The application of the Nusselt number (Nu) correlation of a packed bed of spherical particles overestimates the rate of heat transfer in the packed beds of shredded materials. This is due to the dependence of flow distribution on the particle geometry. This discrepancy is even more pronounced due to a channeling effect at low Peclet numbers (Pe). In this study, the heat transfer coefficient for a packed bed of shredded materials was derived at low Peclet numbers. In deriving the correlation, both numerical simulation and experimental work were employed. The experimental work was carried out in a packed bed of combustible materials for the flow rates of 15 × 10? 6 to 50 × 10? 6 m 3/s and a temperature range of 30 to 60°C. Using the results of experimental work along with numerical modeling and applying a power law formulation, the best-fit Nusselt number for the packed bed of shredded materials for Pe < 25 was derived to be Nu = 0.015 0.11 + Pe 0.73 . The Nusselt number calculated from this correlation is in good agreement with the experimental data. 相似文献

The simultaneous radiation grafting of styrene onto poly(tetrafluoroethylene‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) (FEP) films was studied at room temperature. The effects of grafting conditions (type of solvent, irradiation dose, dose rate, and monomer concentration) were investigated. The degree of grafting was found to be dependent on the investigated grafting conditions. The dependence of the initial rate of grafting on the dose rate and the monomer concentration was found to be of 0.5 and 1.3 orders, respectively. The results suggest that grafting proceeds by the so‐called front mechanism in which the grafting front starts at the surface of the film and moves internally toward the middle of the film by successive diffusion of styrene through the grafted layers. Some selected properties of the grafted films were evaluated in correlation with the degree of grafting. We found that the grafted FEP films possess good mechanical stability, which encourages their use for the preparation of proton exchange membranes. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Phosphatidylinositol (PtdIns) 3-kinase is an enzyme implicated in growth factor signal transduction by associating with receptor and nonreceptor tyrosine kinases, including the platelet-derived growth factor receptor. Inhibitors of PtdIns 3-kinase could potentially give a better understanding of the function and regulatory mechanisms of the enzyme. Quercetin, a naturally occurring bioflavinoid, was previously shown to inhibit PtdIns 3-kinase with an IC50 of 1.3 microgram/ml (3.8 microM); inhibition appeared to be directed at the ATP-binding site of the kinase. Analogs of quercetin were investigated as PtdIns 3-kinase inhibitors, with the most potent ones exhibiting IC50 values in the range of 1.7-8.4 micrograms/ml. In contrast, genistein, a potent tyrosine kinase inhibitor of the isoflavone class, did not inhibit PtdIns 3-kinase significantly (IC50 > 30 micrograms/ml). Since quercetin has also been shown to inhibit other PtdIns and protein kinases, other chromones were evaluated as inhibitors of PtdIns 3-kinase without affecting PtdIns 4-kinase or selected protein kinases. One such compound, 2-(4-morpholinyl)-8-phenyl-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one (also known as 2-(4-morpholinyl)-8-phenylchromone, LY294002), completely and specifically abolished PtdIns 3-kinase activity (IC50 = 0.43 microgram/ml; 1.40 microM) but did not inhibit PtdIns 4-kinase or tested protein and lipid kinases. Analogs of LY294002 demonstrated a very selective structure-activity relationship, with slight changes in structure causing marked decreases in inhibition. LY294002 was shown to completely abolish PtdIns 3-kinase activity in fMet-Leu-Phe-stimulated human neutrophils, as well as inhibit proliferation of smooth muscle cells in cultured rabbit aortic segments. Since PtdIns 3-kinase appears to be centrally involved with growth factor signal transduction, the development of specific inhibitors against the kinase may be beneficial in the treatment of proliferative diseases as well as in elucidating the biological role of the kinase in cellular proliferation and growth factor response. 相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To monitor the documentation of blood pressure measurements and other cardiovascular risk factors in general practice patients with hypertension. METHOD: Twenty-five case notes of patients diagnosed as hypertensive were randomly selected from each of 58 participating general practitioners in suburban general practice in Adelaide, South Australia and were monitored by two registered nurses. Main outcome measures: to assess whether blood pressure readings, weight, smoking history, alcohol intake and family history were documented, and whether electrocardiogram, plasma lipids, urinalysis and biochemical screen (which includes blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, glucose, electrolytes and uric acid) had been undertaken. RESULTS: Data from 1446 hypertensive patients showed that for the last three blood pressure values recorded, 483 (33%) had an average level of 140/90 mm Hg or less and 1100 (76%) had an average of 160/95 mm Hg or less. The other cardiovascular risk factors selected were variably recorded, with biochemical screen being most commonly recorded [1198 (83%)] and family history [423 (29%)] the least. CONCLUSIONS: Inadequacies in the control of hypertension and in the documentation of other cardiovascular risk factors suggest that further educational initiatives are required in this common chronic illness. 相似文献

The presence of neuropsychological disturbances in HIV-positive, pre-symptomatic individuals is a controversial issue. Neuroimaging studies have not shown brain atrophy or hyperintensity in the white matter, whereas proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy has revealed some abnormality of cerebral biochemistry. Using an antibody to beta-amyloid precursor protein (beta-APP), we previously demonstrated frequent and widespread axonal changes in the brains of AIDS patients. In this study, we extended the use of beta-APP to asymptomatic patients in order to establish a possible morphological correlation with neuropsychological disorders. Brain samples from 29 patients were examined. Results showed bundles of beta-APP-positive axons in 8/29 cases (27%). The changes, seen in both superficial and deep white matter, were either focal or diffuse, could not be visualized by silver or ubiquitin stains, and did not coexist with any change in distribution or morphology of astrocytes and microglial cells. We conclude that in HIV-positive asymptomatic individuals, axonal changes: (a) may be related to the state of immune activation with consequent presence of toxic substances, including cytokines, observed in these patients; (b) may represent mild changes that could undergo repair, unless other pathological events, such as the supervening of the AIDS stage and the specific encephalitis, make them permanent. 相似文献
