We present an interactive algorithm for continuous collision detection between deformable models. We introduce multiple techniques to improve the culling efficiency and the overall performance of continuous collision detection. First, we present a novel formulation for continuous normal cones and use these normal cones to efficiently cull large regions of the mesh as part of self-collision tests. Second, we introduce the concept of “procedural representative triangles” to remove all redundant elementary tests between nonadjacent triangles. Finally, we exploit the mesh connectivity and introduce the concept of “orphan sets” to eliminate redundant elementary tests between adjacent triangle primitives. In practice, we can reduce the number of elementary tests by two orders of magnitude. These culling techniques have been combined with bounding volume hierarchies and can result in one order of magnitude performance improvement as compared to prior collision detection algorithms for deformable models. This study was done to identify the cause of intestinal obstruction with particular emphasis on the gynecologic and perioperative related causes. All medical records from females with the discharge diagnosis "intestinal obstruction" from 1988 to 1991 at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center were requested. The patient series consisted of the first 100 completed charts received. Forty-eight percent of those patients with intestinal obstruction had experienced a previous gynecologic or obstetric event that could account for the obstruction. Primarily, the gynecologist managed more than 20 percent of all female patients with intestinal obstruction. The most common causative factors contributing to intestinal obstruction were postoperative adhesions (59 percent) and tumor (17 percent). Fifty-six percent of the patients with intestinal obstruction associated with postoperative adhesions had a history of previous gynecologic and obstetric operation. Hysterectomy was the most common previously performed operation. In this series, cesarean section was less likely and myomectomy was more likely to cause subsequent intestinal obstruction than expected. Of 59 female patients with postoperative adhesions associated with intestinal obstruction, 31 had the original operative reports available for analysis. Eleven of these patients were taken to the operating room for management of the obstruction. In the nine patients who had surgical peritoneal closure in the original operation, the adhesions causing the obstruction were always to the site of reperitonealization. In the two patients in whom the peritoneum was left open, the adhesions causing obstruction were remote from the site of spontaneous reperitonealization. In an unselected patient series of intestinal obstruction, a history of previous gynecologic pathology is a significant factor contributing to the total number of instances of intestinal obstruction in females. The interpretation of pore dimensions based on physical ad-desorption analyses is central to the characterization of pore network structure. Several approaches have been proposed and are commonly employed in the analysis of physical adsorption and/or desorption to deduce the dimensions of the porous network. These approaches assume either theoretical (e.g., BET, the Halsey equation as interpreted by Pierce et al., or the more recent analyses of microporosity) or standard isotherms as model(s) for the sequential calculations required in estimating the pore network dimensions. Subsequent representation of the pore dimensions and the relationship between these distributions in dimension and other experimental parameters (such as catalytic activity, adsorptivity or transport); thus, depend explicitly on the model employed in the analyses. Each instrument currently available for the measurement of porous solid structure by sorption employs the same specific models for the relationship between the volume ad-desorbed and the dimensions of the porous network that is being characterized.This paper analyzes the interpretation of porous dimensions based on the sequential calculations required in the analyses. A new approach is proposed which is based on a modification to current practices reflecting Halsey's original theory for the thickness of the adsorbed layer (as a function of P/P
0). Further, the calculations of the incremental changes in the exposed surface area are discussed as they relate to pore network structure. A method is proposed to infer the differences in pore shape. Sorption data are analyzed by these new approaches, and these analyses will be compared with those approaches currently employed. First stage slurry reactor Fischer-Tropsch (FT) yield data from Mobil's two-step pilot plant operations for the DOE have been correlated using a modified Schulz-Flory approach but allowing for changes in the probability of chain growth, , at key product molecular weights. Triple values of are invoked to explain (1) the high methane yield and (2) the very broad molecular weight distribution of the wax fraction, as compared to (3) moderate values of 2 of between 0.79 and 0.85 for the C2–C20 hydrocarbons. Over this range, wax yields from 10 to 76 wt% are accommodated, at values of 3 from 0.90 to 0.98. The second break in the yield-molecular weight curve occurs at the carbon number where most of the component remains in the reactor as liquid rather than leaving as vapor product. It is assumed that this is a function of vapor-liquid equilibrium. The correlation has proven useful in developing a computer model of the FT synthesis loop which is part of a baseline design and economic study for DOE/PETC. 相似文献

