An asymptotic extraction process is developed which leads to an efficient method for the evaluation of the electric field from a Hertzian dipole in a layered geometry. This technique allows for a rapidly converging expression for the electric field which remains well behaved as the source and observation heightsz', zcoincide. A useful application of this method is in the calculation of mutual impedance between printed dipoles.  相似文献

The standardisation of frozen hydrated bulk biological specimens using gelatin standards is described. The relationship between corrected elemental X-ray counts and ionic concentration was found to be linear, and minimum detectable limits for each element are stated. Variations in uncorrected standard curves were found to be due to changes in aluminium coating thickness. There was an inverse relationship between coating thickness and elemental X-ray counts. The factors causing this are discussed. To avoid errors arising from inconsistent aluminium thickness, experimental material should only be compared with standards of similar aluminium net counts. This can be achieved most easily by mounting and analysing specimen and standard together.  相似文献

This paper presents a particle penetration model predicting particle penetration coefficient (Pp) through a narrow crack of arbitrary incline angles (θ). The objective was to simulate Pp for outdoor-to-indoor particle penetration for residential infiltration conditions. This model assumes laminar infiltration flow and considers particle deposition from both gravitational sedimentation and Brownian diffusion. For micron-sized particles, modeling results indicate that gravitational sedimentation is the major deposition mechanism. Pp increases monotonically with ∣θ∣ because effective particle sedimentation velocity (vs?cos?θ) decreases monotonically with ∣θ∣. For submicron-sized particles (0.1?μm), Brownian diffusion is the major particle deposition mechanism. Because Brownian diffusion is a nondirectional deposition mechanism, crack inclination did not affect Pp. This study applied this model to estimate Pp for L-shaped cracks, and validated modeling results with experiments. Experimental results indicated that inertial impaction and crack entrance cutoff effects were not significant particle deposition mechanisms for the test micron-sized particles. Gravitational sedimentation was the major deposition mechanism. An L-shaped crack can be simulated as the combination of horizontal and vertical sections. This model agreed reasonably with experimental results.  相似文献

The binding of IgG in antiserum to Escherichia coli J5 to the surface of Enterobacteriaceae and to cell wall fragments released from serum-exposed bacteria was studied in a search for potentially protective epitopes other than lipopolysaccharide (LPS). IgG titers to multiple heterologous gram-negative smooth bacteria increased following incubation of the bacteria in serum and decreased following absorption with serum-exposed heterologous bacteria. IgG eluted from absorbing bacteria bound to at least three conserved bacterial outer membrane proteins (OMPs), but not LPS, as assessed by immunoblotting. The same OMPs were present in LPS-containing macromolecular cell wall fragments released by incubation of heterologous gram-negative bacteria in human serum. Part of the protection offered by J5 antiserum could be from binding of IgG to conserved OMPs at the bacterial surface or to OMPs in cell-wall fragments released from dying bacteria.  相似文献

Relationships among health care costs, social support, and occupational stress are investigated. Health care cost data were collected over two years for 260 working individuals. Multiple regression analyses were used to control for initial health care costs, age, and gender in predicting later costs; independent variables were stress, strain, social support, and their interactions. Main effects and interactions each accounted for significant proportions of the variance in various health care costs.  相似文献

Prostaglandin E2 levels in isolated rat islets were increased from 64 +/- 11 pg/30 islets when incubated in medium containing 2 mM glucose to 115 +/- 9 pg/30 islets in medium containing 20 mM glucose. In contrast, glyceraldehyde (10 mM) reduced prostaglandin E2 levels to 29 +/- 6 pg/30 islets. Inhibition of glucose metabolism by mannoheptulose (10 mM) abolished the stimulatory effect of glucose on prostaglandin E2 levels and inhibited glucose-induced insulin release. The cyclooxygenase inhibitor, flurbiprofen (20 microM), did not affect insulin release caused by glucose or glyceraldehyde. In the presence of 1 mg/ml bovine serum albumin, insulin secretion induced by 20 mM glucose (6.9 +/- 1.1% of islet insulin content) was reduced by the lipoxygenase inhibitor BW755 C (20 microM) to 3.1 +/- 0.6%, and by the phospholipase A2 inhibitor, p-bromophenacyl bromide (10 microM), to 2.1 +/- 0.8%. In the absence of bovine serum albumin the inhibitory action of BW755 C and p-bromophenacyl bromide on glucose-induced insulin release was significantly more pronounced. These drugs whether in the presence or absence of bovine serum albumin, did not affect glyceraldehyde-stimulated insulin secretion. Glyceraldehyde (10 mM), potentiated glucose-induced insulin release in the presence of 2-8 mM glucose, but not for 10-20 mM glucose. Although the phospholipase A2 activator, melittin, initiated insulin release in the presence of 2 mM glucose and enhanced 10 mM glyceraldehyde-stimulated insulin secretion it had no effect on 20 mM glucose-induced insulin release. The high-temperature crystallization of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) from dilute organic solutions was achieved through the introduction of a non-solvent, or precipitating agent, at the desired crystallization temperature. The morphology and crystal structure were examined for crystals produced from PPTA polymer with two different molecular weights (Mw = 46000 and 3430 g mol−1), using transmission electron microscopy. For the high-molecular-weight polymer, ribbon-like crystals were produced, while the low-molecular-weight polymer yielded small needles or platelets. In both cases, electron diffraction showed that the Northolt allomorph was obtained. For the high-molecular-weight polymer, the molecular axes were parallel to the ribbon axes in a chain-extended type structure. A hypothesis for the orientation of the low-molecular-weight PPTA in the small platelets, is also given.  相似文献

Between February 1991 and April 1992, eight undergraduates at a US residential university and one at a nearby 2-year college contracted serogroup C meningococcal disease. A case-control investigation with 20 controls per case, oropharyngeal carriage surveys, and multilocus enzyme electrophoresis (MEE) of serogroup C isolates were used to identify factors contributing to the outbreak. All eight sterile-site isolates from cases were closely related by MEE and were similar (though not identical) to the strain associated with the 1991-1992 epidemic of meningococcal disease in eastern Canada. Disease was associated with cigarette smoking (p = 0.012), recent patronage of campus-area bars (p = 0.034), estimated amount of time spent in campus-area bars (p = 0.0003), and, especially, recent patronage of one specific bar, bar A (p = 0.0006; odds ratio = 23.1, 95% confidence interval 3.0-571.5). In carriage surveys, 1,528 throat cultures taken from (primarily student) noncases yielded only five (0.3%) strains that were identical by MEE to those from cases. Two of these were found among 22 cultures obtained from bar A employees in spring 1992. Some cases in this outbreak may have followed transmission of the epidemic strain in bar A. Campus bar environments may facilitate the spread of meningococcal disease among teenagers and young adults.  相似文献
