Non‐aqueous extraction of bitumen from oil sands has the potential to reduce fresh water demand of the extraction process and eliminate tailings ponds. In this study, different light hydrocarbon solvents, including aromatics, cycloalkanes, biologically derived solvents and mixtures of solvents were compared for extraction of bitumen from Alberta oil sands at room temperature and ambient pressure. The solvents are compared based on bitumen recovery, the amount of residual solvent in the extracted oil sands tailings and the content of fine solids in the extracted bitumen. The extraction experiments were carried out in a multistage process with agitation in rotary mixers and vibration sieving. The oil sands tailings were dried under ambient conditions, and their residual solvent contents were measured by a purge and trap system followed by gas chromatography. The elemental compositions of the extraction tailings were measured to calculate bitumen recovery. Supernatants from the extraction tests were centrifuged to separate and measure the contents of fine solid particles. Except for limonene and isoprene, the tested solvents showed good bitumen recoveries of around 95%. The solvent drying rates and residual solvent contents in the extracted oil sands tailings correlated to solvent vapour pressure. The contents of fine solids in the extracted bitumen (supernatant) were below 2.9% for all solvents except n‐heptane‐rich ones. Based on these findings, cyclohexane is the best candidate solvent for bitumen extraction, with 94.4% bitumen recovery, 5 mg of residual solvent per kilogram of extraction tailings and 1.4 wt% fine solids in the recovered bitumen. © 2012 Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering  相似文献

The use of silver as an antimicrobial agent has exhibited great interest in recent years. In this research, poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH)–silver acetate-based antimicrobial materials were prepared at high temperature by reactive extrusion. Silver acetates were used without pretreatment. The thermal reaction of silver acetates in the material and their effect on the thermal and mechanical properties of the polymer were investigated as a function of their concentration. The dispersed silver acetate salts within the EVOH matrix have displayed a significant thermal reaction. This reaction of metallic salts was partial when the extrusion temperature was fixed at 190 °C and completed at 230 °C. The antimicrobial agents also had significant effects on the properties of the matrix. Reductions of glass temperature and storage modulus were observed by the analyses. All the variations were dependent on both the concentration of silver acetate and the extrusion parameters. The antimicrobial activity was studied and demonstrated a promising potential to create an antimicrobial material in a one-step solvent free extrusion method. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. The capability of MCM-41 silica for accepting and delivering poorly soluble azithromycin (AZT) in water is reported as robust drug delivery system. This property has been evidenced by using two MCM-41 samples with different pore sizes as hosts of AZT. The choice of this macrolide antibiotic is due not only to its low bioavailability but also to its molecular size which lies in the range of pore diameter of MCM-41s. The drug was loaded inside the pore voids of the mesoporous when MCM-41 was stirred at AZT solution, based on XRD, Nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms, TGA analysis data and FT-IR spectroscopy. The amount of AZT stored inside the pores of MCM-41 s was between 22 and 25 wt%. The loaded drug was released in different rates from the particles by changing the pH (1.7 and 7.4) to give a smart pH-responsive carrier system. The drug release kinetics was fitted to Korsmeyer–Peppas and Higuchi models which indicated that the rate of drug release was controlled by the diffusion of the drug. The result of the present study confirms that the controlled adsorption and liberation of AZT may improve the oral bioavailability of poor water soluble AZT. This study demonstrates the feasibility of designing reliable drug delivery systems by appropriate choice of the matrix and the organic molecule. In general, MCM-41 is a promising matrix for AZT adsorption with different application from drug delivery to wastewater filtration.  相似文献

Chitosan and its derivatives are widely used in drug delivery systems due to their bio-degradebility, bio-compatibility and absorption enhancing properties. Many peptide and protein derived therapeutics cannot be administered through oral rout because of the proteolytic condition of gastro-intestinal tract and their low bio-availability. Insulin is a peptide drug which is widely used in diabetics as repeated daily injection. Due to the fact that there are receptors for didpeptides and vitamine B12 in small intestine, in this research work novel derivatives of chitosan and trimethyl chitosan conjugated with glycyl-glycine, alanyl-alaninie and vitamine B12 were synthesized and characterized. The structure of conjugates as well as substitution of different functional groups was confirmed by different instrumental analytical methods such as Fourier transform infrared, magnetic resonance, and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. Nano-particles of aforementioned loaded with insulin were prepared and their size, surface electrical charge and morphology characterized and their release profile were studied. The results are promising and reveal that these new chitosan and trimethyl chitosan derivatives are potential vehicles for protein and peptide drug molecules.  相似文献

