This article accesses the impact performance of ceramic-faced, metal–ceramic interpenetrating composites (IPCs) produced in situ from infiltrating ceramic foams with a molten aluminium–magnesium alloy. The approach had two variations, viz., the production of a metal bond between a ceramic front face and backing IPC and the creation of a ceramic bond. The impact performance of metal-bonded IPCs was evaluated using both split Hopkinson’s pressure bar (SHPB) and depth of penetration (DoP) techniques. With a 4-mm thick Al2O3 front face and an 8-mm thick IPC backing, the DoP was zero. In one case, a sample survived fundamentally intact with only spall damage to the dense Al2O3 front face. The resulting damage was thoroughly assessed using a range of techniques, including polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), 3D MicroCT and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The metal phase deformed as a result of the formation of large numbers of dislocations, whilst the ceramic phase accommodated the deformation via localised cracking. Metal bridges across the cracks formed, increasing the damage tolerance of the IPCs. The metal bond between the ceramic front face and the IPC was also observed to withstand the impact of the armour piercing rounds without any sign of debonding occurring.  相似文献

Experimental demonstration of wafer-scale growth of well-aligned, dense, single-walled carbon nanotubes on 4" ST-cut quartz wafers is presented. We developed a new carbon nanotube (CNT) wafer-scale growth process. This process allows quartz wafers to be heated to the CNT growth temperature of 865degC through the alpha-beta phase transformation temperature of quartz (573degC) without wafer fracture. We also demonstrate wafer-scale CNT transfer to transfer these aligned CNTs from quartz wafers to silicon wafers. The CNT transfer process preserves CNT density and alignment. Carbon nanotube FETs fabricated using these transferred CNTs exhibit high yield. Wafer-scale growth and wafer-scale transfer of aligned CNTs enable carbon nanotube very large-scale integration circuits and their large-scale integration with silicon CMOS.  相似文献

The solar renewable energy community depends on radiometric measurements and instrumentation for data to design and monitor solar energy systems, and develop and validate solar radiation models. This contribution evaluates the impact of instrument uncertainties contributing to data inaccuracies and their effect on short-term and long-term measurement series, and on radiation model validation studies. For the latter part, transposition (horizontal-to-tilt) models are used as an example. Confirming previous studies, it is found that a widely used pyranometer strongly underestimates diffuse and global radiation, particularly in winter, unless appropriate corrective measures are taken. Other types of measurement problems are also discussed, such as those involved in the indirect determination of direct or diffuse irradiance, and in shadowband correction methods. The sensitivity of the predictions from transposition models to inaccuracies in input radiation data is demonstrated. Caution is therefore issued to the whole community regarding drawing detailed conclusions about solar radiation data without due attention to the data quality issues only recently identified.  相似文献

Hourly mean or monthly mean values of measured solar radiation are typical vehicles for summarized solar radiation and meteorological data. Often, solar-based renewable energy system designers, researchers, and engineers prefer to work with more highly time resolved data, such as detailed diurnal profiles, or mean daily values. The object of this paper is to present a simple method for smoothly interpolating averaged (coarsely resolved) data into data with a finer resolution, while preserving the deterministic mean of the data. The technique preserves the proper component relationship between direct, diffuse, and global solar radiation (when values for at least two of the components are available), as well as the deterministic mean of the coarsely resolved data. Examples based on measured data from several sources and examples of the applicability of this mean preserving smooth interpolator to other averaged data, such as weather data, are presented.  相似文献

Drosophila’s white gene encodes an ATP-binding cassette G-subfamily (ABCG) half-transporter. White is closely related to mammalian ABCG family members that function in cholesterol efflux. Mutants of white have several behavioral phenotypes that are independent of visual defects. This study characterizes a novel defect of white mutants in the acquisition of olfactory memory using the aversive olfactory conditioning paradigm. The w1118 mutants learned slower than wildtype controls, yet with additional training, they reached wildtype levels of performance. The w1118 learning phenotype is also found in the wapricot and wcoral alleles, is dominant, and is rescued by genomic white and mini-white transgenes. Reducing dietary cholesterol strongly impaired olfactory learning for wildtype controls, while w1118 mutants were resistant to this deficit. The w1118 mutants displayed higher levels of cholesterol and cholesterol esters than wildtype under this low-cholesterol diet. Increasing levels of serotonin, dopamine, or both in the white mutants significantly improved w1118 learning. However, serotonin levels were not lower in the heads of the w1118 mutants than in wildtype controls. There were also no significant differences found in synapse numbers within the w1118 brain. We propose that the w1118 learning defect may be due to inefficient biogenic amine signaling brought about by altered cholesterol homeostasis.  相似文献

