropropagules were precocious by eight weeks and exhibited synchronized flowering.     

Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction in Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is commonly associated with bladder dysfunction, which is frequently reported to be the worst aspect of the disease. Patients may experience bothersome bladder symptoms early in the course, and this should be explored. If necessary, a formal evaluation of the lower urinary tract should be offered. The type of bladder dysfunction may also change with time, which highlights the need for continual follow-up assessments. Anticipated problems are incomplete bladder emptying and disorders with urine storage, which may occur simultaneously. This may lead to symptoms of overactive bladder and recurrent urinary tract infections. Conservative measures for management should be used initially while other sinister pathology is excluded. Newer treatments such as botulinum toxin A and neural stimulation techniques are replacing more invasive surgical procedures. Treatment approaches have been described and should be offered by teams who are familiar with patients having uro-neurological complaints.     

Interventional Sialendoscopy for Parotid Ductal Calculi: Our Preliminary Experience

With this article we present our initial experience with interventional sialendoscopy of the parotid duct for the parotid calculi. We carried out a prospective study of patients of parotid calculi in a tertiary referral centre. Diagnostic and interventional sialendoscopy was performed in five cases of parotid calculi. The outcome was classified on the basis of clearance of the lumen of the duct and resolution of symptoms. Diagnostic sialendoscopy was able to diagnose the calculus in all cases. Interventional sialendoscopy was done under general anesthesia in all cases and calculus was successfully removed. The average size of sialolith was 8.2 mm. No complications occurred in any of the cases. Check sialendoscopy was done in all cases after a minimum follow up of 6 months, which showed the duct lumen to be free of stone with no stricture of the duct. Sialendoscopy is an optimal technique for removal of intraductal parotid calculi and avoids removal of the gland. In our series there was no associated morbidity and complication.     

Aggressive Angiomyxoma of Inguinoscrotal Region Mimicking Inguinal Hernia: a Case Report

We are reporting a case of a 53-year-old gentleman who presented with a long standing inguinoscrotal swelling misdiagnosed as inguinal hernia, for which he underwent incomplete excision at local hospital and then was referred to our centre for completion surgery.     

Syphilis and vision loss: A role for point-of-care ultrasound

Vision loss in young adults is relatively rare. In patients with suspected HIV or syphilis, the risk of developing vision loss is increased, and should alert the emergency physician of specific retinal pathologies. We present a case of a 33-year-old man with recently identified syphilis and HIV, who was diagnosed with bilateral retinal detachments (RDs) with the help of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in the setting of panuveitis (preventing visualization with direct fundoscopy).
