It is commonly accepted that the addition of spherical nanoparticles (NPs) cannot simultaneously improve the elastic modulus, the yield stress, and the ductility of an amorphous glassy polymer matrix. In contrast to this conventional wisdom, we show that ductility can be substantially increased, while maintaining gains in the elastic modulus and yield stress, in glassy nanocomposite films composed of spherical silica NPs grafted with polystyrene (PS) chains in a PS matrix. The key to these improvements are (i) uniform NP spatial dispersion and (ii) strong interfacial binding between NPs and the matrix, by making the grafted chains sufficiently long relative to the matrix. Strikingly, the optimal conditions for the mechanical reinforcement of the same nanocomposite material in the melt state is completely different, requiring the presence of spatially extended NP clusters. Evidently, NP spatial dispersions that optimize material properties are crucially sensitive to the state (melt versus glass) of the polymeric material. 相似文献

Monitoring the location, distribution and long-term engraftment of administered cells is critical for demonstrating the success of a cell therapy. Among available imaging-based cell tracking tools, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is advantageous due to its noninvasiveness, deep penetration, and high spatial resolution. While tracking cells in preclinical models via internalized MRI contrast agents (iron oxide nanoparticles, IO-NPs) is a widely used method, IO-NPs suffer from low iron content per particle, low uptake in nonphagocytotic cell types (e.g., mesenchymal stem cells, MSCs), weak negative contrast, and decreased MRI signal due to cell proliferation and cellular exocytosis. Herein, we demonstrate that internalization of IO-NP (10 nm) loaded biodegradable poly(lactide-co-glycolide) microparticles (IO/PLGA-MPs, 0.4-3 μm) in MSCs enhances MR parameters such as the r(2) relaxivity (5-fold), residence time inside the cells (3-fold) and R(2) signal (2-fold) compared to IO-NPs alone. Intriguingly, in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrate that internalization of IO/PLGA-MPs in MSCs does not compromise inherent cell properties such as viability, proliferation, migration and their ability to home to sites of inflammation. 相似文献

We have investigated the initial stages of growth and the electronic structure of C(60) molecules on graphene grown epitaxially on SiC(0001) at the single-molecule level using cryogenic ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. We observe that the first layer of C(60) molecules self-assembles into a well-ordered, close-packed arrangement on graphene upon molecular deposition at room temperature while exhibiting a subtle C(60) superlattice. We measure a highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap of ~3.5 eV for the C(60) molecules on graphene in submonolayer regime, indicating a significantly smaller amount of charge transfer from the graphene to C(60) and substrate-induced screening as compared to C(60) adsorbed on metallic substrates. Our results have important implications for the use of graphene for future device applications that require electronic decoupling between functional molecular adsorbates and substrates. 相似文献

Semiconductor photocatalysts capable of broadband solar photon absorption may be nonetheless precluded from use in driving water splitting and other solar-to-fuel related reactions due to unfavorable band edge energy alignment. Using first-principles density functional theory and beyond, we calculate the electronic structure of passivated CdSe surfaces and explore the opportunity to tune band edge energies of this and related semiconductors via electrostatic dipoles associated with chemisorbed ligands. We predict substantial shifts in band edge energies originating from both the induced dipole at the ligand/CdSe interface and the intrinsic dipole of the ligand. Building on important induced dipole contributions, we further show that, by changing the size and orientation of the ligand's intrinsic dipole moment via functionalization, we can control the direction and magnitude of the shifts of CdSe electronic levels. Our calculations suggest a general strategy for enabling new active semiconductor photocatalysts with both optimal opto-electronic, and photo- and electrochemical properties. 相似文献

Ground source heat pump systems often use vertical boreholes to exchange heat with the ground. Two areas of active research are the development of models to predict the thermal performance of vertical boreholes and improved procedures for analysis of in situ thermal conductivity tests, commonly known as thermal response tests (TRT). Both the models and analysis procedures ultimately need to be validated by comparing them to actual borehole data sets. This paper describes reference data sets for researchers to test their borehole models. The data sets are from a large laboratory “sandbox” containing a borehole with a U-tube. The tests are made under more controlled conditions than can be obtained in field tests. Thermal response tests on the borehole include temperature measurements on the borehole wall and within the surrounding soil, which are not usually available in field tests. The test data provide independent values of soil thermal conductivity and borehole thermal resistance for verifying borehole models and TRT analysis procedures. An illusion of explanatory depth (IOED) occurs when people believe they understand a concept more deeply than they actually do. To date, IOEDs have been identified only in mechanical and natural domains, occluding why they occur and suggesting that their implications are quite limited. Six studies illustrated that IOEDs occur because people adopt an inappropriately abstract construal style when they assess how well they understand concrete concepts. As this mechanism predicts, participants who naturally adopted concrete construal styles (Study 1) or were induced to adopt a concrete construal style (Studies 2–4 and 6), experienced diminished IOEDs. Two additional studies documented a novel IOED in the social psychological domain of electoral voting (Studies 5 and 6), demonstrating the generality of the construal mechanism, the authors also extended the presumed boundary conditions of the effect beyond mechanical and natural domains. These findings suggest a novel factor that might contribute to such diverse social-cognitive shortcomings as stereotyping, egocentrism, and the planning fallacy, where people adopt abstract representations of concepts that should be represented concretely. Vegetation was added to a fully developed sandy point bar in the meander of a constructed stream. Significant changes in the flow structure and bed topography were observed. As expected, the addition of vegetative resistance decreased the depth-averaged streamwise velocity over the bar and increased it in the open region. In addition, the secondary circulation increased in strength but became confined to the deepest section of the channel. Over the point bar, the secondary flow was entirely outward, i.e., toward the outer bank. The changes in flow led to changes in bar shape. Although the region of the bar closest to the inner bank accumulated sediment, erosion of the bar and the removal of plants by scouring were observed at the interface between the planted bar and the open channel. 相似文献

In driving studies based on simulators and instrumented vehicles, specific models are needed to capture key aspects of driving data such as lateral control. We propose a model that uses weighted polynomial projections to predict each data point from the previous three time points, and accommodates the attempts of the drivers to re-center the vehicle before crossing the borders of the traffic lane. Our model also allows the possibility that average position within the lane may vary from driver to driver. We demonstrate how to fit the model using standard statistical procedures available in software packages such as SAS. We used a fixed-base driving simulator to obtain data from 67 drivers with Alzheimer's disease and 128 elderly drivers without dementia. Using these data, we estimated the subject-specific parameters of our model, and we compared the two groups with respect to these parameters. We found that the parameters based on our model were able to distinguish between the groups in an interpretable manner. Hence, this model may be a useful tool to define outcome measures for observational and interventional driving studies. 相似文献
