Une architecture massivement parallèle intégrée

This paper presents a new massively parallel MIMD architecture, halfway between the Connection Machine and hypercubes based on 32-bit processors. It is built from specific 8-bit processors arranged in a 2-D grid and communicating by message transfers. We discuss the communication problems, the instruction set of the basic processing unit, the programmation of the whole array and the use of a high level data-flow language.     

Continuous and discontinuous fatigue crack growth of irradiated ultrahigh molecular mass polyethylene in saline solution at 37°C

To provide data for prosthesis design, the fatigue crack growth resistance of irradiated ultrahigh molecular mass polyethylene (UHMMPE) in saline solution at 37°C was determined from tests performed on compact tension specimens, comparable in size to the components in knee prostheses. The specimens were cyclically loaded by using a sinusoidal wave form at 1 Hz with a minimum-to-maximum load ratio of 0.1. Scanning electron microscopic fractography was used to examine the fracture surfaces. At higher stress levels, the Paris's Law was used to analyse the data, and a striation pattern with each striation corresponding to multi-cycles was observed. At lower stress levels, discontinuous fatigue crack growth was found, a phenomenon which dominated the fatigue life of the material and had not been reported previously in this material. A craze zone ahead of the crack tip was observed, which formed the discontinuous crack growth band with a length relevant to the Dugdale plastic zone length.     

Design and architecture of a new space priority mechanism for ATM network nodes

This paper presents the architecture of a new space priority mechanism intended to control cell loss in ATM switches. Our mechanism is a new generic concept called: the multiple pushout. It is based on the utilization of both AAL and ATM features and on a particular definition of the priority bit. Whenever one cell of a message overflows the buffer of an ATM switch, the algorithm causes the switch to discard other cells of the message (including later arrivals). Such discarding frees buffer spaces for cells of other messages that have a chance of arriving at their destination intact. Our objective is to emphasize that in case of overload, with most of proposed mechanisms, cells are discarded without any semantic information about the type of cells. Therefore, at the destination, all the fragments of the corrupted messages will be discarded anyway. Finally, we present simulation results comparing cell loss rates and message loss rates of several space priority mechanisms.     

100 mK bolometers for the submillimetre common-user bolometer array (scuba) I. Design and construction

We describe the design and construction of bolometric detectors for SCUBA - the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array for the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope in Hawaii. The instrument contains 131 individual detectors, in two arrays, optimized for the submillimetre atmospheric transmission windows. The detectors are cooled by dilution refrigeration to a temperature of 100 mK, so that the receiver performance will be limited by photon noise from the sky and telescope background in all wavebands. A future paper will describe the performance of the detectors with reference to typical data obtained during the laboratory commissioning period.

An advanced integral-type pressurized water reactor (IPWR) with a maximum thermal power of 65 MW has been developed at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). This 65 MW IPWR enhances the safety and reliability by adopting inherent safety design characteristics and an advanced passive design feature.
