Stationary pulse propagation in n-core nonlinear fiber arrays

We investigate, analytically and numerically, stationary pulse propagation in n-core nonlinear fiber arrays of circular symmetry. It is shown that many types of stationary pulse-like solitary waves exist in these arrays. Transitions between the states of different symmetries occur in the form of bifurcations. The exact formula which specifies the points where asymmetric solutions bifurcate from the solution, which has identical pulses in each core, is obtained for the general n-core case. Energy-spatial frequency bifurcation diagrams are constructed for the lowest order soliton solutions for the n=3, 4, and 5 cases. The envelopes of these solutions and distributions of their field amplitude maxima among the cores are also presented     

Subarachnoid haemorrhage induced proliferation of leptomeningeal cells and deposition of extracellular matrices in the arachnoid granulations and subarachnoid space. Immunhistochemical study

Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) often leads to subarachnoid fibrosis and resultant normal pressure hydrocephalus; however, how subarachnoid fibrosis occurs is unknown. We examined the changes within arachnoid granulations (AGs) and the subarachnoid space (SAS) chronologically at the parasagittal region obtained from patients with SAH at autopsy and made comparison with controls by immunostaining for cytokeratin, specific marker for leptomeningeal cells and by the elastica Masson-Goldner methods. Within a week some AGs were torn, and many inflammatory cells filled the AGs and SAS. Cytokeratin positive cells were scarce. During the next two weeks cytokeratin positive cells increased. After three weeks, AGs and SAS were filled by dense deposits of extracellular matrices surrounded by multiple layers of leptomeningeal cells.     

Palliative treatments of cancers of upper respiratory and digestive tracts

Palliative treatment of head and neck cancers needs an initial evaluation based upon clinical symptoms and tumoral behaviour. Local recurrences are the most frequent presentation of tumoral failures. The therapeutic management of these local recurrences requires a mixture of unspecific and specific oncologic procedures. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are frequently used in those circumstances in order to reduce the tumoral volume and to facilitate the effectiveness of unspecific treatments. Management of metastatic disease is often impaired by the moderate efficiency of chemotherapy while this treatment leads to marked side effects. Basically, the best therapeutic choice depends on the expected positive balance between the improvement of symptoms and the level of treatment-related side effects. However, daily clinical approach is a better way to care these patients than predefined rigid protocols.     

X gene and precore region mutations in the hepatitis B virus genome in persons positive for antibody to hepatitis B e antigen: comparison between asymptomatic "healthy" carriers and patients with severe chronic active hepatitis

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) carriers with antibody to hepatitis e antigen comprise asymptomatic carriers (ASCs), who have low replication levels of HBV, and patients with chronic active hepatitis (CAH), who have high levels of viral replication. To investigate whether defects in the X protein might be responsible for this difference in the level of viral replication, nucleotide sequences of X and precore gene regions in serum HBV were analyzed in 19 ASCs and 9 CAH patients. All patients had a point mutation creating a stop codon in the precore region. Seventeen ASCs (87.3%) had identical mutations consisting of 4 noncontiguous 1-bp deletions or an 8-bp deletion, both of which truncate the normal X protein, whereas no CAH patient had an X gene mutation (P < .001). Thus, deletion of the X protein might be responsible for the low levels of viral replication in ASCs.     

Experimental and theoretical studies on a distributed temperaturesensor based on Brillouin scattering

Results are reported from recent research on the use of the Brillouin gain/loss mechanism for distributed sensing. A theoretical model of the interaction of the pulsed and CW beams is described and compared with experiments. Results from a system with a 51 km sensing length are presented. We finally investigate issues related to the variation within the sensing fiber of the polarizations of the two beams     

Visceral leishmaniasis: II. Histiocyte ultrastructure in bone marrow associated with low level of parasitaemia and mimicking malignant histiocytosis

The ultrastructural features of histiocytes in the bone marrow (BM) were studied in a febrile, splenomegalic and pancytopenic Sudanese patient who was diagnosed by one of us as visceral leishmaniasis (VL) associated with low level of parasitaemia and mimicking malignant histiocytosis (MH). Serial thick (STS) and ultrathin (SUT) sections showed that the BM was hypercellular and markedly infiltrated by large histiocytes with prominent phagocytosis. A thorough examination of various ST and UT section revealed only a single, typical Leishman-Donovan body. At transmission electron microscopy (TEM) level, two principal types of histiocytic cells were identified: Type I, subdivided into two subtypes, were actively phagocytic histiocytes (PH) with large digestive vacuoles and primary lysosomes; type II were nonphagocytic histiocytes (nPH) with primary lysosomes only. The rate of PH to nPH ws 7:2 in plastic STS. The interaction between the PH and ingested cells is described. Both types of cell were morphologically similar to previously described malignant histiocytic cells. However, this study showed a better characterization of PH during VL.     

Stabilization of water suspensions of metal powders

Sedimentation stability of water suspensions of dispersed metal powders with water-soluble high-molecular compounds (HMC) added is investigated by a method of analyzing the kinetics of their sedimentation. When stabilizing by polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) the concentration regions of sedimentation stability for the suspensions are determined. The stabilization is explained according to the model of formation of coagulation HMC layers on metal particles. The dependence of the coagulation layer thickness on the concentration of PVA in the solution is estimated.Republican Engineering-and-Technical Center of Powder Metallurgy, Perm'. Cigarette smoking, serum lipids, folate, and vitamin B12 in lung cancer

The purpose of our study was to evaluate the effects of cigarette smoking and serum lipids, folate, and vitamin B12 on the development of lung cancer in the Turkish population. The study group consisted of patients with histologically proven lung cancer and the control group comprised healthy smokers being followed in our smoking cessation outpatient department. Smoking history was obtained from all subjects and serum total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, vitamin B12, and folate levels were measured. Pack/years of cigarettes smoked were significantly higher in the subjects with lung cancer than in the control group (p < 0.01). Serum total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglyceride, serum folate, and vitamin B12 levels were within normal limits in both groups (p < 0.05), but serum vitamin B12 levels were statistically significantly higher (p < 0.01) in the cancer group than in the controls. In our study, we did not observe low levels of serum cholesterol, vitamin B12, or folate in the lung cancer patients.
