Based on bibliometric methods, this paper describes the global institutionalization of nanotechnology research from the mid-1980s to 2006. Owing to an extremely strong dynamics, the institutionalization of nanotechnology is likely to surpass those of major disciplines in only a few years. A breakdown of the relative institutionalizations strengths by the main geographical regions, countries, research sectors, disciplines, and institutional types provides a very diverse picture over the time period because of different national science policies. The results allow a critical assessment of the different science policies based on the relative institutionalizations strengths as well as the conclusion that the institutionalization process has run out of control of individual governments who once induced the development.  相似文献

We prove several essential fractal properties, such as positivity, finiteness or local infinity, of Hausdorff and packing measures of radial Julia sets for large subclasses of entire and meromorphic functions considered in our previous work: çGeometric thermodynamical formalism and real analyticity for meromorphic functions of finite order'. Reports an error in the original article by J. Krueger (American Psychologist, 2001, Vol 56[1], pp. 16-26). In Figure 2, on page 22, two of the curves are labeled "p(H0)=.9" and "p(H0)=.1." These labels should have been reversed. (The following abstract of this article originally appeared in record 2001-16601-002.) Null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) is the researcher's workhorse for making inductive inferences. This method has often been challenged, has occasionally been defended, and has persistently been used through most of the history of scientific psychology. This article reviews both the criticisms of NHST and the arguments brought to its defense. The review shows that the criticisms address the logical validity of inferences arising from NHST, whereas the defenses stress the pragmatic value of these inferences. The author suggests that both critics and apologists implicitly rely on Bayesian assumptions. When these assumptions are made explicit, the primary challenge for NHST--and any system of induction--can be confronted. The challenge is to find a solution to the question of replicability. An investigation of the fatigue properties of cast W319-T7, an Al-Si-Cu alloy used in automotive engine components, was conducted using ultrasonic testing equipment with operating frequencies of 20 kHz. The stress-life (S-N) behavior at room temperature was determined for three solidification conditions of this alloy, where stresses for fatigue lives ranging from 105 to 109 cycles were determined. The results are compared to fatigue data acquired using servohydraulic equipment operating at 40 Hz. No influence of loading frequency has been observed. A discrete endurance limit is indicated for each of the three solidification conditions of W319-T7. The scientific and practical implications of this result are discussed. A material model presented previously is modified by introducing a crack growth threshold condition in order to predict the observed endurance limits. The model is shown to effectively predict the influence of solidification time on the fatigue properties of W319-T7.  相似文献

It is proposed that when solving an arithmetic word problem, unsuccessful problem solvers base their solution plan on numbers and keywords that they select from the problem (the direct translation strategy), whereas successful problem solvers construct a model of the situation described in the problem and base their solution plan on this model (the problem-model strategy). Evidence for this hypothesis was obtained in 2 experiments. In Experiment 1, the eye fixations of successful and unsuccessful problem solvers on words and numbers in the problem statement were compared. In Experiment 2, the degree to which successful and unsuccessful problem solvers remember the meaning and exact wording of word problems was examined. The chemical stability of an amorphous silicon carbonitride ceramic, having the composition 0.57SiC·0.43Si3N4·0.49C is studied as a function of nitrogen overpressure at 1873 K. The ceramic suffers a weight loss at p N2 < 3.5 bar (1 bar = 100 kPa), does not show a weight change from 3.5 to 11 bar, and gains weight above 11 bar. The structure of the ceramic changes with pressure: it is crystalline from 1 to 6 bar, amorphous at ∼10 bar, and is crystalline above ∼10 bar. The weight-loss transition, at 3.5 bar, is in excellent agreement with the prediction from thermodynamic analysis when the activities of carbon, SiC, and Si3N4 are set equal to those of the crystalline forms; this implies that the material crystallizes before decomposition. The amorphous to crystalline transition that occurs at ∼10 bar, and which is accompanied by weight gain, is likely to have taken place by a different mechanism. A nucleation and growth reaction with the atmospheric nitrogen is proposed as the likely mechanism. The supersaturation required to nucleate α-Si3N4 crystals is calculated to be 30 kJ/mol.  相似文献

MOM22 is a component of the protein import complex of the mitochondrial outer membrane of Neurospora crassa. Using the newly developed procedure of 'sheltered disruption', we created a heterokaryotic strain harboring two nuclei, one with a null allele of the mom-22 gene and the other with a wild-type allele. Homokaryons bearing the mom-22 disruption could not be isolated, suggesting that mom-22 is an essential gene. The mutant nucleus can be forced to predominate in the heterokaryon through the use of specific nutritional and inhibitor resistance markers. Cultivation of the heterokaryon under conditions favoring the mutant nucleus resulted in selective depletion of MOM22. MOM22-depleted cells did not grow and contained mitochondria with an altered morphology and protein composition. Protein import into isolated, MOM22-depleted mitochondria was abolished for most precursor proteins destined for all subcompartments. In contrast, precursors of MOM19, MOM22 and MOM72 became inserted normally into the outer membrane, defining a novel MOM22-independent import pathway which remained intact in mutant mitochondria. Furthermore, the specific binding of the ADP/ATP carrier to the outer membrane was unaffected, but subsequent transport across the outer membrane did not occur. Our data show that MOM22 is an essential component of Neurospora cells specifically required for the biogenesis of mitochondria.  相似文献

PATIENT: A 14-year-old boy suffered from an acute bilateral blindness which occurred in 24-h time, accompanied by headache and raised temperature, with inconspicuous optic nerve head and fundus. After diagnosis of empyema with magnet resonance tomography (MRT) the sphenoid sinus was fenestrated and streptococcus pneumoniae isolated. Liquor and serology being inconspicuous, there was no evidence of leucaemic or autoimmune disease, intoxication or intracranial tumor. CLINICAL COURSE: The condition of the patient improved under systemic antibiotic therapy. The bilateral amaurosis remained and opticus atrophy developed. CONCLUSION: A bilateral amaurosis with descending opticus atrophy as a consequence of a sphenoiditis and spreading inflammation to the meninges and the optic nerve in the area of the chiasm is a rare event. The imaging technique of the MRT offers new opportunities for an early and more pointed diagnosis and therapy.  相似文献
