Due to the progressive increase in population, sustainable development of desert land in Egypt has become a strategic priority in order to meet the increasing demands of a growing population for food and housing. Such obligations require efficient compilation of accurate land-cover information in addition to detailed analysis of archival land-use changes over an extended time span. In this study, we applied a methodology for mapping land cover and monitoring change in patterns related to agricultural development and urban expansion in the desert of the Kom Ombo area. We utilized the available records of multitemporal Landsat Thematic Mapper and Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus images to produce three land-use/land-cover maps for 1988, 1999 and 2008.

Post-classification change detection analysis shows that agricultural development increased by 39.2% through the study period with an average annual rate of land development of 8.7 km2 year?1. We report a total increase in urbanization over the selected time span of approximately 28.0 km2 with most of this urban growth concentrated to the east of the Nile and occurring through encroachment on the former old cultivated lands. The archival record of the length of irrigation canals showed that their estimated length was 341.5, 461.8 and 580.1 km in the years 1988, 1999 and 2008, respectively, with a 70% increase in canal length from 1988 to 2008. Our results not only accurately quantified the land-cover changes but also delineated their spatial patterns, showing the efficiency of Landsat data in evaluating landscape dynamics over a particular time span. Such information is critical in making effective policies for efficient and sustainable natural resource management.  相似文献

The problem we address is how to communicate securely with a set of users (the target set) over an insecure broadcast channel. This problem occurs in two application domains: satellite/cable pay TV and the Internet MBone. In these systems, the parameters of major concern are the number of key transmissions and the number of keys held by each receiver. In the Internet domain, previous schemes suggest building a separate key tree for each multicast program, thus incurring a setup cost of at least k log k per program for target sets of size k. In the pay TV domain, a single key structure is used for all programs, but known theoretical bounds show that either very long transmissions are required, or that each receiver needs to keep prohibitively many keys. Our approach is targeted at both domains. Our schemes maintain a single key structure that requires each receiver to keep only a logarithmic number of establishment keys for its entire lifetime. At the same time our schemes admit low numbers of transmissions. In order to achieve these goals, and to break away from the theoretical bounds, we allow a controlled number of users outside the target set to occasionally receive the multicast. This relaxation is appropriate for many scenarios in which the encryption is used to force consumers to pay for a service, rather than to withhold sensitive information. For this purpose, we introduce f-redundant establishment key allocations, which guarantee that the total number of recipients is no more than f times the number of intended recipients. We measure the performance of such schemes by the number of key transmissions they require, by their redundancy f, and by the probability that a user outside the target set (a free-rider) will be able to decrypt the multicast. Egyptian mango seeds were collected as wastes from local fruit processing units and the kernels were separated and dried. This study was carried out on mango seed kernels to clarify their proximate composition, amino acids, phenolic compounds and the characteristics of the extracted oil including unsaponifiable matter constituents, lipid classes and fatty acid composition. Mango seed kernels contained a considerable amount of total phenolic compounds, total lipid, unsaponifiable matter, and a low amount of crude protein, but the quality of protein was good because it was rich in all essential amino acids. Eight phenolic compounds were identified; tannin and vanillin were in highest amounts. Unsaponifiable matter showed the occurrence of high amounts of squaline followed by sterols and tocopherols. Stearic acid was the main saturated fatty acid, while oleic acid was the major unsaturated fatty acid in all lipid classes. The fatty acid composition of total lipid and neutral lipid was similar, while phospholipid had a high amount of palmitic, linoleic and linolenic acids.  相似文献

Nitrous oxide (N2O) flux measurements from an Irish spring barley field managed under conventional and reduced tillage and different N fertilizer applications at the Teagasc Oak Park Research Centre were made for two consecutive seasons. The aim was to investigate the efficacy of reduced tillage and reduced N fertilizer on seasonal fluxes and emission factors of N2O and to study the relationship between crop yield and N-induced fluxes of N2O. The soil is classified as a sandy loam with a pH of 7.4 and a mean organic carbon and nitrogen content at 15 cm of 19 and 1.9 g kg−1 dry soil, respectively. Reduced tillage had no significant effect on N2O fluxes from soils or crop grain yield. Multiple regression analysis revealed that soil moisture and an interaction between soil moisture and soil nitrate are the main significant factors affecting N2O flux. The derived emission factor was 0.6% of the applied N fertilizer, approximately 50% of the IPCC default EF of 1.25% used by the Irish EPA to estimate GHG or the IPCC revised EF of 0.9%. This resulted in huge overestimations of 2,275 and 1,050 tonnes of N2O-N for using the old and revised IPCC default factors respectively. By reducing the applied nitrogen fertilizer by 50% compared to the normal field rate, N2O emissions could be reduced by 57% with no significant decrease on grain yield or quality. In mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), flooding is a required message dissemination technique for network-wide broadcast. The conventional blind flooding algorithm causes broadcast storm problem, a high number of unnecessary packet rebroadcasts thus resulting in high contention and packet collisions. This paper proposes a new probabilistic approach that dynamically fine-tunes the rebroadcasting probability of a node for routing request packets (RREQs) according to the number of neighbour nodes. We evaluate the performance of the proposed approach for the ad hoc on demand distance vector (AODV) routing protocol and compared against the blind flooding, fixed probabilistic and adjusted probabilistic flooding [L.M.M.M. Object-oriented principles have introduced several useful concepts for developing complex software systems. As a result, several methodologies have been suggested for the overall design of software systems based on these concepts. Methodologies and frameworks for designing objects that are to be part of the software systems are currently lacking. This paper proposes anobject design framework andmethodology, which utilizes the object-oriented concepts, for planning, organizing and designing structural engineering design objects. Design objects in an integrated structural engineering system are complex and often related to each other in various different ways. The paper also identifies several important relationships among structural engineering design objects. These relationships serve as communication channels through wich design objects send messages to and receive responses from each other. Several examples, drawn from reinforced concrete structures, will be presented to demonstrate the object design methodology and to illustrate how the framework is effective in reducing the complexity of design objects in an integrated structural engineering system.  相似文献

The capability of artificial neural networks to act as universal function approximators has been traditionally used to model problems in which the relation between dependent and independent variables is poorly understood. In this paper, the capability of an artificial neural network to provide a data-driven approximation of the explicit relation between transmissivity and hydraulic head as described by the groundwater flow equation is demonstrated. Techniques are applied to determine the optimal number of nodes and training patterns needed for a neural network to approximate groundwater parameters for a simulated groundwater modeling case study. Furthermore, the paper explains how such an approximation can be used for the purpose of parameter estimation in groundwater hydrology.  相似文献

An intelligent knowledge-based system for product cost modellingis presented in this paper. The developed system has the capability of selecting a material, as well as machining processes and parameters based on a set of design and production parameters; and of estimating the product cost throughout the entire product development cycle including assembly cost. The proposed system is applied without the need for detailed design information, so that it can be used at an early design stage, and, consequently, redesign cost and longer lead time can be avoided. Hybrid knowledge representation techniques, such as production rules, frame and object oriented are employed to represent manufacturing knowledge. Fuzzy logic-based knowledge representation is applied to deal with uncertainty in the knowledge of cost model to generate reliable cost estimation. This paper deals with cost modelling of both a machining component and an injection moulding component, which is a process that gives high production rates, excellent quality and accuracy of products, and low manufacturing cost. Based on the analysis of the moulded product life cycle, a computer-based cost model was developed which integrated the relationship between cost factors, product development activities, and product geometry. The estimated cost included the costs of material, mould and processing. The system has been validated through a case study.  相似文献