In this study, the enhancement of physical absorption of carbon dioxide by Fe3O4‐water nanofluid under the influence of AC and DC magnetic fields was investigated. Furthermore, a gas‐liquid mass transfer model for single bubble systems was applied to predict mass transfer parameters. The coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles were prepared using co‐percipitation method. The results from characterization indicated that the nanoparticles surfaces were covered with hydroxyl groups and nanoparticles diameter were 10–13 nm. The findings showed that the mass transfer rate and solubility of carbon dioxide in magnetic nanofluid increased with an increase in the magnetic field strength. Results indicated that the enhancement of carbon dioxide solubility and average molar flux gas into liquid phase, particularly in the case of AC magnetic field. Moreover, results demonstrated that mass diffusivity of CO2 in nanofluid and renewal surface factor increased when the intensity of the field increased and consequently diffusion layer thickness decreased. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 2176–2186, 2017  相似文献

The properties of high‐speed tool steels can be improved by modifying their chemical composition or the technology of production. Nitrogen alloying is an attractive technology to enhance the mechanical and physical properties of tool steels. In this work, modified super hard high‐speed tool steel was produced through nitrogen alloying and decreasing the level of cobalt content in investigated steels. This work aims to study the effect of nitrogen as alloying element on carbides and carbo‐nitrides precipitates type, shape, and size for investigated steels. From the results obtained from Thermo‐Calc, it was concluded that nitrogen alloying produced large amount of stable austenite, also eutectic carbides precipitates (M6C and M7C3) were stable at room temperature. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images for traditional grade showed that the as cast structure contains beside the carbides network other single carbides precipitates. While on the other hand the selected area diffraction pattern (SADP) images of nitrogen alloyed grade shows fine carbides and carbo‐nitrides precipitates with more amount of retained austenite in the ferrite matrix, they showed also the presence of the eutectic precipitates as well as the dislocations.  相似文献

Psychophysical experiments were conducted in the UK, Taiwan, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Argentina, and Iran to assess colour emotion for two‐colour combinations using semantic scales warm/cool, heavy/light, active/passive, and like/dislike. A total of 223 observers participated, each presented with 190 colour pairs as the stimuli, shown individually on a cathode ray tube display. The results show consistent responses across cultures only for warm/cool, heavy/light, and active/passive. The like/dislike scale, however, showed some differences between the observer groups, in particular between the Argentinian responses and those obtained from the other observers. Factor analysis reveals that the Argentinian observers preferred passive colour pairs to active ones more than the other observers. In addition to the cultural difference in like/dislike, the experimental results show some effects of gender, professional background (design vs. nondesign), and age. Female observers were found to prefer colour pairs with high‐lightness or low‐chroma values more than their male counterparts. Observers with a design background liked low‐chroma colour pairs or those containing colours of similar hue more than nondesign observers. Older observers liked colour pairs with high‐lightness or high‐chroma values more than young observers did. Based on the findings, a two‐level theory of colour emotion is proposed, in which warm/cool, heavy/light, and active/passive are identified as the reactive‐level responses and like/dislike the reflective‐level response. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A strategy for improving speed of the previously proposed evolving neuro-fuzzy model (ENFM) is presented in this paper to make it more appropriate for online applications. By considering a recursive extension of Gath?CGeva clustering, the ENFM takes advantage of elliptical clusters for defining validity region of its neurons which leads to better modeling with less number of neurons. But this necessitates the computing of reverse and determinant of the covariance matrices which are time consuming in online applications with large number of input variables. In this paper a strategy for recursive estimation of singular value decomposition components of covariance matrices is proposed which converts the burdensome computations to calculating reverse and determinant of a diagonal matrix while keeping the advantages of elliptical clusters. The proposed method is applied to online detection of epileptic seizures in addition to prediction of Mackey?CGlass time series and modeling a time varying heat exchanger. Simulation results show that required time for training and test of fast ENFM is far less than its basic model. Moreover its modeling ability is similar to the ENFM which is superior to other online modeling approaches.  相似文献
