Posthyperventilation apnea associated with severe hypoxemia

We studied a 14-year-old girl who suffered fractures of her mandible and tegmen following a fall from a balance beam. Thirteen days after hospitalization, she developed severe, protracted, recurrent episodes of hyperventilation; subsequently, she suffered posthyperventilation apnea, which at times was prolonged and association with severe hypoxemia with an arterial oxygen pressure as low as 25 mm Hg. The patient was treated with added dead space and chlorpromazine hydrochloride (Thorazine). Postulated mechanisms for her disorder are discussed. The importance of close clinical and laboratory observation in similar cases is stressed.     

Descent via isogeny on elliptic curves with large rational torsion subgroups

We outline PARI programs which assist with various algorithms related to descent via isogeny on elliptic curves. We describe, in this context, variations of standard inequalities which aid the computation of members of the Tate–Shafarevich group. We apply these techniques to several examples: in one case we use descent via 9-isogeny to determine the rank of an elliptic curve; in another case we find nontrivial members of the 9-part of the Tate–Shafarevich group, and in a further case, nontrivial members of the 13-part of the Tate–Shafarevich group.     

The hidden history of IQ and special education: Can the problems be solved?

Over the last 50 years, IQ gains and renorming tests have radically altered the percentage of Americans with IQs below 70. Moreover, the criterion for mental retardation was altered from 70, normed against Whites only, to 70, normed against all Americans. In fact, the proportion eligible to be classified as mentally retarded has varied from a high of 1 in 23 to a low of 1 in 213. These enormous fluctuations in the past engendered no response from practicing psychologists and no adequate response from test publishers. It must be concluded that no IQ criterion of mental retardation can be justified in terms of its correlation with impaired adaptive behavior. Because this correlation is the sole rationale of an IQ criterion, consideration should be given to the notion of abandoning IQ tests in favor of direct tests of impaired adaptive behavior. The fact that people will get quite different scores on different IQ tests can be manipulated by psychologists to suit their clients' needs. Psychological aspects of disasters

This article describes several topics necessary for understanding the psychological impact of disasters. Topics discussed include characteristics of disaster that impact psychological response, stages of response, factors influencing individual and collective trauma, and important aspects of psychological interventions. The author shares several conclusions about the nature of people, culture, and society based on his many years of work in disaster mental health.     

Survey of non-APA-accredited internships and their interns.

We obtained information about the characteristics of internship programs not accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) and of their interns. Surveys were completed by directors of 74% of the programs and 51% of the interns in these programs. The most prominent reason why these programs did not seek accreditation was financial, though several of these programs had been in existence for several years, and 65% of them indicated that they would eventually seek accreditation. More than half of the interns in these programs were from APA-accredited graduate programs; their choice of internship was closely related to the location of the site. Interns did rate APA accreditation as important in ideal site selection, although four factors were rated even more important. Over 350 interns train in nonaccredited programs, which suggests their importance in the development of professional psychologists. Efforts being made by the Association of Psychology Internship Centers (APIC) to apply minimum criteria to these programs seem well warranted. High-fidelity lightwave transmission of multiple AM-VSB NTSCsignals

The progress towards developing AM lightwave links for the transmission of multiple TV signals is reported. While the signal-quality objectives and transmission distances are appropriate for CATV trunking, the technology is expected to have applicability to the distribution of video signals in the subscriber loop. Highly linear 1.3-μm distributed feedback (DFB) lasers designed expressly for analog requirements are used to transmit 42 continuous wave carriers according to the standard US CATV frequency plan. For the best lasers, when evaluated over 12 km of fiber, carrier to noise was >52 dB, composite second-order distortion was >70 dBc, and composite triple beat was >70 dBc. The relationship between measurements with continuous wave carriers and actual video signals is discussed. System design rules are offered. Properties that lead to superior analog performance are discussed. Data from 700 links indicate that composite third-order distortion generally scales with product count but that composite second-order distortion has a significant frequency-dependent component     

Object-oriented domain specific compilers for programming FPGAs

Simplifying the programming models is paramount to the success of reconfigurable computing with field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). This paper presents a methodology to combine true object-oriented design of the compiler/CAD tool with an object-oriented hardware design methodology in C++. The resulting system provides all the benefits of object-oriented design to the compiler/CAD tool designer and to the hardware designer/programmer. The two examples for domain-specific compilers presented are BSAT and StReAm. Each domain-specific compiler is targeted at a very specific application domain, such as applications that accelerate Boolean satisfiability problems with BSAT, and applications which lend themselves for implementation as a stream architecture with StReAm. The key benefit of the presented domain specific compilers is a reduction of design time by orders of magnitude while keeping the optimal performance of hand-designed circuits     

Endogenous synthesis of arginine plays an important role in maintaining arginine homeostasis in postweaning growing pigs

This study was conducted to determine whether endogenous synthesis of arginine plays a role in regulating arginine homeostasis in postweaning pigs. Pigs were fed a sorghum-based diet containing 0. 98% arginine and were used for studies at 75 d of age (28.4 kg body weight). Mitochondria were prepared from the jejunum and other major tissues for measuring the activities of Delta1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate (P5C) synthase and proline oxidase (enzymes catalyzing P5C synthesis from glutamate and proline, respectively) and of ornithine aminotransferase (OAT) (the enzyme catalyzing the interconversion of P5C into ornithine). For metabolic studies, jejunal enterocytes were incubated at 37 degrees C for 30 min in Krebs-Henseleit bicarbonate buffer containing 2 mmol/L L-glutamine, 2 mmol/L L-[U-14C]proline, and 0-200 micromol/L gabaculine (an inhibitor of OAT). The activities of P5C synthase, proline oxidase and OAT were greatest in enterocytes among all of the tissues studied. Incubation of enterocytes with gabaculine resulted in decreases (P < 0.05) in the synthesis of ornithine and citrulline from glutamine and proline. When gabaculine was orally administered to pigs (0.83 mg/kg body weight) to inhibit intestinal synthesis of citrulline from glutamine and proline, plasma concentrations of citrulline (-26%) and arginine (-22%) decreased (P < 0.05), whereas those of alanine (+21%), ornithine (+17%), proline (+107%), taurine (+56%) and branched-chain amino acids (+21-40%) increased (P < 0.05). On the basis of dietary arginine intake and estimated arginine utilization, the endogenous synthesis of arginine in the 28-kg pig provided >/=50.2% of total daily arginine requirement. Taken together, our results suggest an important role for endogenous synthesis of arginine in regulating arginine homeostasis in postweaning growing pigs, as previously shown in neonatal pigs.     

Solution of semiconductor equations using a fully adaptive mesh strategy

The letter presents a novel means of mesh adaption when the finite-element method is applied to the semiconductor equations. Using triangular elements it has the ability to avoid obtuse angles while still allowing flexibility in mesh design. The usefulness of the method is demonstrated by a simulation of an MOS device operating at a high drain voltage where generation due to impact ionisation becomes significant.
