To develop and validate meshes for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of transport in fixed beds, a single particle is often used as a test case. We present results for drag coefficient (CD) and heat transfer Nusselt number (Nu) for flow past a sphere, focusing on high flow rates typical of industrial steam reformers (400 < Re < 20,000). Over this range, good predictions of CD were obtained using large eddy simulation (LES) to capture vortex shedding and wake dynamics, with a mesh refined downstream from the sphere. The small time-steps and high cell count required make this too expensive for fixed beds. Nu can be accurately calculated using a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) method with shear-stress transport (SST) k-ω closure provided the mesh at the particle surface is fine enough and covers most of the boundary layer. Single sphere simulations of heat transfer are more useful for fixed bed mesh development than drag coefficient calculations.  相似文献

Platform chips, which are pre-designed chips possessing numerous processors, memories, coprocessors, and field-programmable gates arrays, are becoming increasingly popular. Platforms eliminate the costs and risks associated with creating customized chips, but with the drawbacks of poorer performance and energy consumption. Making platforms highly configurable, so they can be tuned to the particular applications that will execute on those platforms, can help reduce those drawbacks. We discuss the trends leading embedded system designers towards the use of platforms instead of customized chips. We discuss UCR research in designing highly configurable platforms, highlighting some of our work in highly configurable caches, and in hardware/software partitioning.  相似文献

Robotic eye-in-hand configuration is very useful in many applications. Essential in the use of this configuration is robotic hand-eye calibration. The method proposed in this paper, calibrating the optical axis of the camera and a target pattern, creates an environment for camera calibration without using additional equipment. By using the geometric relation between the optical axis and the robot hand, calibration of the optical axis and the target pattern becomes a feasible process. The proposed method requires identification of the points intersected by the optical axis with the target pattern. Image-processing techniques for identifying these intersection points are developed and implemented by designing the target pattern with a checkerboard pattern. The accuracy issue of the proposed method is discussed. Finally, experimental results are presented to verify the proposed method.  相似文献

Sufficient variation exists in how people smoke each cigarette that the number of cigarettes smoked daily and the years of smoking represent only crude measures of exposure to the toxins in tobacco smoke. Previous research has shown that spent cigarette filters can provide information about how individuals smoke cigarettes. Digital image analysis has been used to identify filter vent blocking and may also provide an inexpensive, unobtrusive index of overall smoke exposure. A total of 1,124 cigarette butts smoked by 53 participants in a smoking topography study were imaged and analyzed. Imaging showed test-retest reliability of more than 95% among those smoking their own brand. Mean color scores (CIELAB system) showed acceptable stability (>.60) across days, paralleling the basic stability of smoking topography measures across waves. A principal components scoring showed that center tar staining, edge tar staining, and their interaction were significantly related to total smoke volume, accounting for 73% of the variation. Estimated smoke volume was a significant predictor of salivary cotinine when accounting for cigarettes smoked per day. These data suggest that digital image analysis of spent cigarette butts can serve as a reliable proxy measure of total smoke volume.  相似文献

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to simulate non-reacting heat transfer in a steam reforming packed reactor tube of tube-to-particle diameter ratio (N) equal to 4, with cylindrical multi-hole catalyst particles. These simulations extend those of our previous study [Nijemeisland, M., Dixon, A.G., Stitt, E.H., 2004. Catalyst design by CFD for heat transfer and reaction in steam reforming. Chemical Engineering Science 59, 5185-5191] to provide accurate tube wall temperatures, runs at constant pressure drop in addition to those at constant mass flow rate and simulations of particles with different sizes of holes. At constant pressure drop, particles with higher void fractions allowed higher mass flow rates, resulting in tube wall temperatures and radial temperature profiles in order: solid cylinders>one-hole particles>multi-hole particles. Little difference was seen between three-hole and four-hole particles. The particles with multiple holes gave a substantial reduction in tube wall temperature, with only a small decrease in core tube heat transfer. The effect of hole size was small, for the cases investigated in this study.  相似文献

Extrusion is a widely used process for forming suspensions and pastes into designed shapes, and is central to the manufacture of many products. In this article, the extrusion through a square‐entry die of non‐Brownian spheres suspended in Newtonian fluid is investigated using discrete element simulations, capturing individual particle‐particle contacts and hydrodynamic interactions. The simulations reveal inhomogeneous velocity and stress distributions, originating in the inherent microstructure formed by the constituent particles. Such features are shown to be relevant to generic paste extrusion behavior, such as extrudate swell. The pressure drop across the extruder is correlated with the extrudate flow rate, with the empirical fitting parameters being linked directly to particle properties such as surface friction, and processing conditions such as extruder wall roughness. Our model and results bring recent advances in suspension rheology into an industrial setting, laying foundations for future model development, predictive paste formulation and extrusion design. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 3069–3082, 2017  相似文献

The chemical reactions taking place in the chemical reactor form the heart of any chemical process. Reaction kinetics are the translation of our understanding of the chemical processes into a mathematical rate expression that can be used in reactor design and rating. Because of the importance of correct and safe design of chemical reactors, chemical reaction kinetics is a key aspect of research and development in chemical industries, in research institutes, and academic centers, as well as in industrial laboratories. There is, and there will always be, a strong need for knowledge and a skill base concerning the determination of reaction kinetics and their application in the form of a kinetic model. This paper is a result of cooperation within Eurokin, a consortium of over 10 European companies and 4 universities. An industrial questionnaire in 1995 highlighted that industry is not only a little conservative in the methods it uses to determine kinetics, but also that there was a wide awareness of the scope for improvement. Eurokin was thus founded in 1998 to try and establish the best practices and to facilitate development work in kinetics and associated areas. The paper briefly explains some underlying theory of heterogeneously catalyzed chemical reactions and their kinetics. It deals specifically with the acquisition of kinetic data, and gives recommendations for the selection of the experimental reactor and conditions. A primary aim of this paper is discuss kinetic experimentation and modeling through a series of case studies, attempting to illustrate good practice, methods in kinetic modeling, pitfalls, and recommendations. The paper closes with some recommendations and a perspective on the future needs of industrial reaction kinetics.  相似文献

Planar laser‐induced fluorescence (PLIF) and electrical resistance tomography (ERT) were applied simultaneously to monitor the mixing performance of a KM static mixer for the blending of non‐Newtonian fluids of dissimilar rheologies in the laminar regime. The areal distribution method was used to obtain quantitative information from the ERT tomograms and the PLIF images. Comparison of the ERT and PLIF results demonstrates the ability of ERT to detect the mixing performance in cases of poor mixing within the resolution of the measurement, though the accuracy decreases as the condition of perfect mixing is approached. Thus, ERT has the potential to detect poor mixing within the confines of its resolution limit and the required conductivity contrast, providing potential rapid at‐line measurement for industrial practitioners.  相似文献

In order to clarify the influence of inflammatory mediators of the arachidonic acid cascade in the mechanism of nasal polyp growth, peptido-leukotriene (pLT), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and thromboxane B2 (TXB2) synthesis was investigated. In addition to several stimuli, functionally intact human biopsy specimens of polypous and normal tissue were incubated. Especially remarkable was the significantly increased release of pLT by polypous tissue upon arachidonic acid stimulation, in contrast to only slightly elevated PGE2 release compared to normal tissue. Basic release of pLT and PGE2 was similar for polypous and normal tissue. Examining TXB2 release, no significant difference was observed with regard to the origin of tissues. These data support an altered pattern of the lipoxygenase and cyclo-oxygenase pathways when tissue becomes irritated and suggest their involvement in the aetiopathogenesis of nasal polyps.  相似文献
