Coupling of an innovative small PWR and advanced sodium‐cooled fast reactor for incineration of TRU from once‐through PWRs

In the nuclear industry, safely managing spent fuels discharged from PWRs (pressurized water reactors) is an ongoing challenge. In this paper, a synergistic coupling of innovative small long‐cycle PWRs and advanced sodium‐cooled fast reactors is considered to reduce the accumulated TRUs (transuranics) by transmuting them with electricity production. In the coupling strategy, the innovative small PWRs employing UO₂–ThO₂ and fully ceramic micro‐encapsulated fuels are used to deeply burn TRUs from commercial PWRs, while advanced SFRs (sodium‐cooled fast reactors) with actinide recycling are designed to further transmute the TRUs discharged from innovative small PWRs. This work focuses on the core physics analysis of new SFR burner cores using different TRU feeds discharged from small PWRs. Additionally, quasi‐static reactivity balance analyses are performed to understand the safety of the SFR burner cores. The mass flows of TRUs in the nuclear park, which is composed of PWRs, small long‐cycle PWRs, and SFR burners, are analyzed to evaluate TRU inventory reduction. The results of this study show that the advanced SFR burners with all the TRU feed types discharged from the small long‐cycle PWRs have a high TRU consumption rate. They satisfy all of the conditions for self‐controllability under unprotected accidents with a reasonable number of control rods. This coupling strategy requires ~35% less power in conjunction with the advanced SFR burners in the nuclear park and increases the support ratio of SFR burners by ~42% than does the coupling of commercial PWRs and SFR burners. Genetic algorithm-based hysteresis modeling and identification of rotary SMA actuators

This paper describes a new, modified generalized Preisach model for actuators that have severe dead-zone hysteresis, which is mainly observed in rotary SMA actuators. Along with the Preisach model, a new approach of hysteresis modeling and parameter identification using genetic algorithm was proposed. This modeling method achieved significant improvements in both accuracy and computation time. The proposed approach is general; therefore, it can be applied to identify any type of hysteresis. To demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed model, experimental results on hysteresis identification of Rotary SMA Actuator and performance of inverse hysteresis openloop controller are provided and compared.

Doping of Nb to the Ba and Cu Sites in the Y0.6Gd0.4Ba2Cu3O7−δ

Polycrystalline samples of Y_0.6Gd_0.4Ba_2?x Nb _x Cu₃O_7?δ and Y_0.6Gd_0.4Ba₂Cu_3?x Nb _x O_7?δ with different Nb contents (x=0.025, 0.075, 0.125, 0.175 and 0.225) were prepared using the solid state reaction method. Structural and electrical properties of new compounds were investigated with optical microscope, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Four Point Probe (FPP). The results indicated that Nb constituted YBa₂NbO₆ structure instead of substituting to the Y_0.6Gd_0.4Ba₂Cu₃O_7?δ structure. YBa₂NbO₆ structures gathered between grains. Transition temperature did not change significantly, but critical current (J _c) values decreased with increase of Nb concentration. The underlying reason is that the oxygen concentration of compounds remained unchanged due to Gd; thus, T _c values did not change significantly.     

Elucidating the Catalytic Subunit Composition of Distinct Proteasome Subtypes: A Crosslinking Approach Employing Bifunctional Activity‐Based Probes

In addition to two well‐recognized proteasome subtypes—constitutive proteasomes and immunoproteasomes—mounting evidence also suggests the existence of intermediate proteasome subtypes containing unconventional mixtures of catalytic subunits. Although they appear to play unique biological roles, the lack of practical methods for detecting distinct proteasome subtypes has limited functional investigations. Here, we report the development of activity‐based probes that crosslink two catalytic subunits within intact proteasome complexes. Identification of the crosslinked subunit pairs provides direct evidence of the catalytic subunit composition of proteasomes. Using these probes, we found that U266 multiple myeloma cells contain intermediate proteasomes comprising both β1i and β2, but not β1 and β2i, consistent with previous findings with other cell types. Our bifunctional probes can be utilized in functional investigations of distinct proteasome subtypes in various biological settings.     

Design response to rising sea levels in the Maldives: A study into aquatic architecture

Climate change and rising sea levels present immediate threats to humanity. However, the global catastrophe fails to generate sufficient action. Subject to total submergence within 80 years, this study undertakes an iterative design process seeking sustainable adaptation strategies for the coastal island nation of the Maldives, specifically, Malé, its capital, which exists under a “state of alert” by order of government. Research methods include literature reviews, site analysis, mapping, and iterative design processes to develop an implementation framework strategy. Infrastructure concepts are presented as speculative images with context-specific spatial relationships and functions. Concepts do not intend to represent a conclusive prototype, rather, an ideation—a solution-based discourse among key audiences highlighting the need to act decisively and adaptively.
