Background  

Child and infant malnourishment is a significant and growing problem in the developing world. Malnourished children are at high risk for negative health outcomes over their lifespans. Philani, a paraprofessional home visiting program, was developed to improve childhood nourishment. This paper analyses horizontal and vertical price dynamics in the EU petroleum markets. The results indicate that the cross-country price differentials have significant impact on the local price adjustments. We investigate the cross-national price spill-overs and find that the extent of the welfare transfer due to asymmetric price transmission, when analysed in a cross-country setting, is less pronounced than claimed in previous contributions in this area. We also find empirical evidence, although indirect, for the politically charged concept of “fuel tourism”, using a pan-European cross-product time series dataset.  相似文献

Call centres are increasingly being utilised in public sector programmes to facilitate and manage communication between numerous stakeholders. Yet, the impact of call centres on projects has not been investigated. This paper reports on a survey with 92 respondents that assessed the impact of a call centre for a repair and maintenance programme. An empirically verified model is presented to illustrate the relationship between call centre communication and project performance. A balance of frequent informal and formal communication is shown to reduce mistrust and conflict of interest resulting from each party trying to maximise his respective economic position in the principal–agency relationship. The data provides evidence that a call centre improves the communication, collaboration and trust in project principal–agency relationships which, in turn, is perceived to contribute to project performance.  相似文献

We studied the high temperature performance of soy meal processed to different protein concentrations (flour, concentrate, and isolate), as well as formulated soy-based adhesives, and commercial nonsoy adhesives for comparison. No thermal transitions were seen in phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde (PRF) or soy-phenol-formaldehyde (SoyPF) or in as-received soy flour adhesive during differential scanning calorimetry scans heating at 10?°C/min between 35 and 235?°C. Heat flow rates decreased in the order soy flour (as received)?>?SoyPF?>?PRF?>?emulsion polymer isocyanate (EPI). In thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) scans from 110 to 300?°C at 2?°C/min, total weight loss decreased in the order soy flour (as-received)>SoyPF?>?PRF?>?casein?>?maple?>?EPI. For bio-based materials, the total weight loss (TGA) decreased in the order soy flour (as-received) > concentrate, casein?>?isolate. Dynamic mechanical analysis from 35 to 235?°C at 5?°C/min of two veneers bonded by cured adhesive showed 30–40% decline in storage modulus for maple compared to 45–55% for the adhesive made from soy flour in water (Soy Flour) and 70–80% for a commercial poly(vinyl acetate) modified for heat resistance. DMA on glass fiber mats showed thermal softening temperatures increasing in the order Soy Flour?<?casein?<?isolate?<?concentrate. We suggest that the low molecular weight carbohydrates plasticize the flour product. When soy-based adhesives were tested in real bondlines in DMA and creep tests in shear, they showed less decrease in storage modulus than the glass fiber-supported specimens. This suggests that interaction with the wood substrate improved the heat resistance property of the adhesive. Average hot shear strengths (ASTM D7247) were 4.6 and 3.1?MPa for SoyPF and Soy Flour compared to 4.7 and 0.8?MPa for PRF and EPI and 4.7 for solid maple. As a whole, these data suggest that despite indications of heat sensitivity when tested neat, soy-based adhesives are likely to pass the heat resistance criterion required for structural adhesives.  相似文献

Low impact development (LID) strategies are being encouraged in many communities as an approach to reduce potential adverse impacts of development on receiving streams. Many questions exist regarding how well various LID strategies perform in different settings, just as similar questions have been raised regarding performance of traditional stormwater best management practices (BMPs). Whereas historical focus on BMP performance has been water quality concentrations or loads, characterization of volume reduction benefits for both conventional and LID practices is increasingly an objective of researchers and stormwater managers. More than a decade ago, Urban Water Resources Research Council (UWRRC) members worked to develop a set of standardized monitoring and reporting protocols for traditional BMPs and to establish a master database for the purpose of evaluating BMP performance and the factors affecting performance. This effort culminated in the International Stormwater BMP Database (www.bmpdatabase.org), which contains data for more than 360 BMPs and continues to operate as a clearinghouse for stormwater BMP data and performance analyses. During 2008–2009, the International Stormwater BMP Database project expanded to better integrate LID into the database and develop a set of metrics that can be used to characterize BMP performance with regard to surface runoff volume reduction. This paper provides a condensed overview and progress report on the LID-focused effort, including the following topics: (1)?monitoring guidance for LID at the overall site development level, (2)?an overview of recent changes to the International Stormwater BMP Database to better accommodate LID studies, (3)?a summary of LID studies currently included in the database, and (4)?a proposed approach for evaluating performance of LID studies with regard to reducing surface runoff volumes.  相似文献