Multiple grooved substrata with groove depth 5 m were found to facilitate the healing of completely divided rat flexor tendons in vitro. Sections of tendons cultured on plain substrata showed only partial healing with incompletely sealed epitenon layers and immature thin collagen fibres. Tendons cultured on patterned substrata healed with complete restoration of the epitenon layer and reconstitution of the internal structure of collagen fibres. Epitenon fibroblasts isolated from the surface of rat flexor tendons were shown to be more sensitive to topographical features than fibroblasts of the same size BHK fibroblasts. They remained more elongated and better aligned to the groove direction than BHK cells. Multiple grooved substrata facilitated epitenon cell movement. Cells were found to move with higher speed on patterned substrata than on plain substrata. In summary, we conclude that the use of multiple grooved substrata promotes tendon healing in vitro and may find application in clinical practice in tendon repair. 相似文献

Floor control refers to the need for coordinating activities occurred in synchronously cooperating applications shared among
collaborators. We address this for ubiquitous collaboration—the capability of multiple users to link together with disparate
access device anytime and anywhere. Floor control has been studied for years but most researchers focus on relaxed coordination
mechanisms with stationary devices that allow updates by any user on any object and resolve the uncoordinated updates. In
this paper we present a floor control mechanism, called XGSP-Floor, which implements a coordination mechanism at application
level for enabling users to consistently share the same resource in real time (synchronous collaboration) in ubiquitous collaboration
environment. The implementation platform on cell phone devices may not be new. But we believe the implementation and experiment
for XGSP-Floor on cell phone devices is a new challenge in ubiquitous collaboration environment even though the coordination
mechanism can intuitively impose a tremendous overhead in worst case. We also describe the results of the modeling of XGSP-Floor
and formal verification to prove the correctness of the modeling using Colored Petri Nets. We describe lessons learned and

Web applications are fast becoming more widespread, larger, more interactive, and more essential to the international use of computers. It is well understood that web applications must be highly dependable, and as a field we are just now beginning to understand how to model and test Web applications. One straightforward technique is to model Web applications as finite state machines. However, large numbers of input fields, input choices and the ability to enter values in any order combine to create a state space explosion problem. This paper evaluates a solution that uses constraints on the inputs to reduce the number of transitions, thus compressing the FSM. Many text searches are meant to identify one particular fact or one particular section of a document. Unfortunately, predominant
search paradigms focus mostly on identifying relevant documents and leave the burden of within-document searching on the user.
This research explores term distribution visualizations as a means to more clearly identify both the relevance of documents
and the location of specific information within them. We present a set of term distribution visualizations, introduce a Focus+Context
model for within-document search and navigation, and describe the design and results of a 34-subject user study. This user
study shows that these visualizations—with the exception of the grey scale histogram variant—are comparable in usability to
our Grep interface. This is impressive given the substantial experience of our users with Grep functionality. Overall, we
conclude that user do not find this visualization model difficult to use and understand. 相似文献

Actuated artificial whiskers modeled on rat macrovibrissae can provide effective tactile sensor systems for autonomous robots.
This article focuses on texture classification using artificial whiskers and addresses a limitation of previous studies, namely,
their use of whisker deflection signals obtained under relatively constrained experimental conditions. Here we consider the
classification of signals obtained from a whiskered robot required to explore different surface textures from a range of orientations
and distances. This procedure resulted in a variety of deflection signals for any given texture. Using a standard Gaussian
classifier we show, using both hand-picked features and ones derived from studies of rat vibrissal processing, that a robust
rough-smooth discrimination is achievable without any knowledge of how the whisker interacts with the investigated object.
On the other hand, finer discriminations appear to require knowledge of the target’s relative position and/or of the manner
in which the whisker contact its surface.
