Safety issues have gained vital importance throughout the construction industry. Many construction companies around the world are implementing safety, health, and environmental management systems to reduce injuries, eliminate illness, and to provide a safe work environment in their construction sites. This paper describes an exploratory study of site safety management in construction sites’ environments. It explains a successful, modern safety, health and environmental management system for a leading construction company based in Hong Kong. A typical site-specific safety plan was utilized to provide safety guidance throughout the construction project. A safety management survey was conducted to determine the status of safety in the construction sites. All employees of the company and its subcontractors participated in the survey from 20 construction projects. In total, 1,022 valid records were obtained from the construction sites. The analysis provided useful information on eight aspects of construction safety, including safety policy and standards, safety organization, safety training, inspecting hazardous conditions, personal protection program, plant and equipment, safety promotion, and management behavior. The findings of the survey provide practical knowledge to construction project managers and construction safety practitioners in order to make their sites safer. The natural level of radioactivity in soil is one of the major causes of external gamma rays exposure. It was considered imperative to measure gamma-ray activity concentrations due to naturally occurring, potentially hazardous radionuclides from 232Th, 226Ra and 40K in soil samples from Punjab, the most populated province of Pakistan. The activity concentrations were measured in soil samples collected from all 34 district headquarters of Punjab province using a P-type coaxial high purity germanium (HPGe)-based gamma-ray spectrometer having a relative efficiency of 60%. The mean activity concentrations for 232Th, 226Ra and 40K were found to be 41 +/- 8, 35 +/- 7 and 615 +/- 143 Bq kg(-1), respectively in soil samples from all 34 district headquarters of Punjab. The mean values of radium equivalent index (Ra(eq)) and total annual external gamma radiation dose were found to be 141 +/- 27 Bq kg(-1)and 0.38 mSv, respectively. Since these estimated radiological impact assessment factors are lower than the recommended values there seems to be no potential radiological health hazard associated with the soils from the district headquarters in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Geological studies show that most of the soils in Punjab have developed on the extensive fluviatile deposits of five rivers and a stable ratio of natural activity concentrations is observed in soil samples of the areas under study.  相似文献

Preparation of chiral 2,3-dihydro-1,4-benzodithiine and methyl-2,3-dihydro-1,4-benzodithiine derivatives with known absolute configurations from the easily accessible chiral synthons benzyl 4-O-trifloxy-2,3-anhydro-beta-L-ribopyranoside and benzyl 4-O-trifloxy-2,3-anhydro-alpha-D-ribopyranoside is described. These compounds showed significant in vitro toxicity of the bloodstream form of Trypanosoma brucei with an IC50 of 11 microM. The parasites' energy metabolism and consumption of oxygen were found to be affected during incubation.  相似文献

Blend membranes of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) and sulfonated polyetherimide (SPEI) have been prepared and investigated as a potential polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) for direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). Polymers were dissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) in different mixing ratios and membranes were casted using a semi-automatic casting machine on a pre-cleaned glass plate. The influence of SPEI percentage on ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake, methanol permeability and proton exchange capacity have been investigated. Blend membranes showed slightly better IEC, water uptake and methanol crossover properties as compare to pure SPEEK; but proton conductivity was slightly lower than that of pure SPEEK membrane. Membrane morphology was investigated by FESEM, TGA and AFM. Overall, a homogeneous surface was observed for most of the blend membranes, with minor phase separation at higher SPEI contents samples. AFM image of the membrane surface shows nanoscale surface roughness.  相似文献

Polystyrene is an efficient thermoplastic having fine processability, chemical inertness, and mechanical performance. Technological advances have led to several industrial appliances of polystyrene-based materials ranging from insulation to electromagnetic interference shielding. In this state-of-the-art review, primarily structure and properties of carbon nanotube and polymer/carbon nanotube composite have been discussed. Carbon nanotube is considered as a brilliant filler for polymers. Therefore, a comprehensive discussion regarding high-performance polystyrene/carbon nanotube composite is presented. Main focus of review is the significance of electromagnetic interference shielding phenomenon in polystyrene/carbon nanotube composite. Composite materials comprising arrays of silver nanoparticles in amphiphilic copolymers have been prepared by sonochemically enhanced borohydride reduction of precursor silver nitrate (AgNO3). The precursor was incorporated into the cores of polymeric micelles formed from block copolymers of polystyrene (PS) or poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). The copolymers were synthesised with varying hydrophobic block lengths from a PEO macroinitiator by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). UV/visible spectroscopy was used to confirm the formation of elemental silver and the effect of sonication time on the appearance of the silver nanoparticles was determined. The growth was faster than when gold nanoparticles are formed in comparable block copolymers. Nanoparticles formed in copolymers with PMMA blocks were more stable to agglomeration than when polystyrene was used. Electron microscopy revealed the morphology of the nanocomposites which confirmed that both block copolymers are vehicles for the formation of well-defined films containing nanoparticulate silver. However, AgNP formation shows some significant differences from previous reports of gold NP containing materials formed under similar conditions.  相似文献

Samarium doped zinc-magnesium-phosphate glasses having composition (60 – x)P2O5–10MgO–30ZnO–xSm2O3 where x = 0.1, 0.3, 0.6, 1.0 mol % were prepared by melt quenching technique. Archimedes method was used to measure their densitieswhich are lying in the range 2.65–2.91 g/cm3. On the basis of the increasing trend in the density while increasing the content of Sm2O3 it can be concluded that the bridging oxygen is converted to non-bridging oxygen The UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy was carried on in the wavelength range 310–900 nm where the absorption spectra consist of six absorption peaks corresponding to the transitions from the ground state 6H5/2 to various excited energy levels. The optical band gaps are calculated to be 3.93–4.41 eV, 3.31–3.73 eV and 0.27–0.29 eV for direct band gap, indirect band gap and Urbach energy, respectively. The physical parameters like oxygen packing density, refractive index, molar refractivity, metallization, and electronic polarizability are also studied. The Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) technique is used to evaluate the thermal stability.  相似文献

A novel series of copolymeric acrylamide/potassium acrylate superabsorbents, blended with poly(vinyl alcohol), have been synthesized by using N, N′‐methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker and potassium persulphate (K2S2O8) as an initiator. Swelling behavior of these hydrogels in water was investigated; and on the basis of swelling properties, the diffusional behavior of water into these hydrogel systems was analyzed. It was observed that with the increase of amount of poly(vinyl alcohol) or crosslinking, the swelling of the hydrogels decreased. The development of flexible parametric classes of probability models in Bayesian analysis is a very popular approach. This study is designed for heterogeneous population for a two-component mixture of the Laplace probability distribution. When a process initially starts, the researcher expects that the failure components will be very high but after some improvement/inspection it is assumed that the failure components will decrease sufficiently. That is why in such situation the Laplace model is more suitable as compared to the normal distribution due to its fatter tails behaviour. We considered the derivation of the posterior distribution for censored data assuming different conjugate informative priors. Various kinds of loss functions are used to derive these Bayes estimators and their posterior risks. A method of elicitation of hyperparameter is discussed based on a prior predictive approach. The results are also compared with the non-informative priors. To examine the performance of these estimators we have evaluated their properties for different sample sizes, censoring rates and proportions of the component of the mixture through the simulation study. To highlight the practical significance we have included an illustrative application example based on real-life mixture data.  相似文献
