Soils are a major reservoir of persistent organic pollutants, and soil-air partitioning and exchange are key processes controlling the atmospheric concentrations and regional fate of pollutants. Here, we report and discuss the concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in soils, their measured fugacities in soil, the soil-air partition coefficients (K(SA)) and soil-air fugacity gradients in rural background areas of N-NE Spain and N-NW England. Four sampling campaigns were carried out to assess seasonal and daily variability and differences between sampling sites. K(SA) values were significantly dependent on soil temperature and soil organic matter quantity, and to a minor extent organic matter type. All the PCB congeners in the soil are close to equilibrium with the atmosphere at rural Ebro sites, but soil fugacities tend to be higher than ambient air fugacities in early and late summer, consistent with the influence of temperature on soil-air partitioning. Therefore, during warm periods, soils increment their strength as secondary sources to the atmosphere. The mixture of PCBs found in the atmosphere is clearly strongly influenced by the mixture of PCBs which escape from soil, with significant correlations between them (R(2) ranging between 0.35 and 0.74 and p-level <0.001 for the Ebro sampling sites). Conversely, the close-to-equilibrium to net sink status of rural UK sites, suggest a close coupling of air and soil concentrations, but it is not possible to elucidate the importance of these soils as secondary sources yet, and presumably there are still significant primary sources to the regional/global environment.  相似文献

Large wood (re)introduction can deliver multiple benefits in river restoration, but there is a dearth of the detailed and longer‐term post‐project monitoring and evaluation required for improving best practice. We present findings from an academic partnership approach to post‐project evaluation, based on successive MSc research projects on restored large wood in the Loddon catchment, UK. Field and modelling data reveal: (i) key differences in large wood features between restored and natural reaches; (ii) increased hydraulic retention and changes to mesohabitats associated with large wood; (iii) differences in macroinvertebrate community composition around large wood but a lack of site‐level effects; (iv) interactions between macrophytes and large wood that may be specific to restored reaches; (v) a need for further field and modelling studies to inform the accurate representation of large wood in hydraulic models. Some key challenges in partnership working are identified to aid planning and effectiveness of future collaborations.  相似文献

The OPERA RPC HV system has been implemented using custom current measurement/distribution systems developed by the LNF Electronics Workshop.

Each system features eight inputs and 24 outputs (1–3 modularity). The current on each channel is measured with 100 pA sensitivity and 3% accuracy in the 1 nA– range.

Drug molecules must cross multiple cell membrane barriers to reach their site of action. We present evidence that one of the largest classes of pharmaceutical drug molecules, the cationic amphiphilic drugs (CADs), does so via a catalytic reaction that degrades the phospholipid fabric of the membrane. We find that CADs partition rapidly to the polar-apolar region of the membrane. At physiological pH, the protonated groups on the CAD catalyse the acid hydrolysis of the ester linkage present in the phospholipid chains, producing a fatty acid and a single-chain lipid. The single-chain lipids rapidly destabilize the membrane, causing membranous fragments to separate and diffuse away from the host. These membrane fragments carry the drug molecules with them. The entire process, from drug adsorption to drug release within micelles, occurs on a time-scale of seconds, compatible with in vivo drug diffusion rates. Given the rate at which the reaction occurs, it is probable that this process is a significant mechanism for drug transport.  相似文献

Important aspects in engineering gold nanoparticles for theranostic applications include the control of size, optical properties, cytotoxicity, biodistribution, and clearance. In this study, gold nanotubes with controlled length and tunable absorption in the near‐infrared (NIR) region have been exploited for applications as photothermal conversion agents and in vivo photoacoustic imaging contrast agents. A length‐controlled synthesis has been developed to fabricate gold nanotubes (NTs) with well‐defined shape (i.e., inner void and open ends), high crystallinity, and tunable NIR surface plasmon resonance. A coating of poly(sodium 4‐styrenesulfonate) (PSS) endows the nanotubes with colloidal stability and low cytotoxicity. The PSS‐coated Au NTs have the following characteristics: i) cellular uptake by colorectal cancer cells and macrophage cells, ii) photothermal ablation of cancer cells using single wavelength pulse laser irradiation, iii) excellent in vivo photoacoustic signal generation capability and accumulation at the tumor site, iv) hepatobiliary clearance within 72 h postintravenous injection. These results demonstrate that these PSS‐coated Au NTs have the ideal attributes to develop their potential as effective and safe in vivo imaging nanoprobes, photothermal conversion agents, and drug delivery vehicles. To the best of knowledge, this is the first in vitro and in vivo study of gold nanotubes.  相似文献

We conducted an early phase II trial in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) to evaluate response efficacy of a combination of Cisplatin (CDDP) and Carboplatin (CBDCA). The twenty-six patients in the study had had no previous treatment. They received a sequential administration of 300 mg/m2 CBDCA and 80 mg/m2 CDDP with approximately 3,500 ml of hydration on day 1 every 4 weeks. All patients were evaluable for response and toxicity. Ten (38.5%) of all assessable patients achieved a partial response (95% confidence interval, 19.8-57.2%). Response rates for patients with stage III A, III B and IV- disease were 40.0 (2/5), 70.0 (7/10) and 9.1% (1/11), respectively. Response rates for patients with squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma were 35.7 (5/14), 45.5 (5/11) and 0.0% (0/1), respectively. The median survival time (MST) of all patients was 11 months. The MST for patients with stage III disease was 14 months; for those with stage IV disease it was 7 months. The MST for responding patients was 15 months and for not responding patients 5 months. Major toxicities were hematologic and gastrointestinal, and the dose-limiting factor was thrombocytopenia. This combination chemotherapy was effective against NSCLC with tolerable toxicities. Further trials are warranted to determine the efficacy of the combination chemotherapy.  相似文献

Methamphetamine is, worldwide, one of the most consumed drugs of abuse. One important side effect is neurodegeneration leading to a decrease in life expectancy. The aim of this paper was to check whether the drug affects one of the receptors involved in neurodegeneration/neuroprotection events, namely the adenosine A2A receptor (A2AR). First, we noticed that methamphetamine does not affect A2A functionality if the receptor is expressed in a heterologous system. However, A2AR becomes sensitive to the drug upon complexes formation with the cannabinoid CB1 receptor (CB1R) and the sigma 1 receptor (σ1R). Signaling via both adenosine A2AR and cannabinoid CB1R was affected by methamphetamine in cells co-expressing the two receptors. In striatal primary cultures, the A2AR–CB1R heteromer complex was detected and methamphetamine not only altered its expression but completely blocked the A2AR- and the CB1R-mediated activation of the mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. In conclusion, methamphetamine, with the participation of σ1R, alters the expression and function of two interacting receptors, A2AR, which is a therapeutic target for neuroprotection, and CB1R, which is the most abundant G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) in the brain.  相似文献
