Anaplastic large cell lymphoma of T-cell phenotype in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome

A variety of shortcomings are associated with most currently used gastrointestinal contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Artifacts resulting from peristalsis and other motions in the abdominal region are produced by many positive contrast agents (which increase signal intensity). Although this is not a problem for negative contrast agents (which decrease signal intensity), some negative contrast agents produce magnetic susceptibility artifacts that are especially pronounced at high field strength and with gradient echo pulse sequences. These susceptibility artifacts are produced by both paramagnetic and diamagnetic agents. It has been demonstrated in phantoms, however, that susceptibility matching can be used to produce contrast agents with desirable relaxation and contrast properties but without deleterious susceptibility artifacts. We now report results of animal tests of such an oral contrast agent, consisting of a suspension of superparamagnetic iron oxide particles and diamagnetic barium sulfate particles, compared to individual suspensions of the iron oxide and of the barium sulfate. Iron oxide was the least effective and the matched susceptibility mixture was the most effective for the intestine, which has traditionally been the most difficult region of the GI tract to visualize clearly. Matched susceptibility mixtures, which are inherently able to yield images free of susceptibility artifacts without compromising contrast, show promise of being improved oral negative contrast agents for use in gastrointestinal MRI.     

Tyrosine-dependent basolateral sorting signals are distinct from tyrosine-dependent internalization signals

Converting cysteine 543 to tyrosine in the influenza virus hemagglutinin (HA) introduces both a basolateral sorting signal and an internalization signal into the HA cytoplasmic domain. Another HA mutant, HA+8, contains eight additional amino acids at the end of the cytoplasmic domain that include a powerful internalization signal. HA+8 was also sorted efficiently to the basolateral surface of Madin-Darby canine kidney cells. The simplest explanation for the observation that multiple sorting phenotypes depend upon the same small amino acid sequence is that certain tyrosine-based internalization signals might also function as basolateral sorting signals. To test this hypothesis, second-site mutations were introduced into HA C543Y or HA+8 to determine if the internalization and basolateral sorting functions can be separated. For HA C543Y, the same sequence positions were important for both basolateral sorting and internalization, but the two functions responded differently to individual amino acid replacements, indicating that they were distinct. For HA+8, the basolateral sorting signal required the same tyrosine as the internalization signal, but did not share any other characteristics. Thus, even when basolateral sorting signals that depend on tyrosine overlap or are co-linear with internalizations signals, the two sorting processes are sensitive to different characteristics of the sequence.     

The sub-rating channel assignment strategy for PCS hand-offs

A new personal communications services (PCS) hand-off scheme is proposed. This scheme provides for hand-off to radio ports on which there is no free channel by “sub-rating” an existing connection. With sub-rating, an occupied full-rate channel is temporarily divided into two half-rate channels: one to serve the existing call and the other to serve the hand-off request. The blocking probabilities (combined forced terminations of existing calls and blocking of new call attempts) of this new scheme compare favorably with the standard scheme (nonprioritizing) and the previously proposed prioritizing schemes. The costs for this scheme are presented and discussed, as well as the additional procedural complexity of implementing on-the-fly sub-rating and the impact of continuing the conversation on a lower rate channel (which may lower speech quality of increase battery drain). Analytical models and simulations investigating the traffic impacts are presented, as are the results that show that even in the highest offered load considered a 3-min conversation in the busy hour experiences less than half a second of sub-rated conversation on average and only about 3% of the calls experience more than 5.12 s of sub-rated conversation. This scheme can increase capacity by 8-35% for systems with 1% call incompletion probability

Principles for radiation of time-harmonic elementary current in magnetized electron plasma half-space

The radiation emitted by a time-harmonic elementary current in magnetized electron plasma half-space, bounded by an ideal electric plane, is investigated using an exact formulation. It is found that: conventional image principle holds for vertical magnetization case; while for parallel magnetization case, coupled image principle seems to be valid.     

Pentacene-based organic thin-film transistors

Organic thin-film transistors using the fused-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pentacene as the active electronic material have shown mobility as large as 0.7 cm²/V-s and on/off current ratio larger than 10⁸; both values are comparable to hydrogenated amorphous silicon devices. On the other hand, these and most other organic TFT's have an undesirably large subthreshold slope. We show here that the large subthreshold slope typically observed is not an intrinsic property of the organic semiconducting material and that devices with subthreshold slope similar to amorphous silicon devices are possible     

An approach to the identifiable parameters of a manipulator

This article deals with the minimal parameters of a manipulator in the least squares sense, so that the minimal parameters are equivalent to the identifiable parameters. The least squares concept is used to introduce terminology for the minimal linear combinations (MLCs) of the system parameters that define a set of linear combinations of the system parameters. The number of elements of the set is minimal, yet the set still completely determines the system. Furthermore, it is shown that the problem of finding a set of MLCs of a manipulator can be simplified to that of finding two individual sets of MLCs that determine the entries of the inertia matrix and the gravity load. Although the approach is applied to the inertia constants of composite bodies to obtain a set of MLCs identical to an earlier one, the result is newly interpreted in the least squares sense. The approach itself is a new method for finding the identifiable parameters of a manipulator, and it yields some new insight into the manipulator dynamics. The crucial feature is that a set of MLCs found by using the present approach is guaranteed to be identifiable. The earlier approaches always require an identification method to verify the results. An equivalence theorem is also presented that rigorously states the equivalence between the different sets of minimal parameters. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A 4-MB on-chip L2 cache for a 90-nm 1.6-GHz 64-bit microprocessor

A 4-MB L2 data cache was implemented for a 64-bit 1.6-GHz SPARC(r) RISC microprocessor. Static sense amplifiers were used in the SRAM arrays and for global data repeaters, resulting in robust and flexible timing operation. Elimination of the global clock grid over the SRAM array saves power, enabled by combining the clock information with array select signals. Redundancy was implemented flexibly, with shift circuits outside the main data array for area efficiency. The chip integrates 315 million transistors and uses an 8-metal-layer 90-nm CMOS process.
