A relatively simple and more economical process of open die hot pressing has been employed in preparing high density yttrium iron garnet samples of fine grain size (~ 1–2 μM). The samples have been investigated for the microstructure dependent spinwave line-width (ΔHk) and FMR line-width (ΔH). The values of ΔHk and ΔH are in fair agreement with the samples having the same grain size but prepared by the conventional hot pressing using refractory dies. 相似文献

We report the formation and characterization of copper nanostructures, nanotubules and nanothreads, which were obtained by electrical arc evaporation of Cu electrodes under varied conditions of He ambience. Electrical arc evaporation was done with approximately 10 V and (approximately 50-100 A) DC current. The current was used in a pulse mode. The evaporated material was condensed on a formvar-coated Cu grid mounted on a liquid N2-cooled specimen holder. Transmission electron microscopy was employed to characterize the condensed materials. These investigations revealed that the condensed materials consisted of the mentioned nanostructures. Nanotubes and nanothreads are formed for a He pressure in the chamber corresponding to approximately 140 and approximately 500 torr, respectively. Extensive electron microscopic investigations showed that the diameter of the nanotubes varied from approximately 5 nm to approximately 50 nm and their length from 2 microns to 3 microns. 相似文献

In an operating plant quick reporting of the status of long-lived alpha activity concentrations in the work atmosphere is required. This will help in taking any corrective control measures if required. Radon and thoron progeny concentrations prevalent in the general atmosphere predominantly interfere in measurement of long-lived alpha activity in air. The alpha counts due to radon and thoron progeny vary widely in many atmospheric conditions. Therefore, conventionally, 5 days delay is allowed for all interfering activity to decay completely and true alpha air activity is then estimated. An approach for quick assessment of long-lived alpha activity by eliminating interference due to radon and thoron progeny in air, is made here. Based on the study of the pattern of alpha count rate due to radon and thoron progeny in air, a method for estimation of long-lived alpha activity within 8 hours delay time is suggested in this paper. 相似文献

Metal phthalocyanine complexes (MPc; M = Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+ and Al3+) encapsulated in zeolite-Y exhibit high catalytic activity for the cycloaddition of CO2 to epichlorohydrin and propylene oxide yielding the corresponding cyclic carbonates. The catalysts could be separated easily from the reaction mixture and reused with little loss in activity. A combination of immuno-electron microscopy and electron energy-loss spectrum-imaging was used to map the distributions of endocrine polypeptide hormones and proteins in mouse pancreatic islet of Langerhans. Tissue was analyzed from control animals and from mice that were heterozygous for the Anx7 gene, which defines a Ca2+/GTP-dependent membrane fusion and ion channel protein. The heterozygous Anx7 (+/-) mouse displays defects in IP3 receptor mediated Ca2+ signaling and insulin secretion. Therefore, information was obtained about the distributions of the hormones insulin and glucagon, as well as the proteins ANX7 and the IP3 receptor. Insulin secretion appears to be defective in the mutants. It was found from immunolabeling experiments that expression of the IP3 receptor is reduced in mutant islets compared to control islets. Subcellular distributions of sulfur and nitrogen obtained by electron energy-loss spectrum-imaging showed that the insulin concentrations of beta granules were essentially the same in control and mutant islets. By contrast, immunogold labeling of mutant islets shows more insulin immunoreactivity in the beta granules. It follows that insulin may be packaged differently in mutant islets, making antigenic determinants more available to the labeling antibody. The increased rate of insulin secretion in the hyperplastic mutant islets can be explained by compensatory increases in islet size, rather than by an increased insulin concentration in the beta cells. The results indicate that reduced ANX7 expression leads to defects in the IP3 receptor expression in the endocrine cells of the mutant mouse. Increased size of the islet or of adrenal medulla may be a compensatory mechanism for secretion defect by individual endocrine cells. Defects in IP3 receptor expression, and documented consequences of a Ca2+ signaling defect, lead to other changes in organelles such as the mitochondrial number in islet beta-cells. The effects and consequences of reduced ANX7 expression on mitochondria are evident in ultrastructural observations. 相似文献

Recent studies have suggested that factors in the target tissue influence the degree of plasticity and regeneration following aging and/or specific insults. We have investigated whether young or aged targets differ in their noradrenergic innervation from fetal locus coeruleus (LC) neurons, and also if a specific growth factor, glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) can affect this innervation pattern. Tissue pieces of fetal brainstem and young (3 months) or old (18 months) iris tissue were transplanted simultaneously into the anterior chamber of the eye of adult hosts. We found that aged iris transplants became innervated to a significantly lesser degree by the cografted LC neurons than young iris transplants. Fetal hippocampal tissue was then grafted to adult hosts, and a fetal brainstem graft containing LC neurons was placed adjacent to the first graft, either at 3 or 21 months post-grafting. Thus, old/young chimeras of the noradrenergic coeruleo-hippocampal pathway were created. Aged hippocampal grafts received a much less dense innervation from co-grafted LC neurons than young hippocampal grafts. Tyrosine hydroxylase-positive-immunoreactive innervation was only found in the outskirts of aged grafts, while the young hippocampal grafts contained an even innervation pattern. The innervation density of hippocampal grafts was significantly enhanced by GDNF treatment. These findings demonstrate that target-derived factors may regulate neuronal plasticity, and that the age of the target is more important for innervation properties than the age of the neuron innervating a particular target. 相似文献

To determine whether profiles of predictor variables provide incremental prediction of college student outcomes, the authors 1st applied an empirical clustering method to profiles based on the scores of 2,771 entering college students on a battery of biographical data and situational judgment measures, along with SAT and American College Test scores and high school grade point average, which resulted in 5 student groups. Performance of the students in these clusters was meaningfully different on a set of external variables, including college grade point average, self-rated performance, class absenteeism, organizational citizenship behavior, intent to quit their university, and satisfaction with college. The 14 variables in the profile were all significantly correlated with 1 or more of the outcome measures; however, nonlinear prediction of these outcomes on the basis of cluster membership did not add incrementally to a linear-regression-based combination of these 14 variables as predictors.