Objective: The authors conducted a meta-analysis of empirical studies investigating associations between indices of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and intimate relationship problems to empirically synthesize this literature. Method: A literature search using PsycINFO, Medline, Published International Literature on Traumatic Stress (PILOTS), and Dissertation Abstracts was performed. The authors identified 31 studies meeting inclusion criteria. Results: True score correlations (ρ) revealed medium-sized associations between PTSD and intimate relationship discord (ρ = .38, N = 7,973, K = 21), intimate relationship physical aggression perpetration (ρ = .42, N = 4,630, K = 19), and intimate relationship psychological aggression perpetration (ρ = .36, N = 1,501, K = 10). The strength of the association between PTSD and relationship discord was higher in military (vs. civilian) samples, and when the study was conducted in the United States (vs. other country), and the study represented a doctoral dissertation (vs. published article). The strength of the association between PTSD and physical aggression was higher in military (vs. civilian) samples, males (vs. females), community (vs. clinical) samples, studies examining PTSD symptom severity (vs. diagnosis), when the physical aggression measure focused exclusively on severe violence (vs. a more inclusive measure), and the study was published (vs. dissertation). For the PTSD–psychological aggression association, 98% of the variance was accounted for by methodological artifacts such as sampling and measurement error; consequently, no moderators were examined in this relationship. Conclusions: Findings highlight a need for the examination of models explaining the relationship difficulties associated with PTSD symptomatology and interventions designed to treat problems in both areas. The phase evolution occurring during the reaction between corrosive V2O5 (Tm = 690 °C) and a plasma-sprayed 7 wt.% Y2O3–ZrO2 (YSZ) coating from 700 to 900 °C has been investigated in situ by X-ray diffraction. The temperature and time of interaction between the V2O5 and YSZ coating determines the phases observed. Between 700 and 750 °C, reaction products of ZrV2O7 and YVO4 were observed within minutes of reaching the test temperature. m-ZrO2 was observed after 220 and 60 min at 700 and 750 °C, respectively. The simultaneous formation of both ZrV2O7 and YVO4 at the beginning of the reaction along with the delay of the m-ZrO2 formation suggests similar reactivity between both Zr and Y with V2O5. The weight percent of the ZrV2O7 phase began to diminish after 150 and 60 min at 700 and 750 °C, respectively. For reaction temperatures of 800 and 900 °C, there is a rapid decrease in the amount of t′-ZrO2 and a rapid increase in the amount of m-ZrO2 with reaction time. YVO4 was also observed at these reaction temperatures. SEM and TEM microstructural observations confirmed the phases detected from the in situ XRD experiments. Reactions between YSZ and V2O5 suggest that the formation of a liquid phase due to the high solubility of both zirconia and yttria in vanadia is the dominate mechanism that damages the coating. The thermal conductivity of a plasma-sprayed YSZ coating reacted with up to 1 wt.% V2O5 did not significantly change due to the small volume affected.  相似文献

This paper presents an experimental study of scaling of polypropylene and copper tubes exposed to flowing tap water over an eight week period. The study was motivated by the recent interest in switching from copper to polymeric materials in heat exchangers and absorbers used in solar water heaters. The chemistry of the tap water is controlled to provide mildly supersaturated conditions at pH equal to 8 and 40 °C. Supersaturation is 5.0 with respect to calcite and 7.9 with respect to hydroxyapatite. These experimental conditions are a departure from the common practice of accelerated testing with distilled water highly saturated with respect to calcium carbonate and thus better represent conditions expected in solar systems. The microstructure and composition of the scale as it grows are examined with scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ion chromatography. The results show scaling in tap water is slower than scaling in distilled or deionized water with a single supersaturated component. In the case of copper, prolonged exposure to tap water oxidizes the surface of the tube and subsequently affects scaling. The oxidized copper surface is more susceptible to calcium phosphate scaling and this tendency results in the higher scaling rate for copper than for polypropylene in water containing phosphate. The scaling rates for polypropylene and copper tubes are 0.8 × 10−10 and 1.7 × 10−10 (mol Ca)/(m2s), respectively.  相似文献
