To evaluate the reversibility of neural function in the brainstem following ischemia, we investigated the effect of transient brainstem ischemia on the brainstem auditory evoked potential in gerbils. Brainstem ischemia was produced by bilateral extracranial occlusion of vertebral arteries. Local cerebral blood flow was measured by quantitative autoradiography after 5 min of ischemia and was reduced to less than 3 ml/100 g per min in the pons and lower midbrain, indicating severe and reproducible brainstem ischemia. During brainstem ischemia, brainstem auditory evoked potential waveforms disappeared completely. After a brief ischemic insult (5 min), all four brainstem auditory evoked potential components recovered to normal. After longer ischemic insults (10-30 min), brainstem auditory evoked potential components never recovered to normal. Microtubule-associated protein 2 immunoreactivity revealed differential vulnerability of the acoustic relay nuclei in the brainstem. Neurons in the lateral lemniscus were most vulnerable, followed in order by neurons in the trapezoid body, the superior olive and the cochlear nucleus. We also demonstrated a close relationship between the reversibility of ischemia-induced changes on brainstem auditory evoked potential and ischemic lesions of these relay nuclei. These data may be useful for evaluating the therapeutic window of thrombolytic therapy during acute vertebrobasilar occlusion.  相似文献

Colloid particles have superlong-range attractive and repulsive forces. The distance between the secondary minimum of the potential energy of the interaction and the surface of the colloid is of the order of several μm and several tens of μm. These interactions clearly appear in the distribution of order-solution phase coexistence, in gathering particles to the ordered phase and in spontaneous pair formation. A new ‘Dynamic electrical multipole model and resonance effect’ is given. From this model, it is predicted that pairs will form in a shear field even in highly concentrated salt solution. Pair formation was observed after 24 hours as predicted.  相似文献

Previous studies have demonstrated that classical inbred strains of laboratory mice do not exhibit large genetic distances when simple sequence repeats (SSRs) are used to test for their polymorphisms whereas mice from wild origin exhibit high polymorphisms (more than 90%) for these sequence when compared with classical inbred strains of laboratory mice. The difference between Mus musculus castaneus and C57BL/6J reaches 98% and F1s male and female are fertile. These two properties pave the way for gene mapping derivating segregating generations between these strains. The phenotypical characteristics of Mus musculus castaneus have not been investigated, unfortunately. The first screening of Mus musculus castaneus and C57BL/6By was carried out for sensorial and motor development, spontaneous behavior in new environment, paw preference, maternal behavior, aggression in two different situations and time to learn escape in a water maze. Morphometry of hippocampus and weight of the male reproductive organs for measures that have been reported to be correlated with several of the examined behavior are also reported. The authors tested also reactivity to one drug (beta-CCM) revealing seizure proneness. The two strains differ for 69% of the reported measures. Comparison to other strains for the same measures obtained in the laboratory for identical tests with mice reared in identical situations provided the mean to compare Mus musculus castaneus with a large set of more or less traditional mice. This strain has the most extreme position for 80% of the comparisons.  相似文献

The generation process of a double‐walled carbon nanotube (DWNT) from a “peapod” was studied by classical molecular dynamics simulation. Starting from a peapod structure, defined by five C60 molecules inside a (10,10) single‐walled carbon nanotube (SWNT), polymerized fullerenes, a peanut‐like structure and an almost nanotube‐like structure were obtained under suitable conditions of temperature control. The mean distance between the two layers of the DWNT agreed with an experimental report that it is larger than the interlayer spacing found in multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). In addition, the chirality dependence of the potential energy of a DWNT on the relative chirality of its constituent tubes was examined using a 6‐12 Lennard‐Jones potential. It was found that the potential energy depends only on the distance between the two layers, not on the relative chiralities. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract— This paper presents a new display device, which combines a digital backplane and a vertically aligned nematic liquid‐crystal layer. The device has 1280 × 720 pixels in a 0.7‐in.‐diagonal display area. We examined the expression of Zic1, Zic2, and Zic3 genes in the mouse embryo by means of in situ hybridization. Zic genes were found as a group of genes coding for zinc finger proteins that are expressed in a restricted manner in the adult mouse cerebellum. We showed that the genes are the vertebrate homologues of Drosophila odd-paired, which may play an essential role in parasegmental subdivision and in visceral mesoderm development. The expression of the three Zic genes was first detected at gastrulation in a spatially restricted manner. At neurulation, the expression became restricted to the dorsal neural ectoderm and dorsal paraxial mesoderm. During organogenesis, the three genes were expressed in specific regions of several developing organs, including dorsal areas of the brain, spinal cord, paraxial mesenchyme, and epidermis, the marginal zone of the neural retina and distal regions of the developing limb. For all stages, significant differences in the spatial expression of Zic1, Zic2, and Zic3 were observed. Furthermore, the expression of Zic genes in Pax3, Wnt-1, and Wnt-3a mutant embryos suggested that Zic genes are not primarily regulated by the three genes which were expressed in dorsal areas similar to Zic genes. However, in open brain, a mutant with severe neural tube defects, and in the Wnt-3a mutant mice, the expression of Zic genes was changed. The changed expression pattern in Wnt-3a mutant mice suggests that Zic genes in the neural tube are regulated by the factors from notochord. Our findings suggest that Zic genes are involved in many developmental processes. Furthermore, analysis of gene expression patterns in different mouse mutants indicated that Zic genes may act upstream of many known developmental regulatory genes.  相似文献
