Effect of metallization on the power flow angle of SH0 waves in thin piezoelectric plates

The anisotropy of the angle between the phase and group velocity (power flow angle, PFA) as well as the influence of electrical boundary conditions on this angle have been studied for shear-horizontal fundamental (SH₀) acoustic waves in thin piezoelectric plates of lithium niobate (LNO) and potassium niobate (KNO). Both LNO and KNO crystals possess orientations at which the PFA for SH₀ waves reaches large values (17° and 48°, respectively). It is established that metallization of the piezoelectric plate surface can significantly change PFA values, in particular, by 18° and 55° for Y-X + 25° cut plates of LNO and KNO, respectively.

Costosternal chondrodynia (Tietze's syndrome variant) should be considered in those rare patients who present with severe breast pain several months after reconstructive breast surgery. The authors treated 25 cases, 3 of which are discussed in detail, where the origin of the pain was traced to the costosternal cartilages. The differential diagnosis and management of this hitherto undescribed problem after breast surgery are discussed.     

Stretched polytene chromosomes--model for studying the functional organization of eukaryotic chromosomes

To localize functional loci on cytological maps of polytene chromosomes we propose to use 10-100 times stretched chromosomes. Three different ways of stretchening are briefly considered: the squash tissue preparation, when chromosomes are stretched by hydrodynamical forces; the treatment of isolated polytene chromosomes in 10-minus 4M EDTA OR 0.8M NaCL with subsequent change of these solution for saline when abrupt structural changes occur in chromosomes and they become morphologically homogeneous threads (Gruzdev and Belaya, 1973); and, finally, the use of microneedles of the micromanipulator. After an intense (ca. 100 times) stretchening, the autoradiography is sufficient to localize the loci within one micron length of double helical DNA molecule.     

Possible mutagenic activity of beef irradiated with gamma-rays in its raw and roast form and its influence on the reproductive function of white rats

With albino rats fed on beef irradiated raw with gamma-rays in a dose of 0.6 Mrad (given to animals cooked) and on fried meat irradiated with gamma-rays in a dose of 0.8 Mrad the mutagenic properties of these products and their effect on the sexual glands of male-rats were studied. The mutagenic activity of the irradiated meat products was assessed with reference to induction of dominant lethal mutations, the gonadotropic effect being judged about by the functional state of the sexual glands in the male rats. Within the limit of described experiment no mutagenic and gonadotropic influence of the irradiated study products was detected.     

Spatial relationships of electrical activity during reproduction of verbal signals in children

The study of intercentral correlations of the brain biopotentials in five-to six year old children revealed considerable differences in the spatial distribution of interrelations of the neocortex projection and associative zones during reproduction of familiar and unfamiliar words. Reproduction of familiar words was accompanied by the greatest enhancement of interrelations of associative structures (infraparietal, frontal areas and Broca speech centre) with projection zones of the motor and acoustic analysers in the left hemisphere, while reproduction of unfamiliar words was attented with closer connections of the projection motor zone with the temporal and the anterior associative (frontal and speech) zones in the right hemisphere. The facts obtained testify to the existence of the interhemispheric asymmetry and to the different involvement of the neocortex projection and associative zones in the organization of motor speech in children.