Vitamin D plays a crucial role in regulation of the immune response. However, treatment of autoimmune diseases with 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3] doses sufficient to be effective is prohibitive due to its calcemic and toxic effects. We use the collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) model to analyze the efficacy of the noncalcemic analog of vitamin D, 20S-hydroxyvitamin D3 [20S(OH)D3], as well as 1,25(OH)2D3, to attenuate arthritis and explore a potential mechanism of action. Mice fed a diet deficient in vitamin D developed a more severe arthritis characterized by enhanced secretion of T cell inflammatory cytokines, compared to mice fed a normal diet. The T cell inflammatory cytokines were effectively suppressed, however, by culture of the cells with 20S(OH)D3. Interestingly, one of the consequences of culture with 1,25(OH)2D3 or 20S(OH)D3, was upregulation of the natural inhibitory receptor leukocyte associated immunoglobulin-like receptor-1 (LAIR-1 or CD305). Polyclonal antibodies which activate LAIR-1 were also capable of attenuating arthritis. Moreover, oral therapy with active forms of vitamin D suppressed arthritis in LAIR-1 sufficient DR1 mice, but were ineffective in LAIR-1−/− deficient mice. Taken together, these data show that the effect of vitamin D on inflammation is at least, in part, mediated by LAIR-1 and that non-calcemic 20S(OH)D3 may be a promising therapeutic agent for the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis.  相似文献

Semiconductor microcavities offer unique means of controlling light-matter interactions in confined geometries, resulting in a wide range of applications in optical communications and inspiring proposals for quantum information processing and computational schemes. Studies of spin dynamics in microcavities, a new and promising research field, have revealed effects such as polarization beats, stimulated spin scattering and giant Faraday rotation. Here, we study the electron spin dynamics in optically pumped GaAs microdisc lasers with quantum wells and interface-fluctuation quantum dots in the active region. In particular, we examine how the electron spin dynamics are modified by the stimulated emission in the discs, and observe an enhancement of the spin-coherence time when the optical excitation is in resonance with a high-quality (Q approximately 5,000) lasing mode. This resonant enhancement, contrary to expectations from the observed trend in the carrier-recombination time, is then manipulated by altering the cavity design and dimensions. In analogy with devices based on excitonic coherence, this ability to engineer coherent interactions between electron spins and photons may provide new pathways towards spin-dependent quantum optoelectronics.  相似文献

The structural development of a calcium (sodium) aluminosilicate hydrate (C–(N‐)A–S–H) gel system, obtained through the reaction of sodium metasilicate and ground granulated blast furnace slag, is assessed by high‐resolution 29Si and 27Al MAS NMR spectroscopy during the first 2 yr after mixing. The cements formed primarily consist of C–(N‐)A–S–H gels, with hydrotalcite and disordered alkali aluminosilicate gels also identified in the solid product assemblages. Deconvolution of the 27Al MAS NMR spectra enables the identification of three distinct tetrahedral Al sites, consistent with the 29Si MAS NMR data, where Q3(1Al), Q4(3Al), and Q4(4Al) silicate sites are identified. These results suggest significant levels of cross‐linking in the C–(N‐)A–S–H gel and the presence of an additional highly polymerized aluminosilicate product. The mean chain length, extent of cross‐linking, and Al/Si ratio of the C–(N‐)A–S–H gel decrease slightly over time. The de‐cross‐linking effect is explained by the key role of Al in mixed cross‐linked/non‐cross‐linked C–(N‐)A–S–H gels, because the cross‐linked components have much lower Al‐binding capacities than the noncross‐linked components. These results show that the aluminosilicate chain lengths and chemical compositions of the fundamental structural components in C–(N‐)A–S–H gels vary in a way that is not immediately evident from the overall bulk chemistry.  相似文献
