Polymers based upon hydroquinone–quinone redox system were prepared by the addition of hydroquinone and methylhydroquinone to parachloromethylstyrene. Others were obtained by vinylation of halogenated compounds and polymerization of monomers containing the redox system. In the last case, composition and structure of macromolecules are known with increased certainty and so, they are readily characterized. For the first time, preparation and polymerization of monomers are realized with good yields. By using these macromolecules to remove oxygen from water, it was established that redoxite properties of Electron Transfer Polymers (ETP) have been closely related to the number of redox functions on the polymer matrix. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A method of supplying CO2 to photosynthetic algal cultures was developed based on mass transfer measurements of CO2 through microporous hydrophobic hollow fibres for various gas and liquid flow rates. A mathematical model was derived to describe the mass transfer. The designed hollow fibre module led to overall mass transfer coefficient values ranging from 1·26 × 10−3 to 2·64 × 10−3 cm s−1. Higher efficiencies of the CO2 transmission were obtained at high liquid flow rates and low gas flow rates. The use of microporous hydrophobic hollow fibres enabled an enhancement of the carbon dioxide transfer per area of membrane surface by a factor of 10, in comparison to operation with silicone tubing. The hollow fibre module was operated in an external bypass to a 1 dm3 microalgae culture vessel. In this system the algal growth pattern was similar to that obtained with a control culture where CO2 was bubbled. However, the dissolved oxygen concentration was always lower in the vessel in which CO2 was supplied by the module. © 1998 SCI.  相似文献

Dietary intake assessment can be considered as a two-step process consisting of collecting and evaluating food composition data, and combining these data with food consumption data. The purpose of this study was to develop databases of nutrient and contaminant concentrations in organic and conventional vegetables and potatoes based on internationally available secondary data. Databases, as described here, are important in (1) comparing the composition of similar foods (organic versus conventional) and (2) assessing probabilistically the combined intake of nutrients and contaminants when nutritional and toxicological dimensions of food consumption are being studied simultaneously.  相似文献

Consumption and exploitation of crocodiles have been rampant for their exotic, nutritive and medicinal attributes. These depredations are alarming and although they have continued to be monitored by wildlife and conservation agencies, unlawful trading of crocodiles shows an increasing trend worldwide. Recently, conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) assays for crocodile have been documented but they are only suitable for identification and cannot quantify adulterations. We described here a quantitative duplex real-time PCR assay with probes to quantify contributions from Crocodylus porosus materials simultaneously. A very short amplicon size of 127bp was used because longer targets could have been broken down in samples, bringing considerable uncertainty in molecular analysis. We have validated a TaqMan probe-based duplex real-time PCR (qPCR) assay for the detection of 0.004 ng DNA in pure state and 0.1% target meat in model chicken meatball. False negative detection was eliminated through an endogenous control (141-bp site of eukaryotic 18S rRNA). Analysis of 12 model chicken meatballs adulterated with C. porosus reflected 96.3?120.2% target recovery at 0.1?10% adulterations. A validation test of 21 commercial food and traditional medicine (TM) crocodile-based products showed 100% effectiveness. Short amplicon sizes, alternative complementary target, exceptional stability and superior sensitivity suggested the assay could be used for the identification and quantitative determination of C. porosus in any food or TM samples even under degraded conditions.  相似文献

Lactobacillus fermentum ACA-DC 179, Lactobacillus plantarum ACA-DC 287 and Streptococcus macedonicus ACA-DC 198 were studied for their probiotic potential. Firstly, strains were screened for antimicrobial activity towards a broad range of target strains, including lactic acid bacteria, food spoilage and pathogenic bacteria. L. fermentum ACA-DC 179 was active against five streptococci, including the two pathogenic strains Streptococcus oralis LMG 14532T and Streptococcus pneumoniae LMG 14545T. S. macedonicus ACA-DC 198 was active against the majority of the strains tested, including not only lactic acid bacteria but also many food spoilage or pathogenic species. The three potential probiotic strains were found to survive variably at pH 2.5 and were unaffected by bile salts. Only S. macedonicus ACA-DC 198 exhibited bile salt hydrolase activity, while none of the strains was haemolytic. Moreover, strains exhibited variable susceptibility towards commonly used antibiotics. L. plantarum ACA-DC 287 and S. macedonicus ACA-DC 198 induced the secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-12, IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha by human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Also elevated levels of the anti-inflammatory IL-10 were observed with L. fermentum ACA-DC 179. This strain consequently was found to significantly reduce colitis in a TNBS-induced colitis mouse model. Furthermore, L. fermentum ACA-DC 179 was successfully applied in an experimental Salmonella-infection mouse model. To conclude, strain L. fermentum ACA-DC 179 possesses desirable probiotic properties, such as antimicrobial activity and immunomodulation in vitro, which were confirmed in vivo by the use of animal models.  相似文献

The structure of (GeTe4)1?x(AgI)x (x = 0.15 and 0.25) glasses has been investigated by X‐ray and neutron diffraction as well as extended X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS) and Raman spectroscopy. Large‐scale structural models have been obtained by fitting simultaneously the experimental datasets in the framework of the reverse Monte Carlo simulation technique (RMC). Short‐range order parameters have been calculated and compared with that of GeTe4. Doping with AgI affects the structure of the host GeTe4 matrix in two ways. First, while Te is essentially twofold coordinated in GeTe4, its coordination number is as high as ~2.9 ± 0.3 for x = 0.25. The change is mainly due to the increased fraction of Te–Te bonds. Second, Ge atoms remain fourfold coordinated but the tetrahedral symmetry is distorted due to the elongation of some Ge–Te bonds. The incorporation of AgI in the GeTe4‐based host covalent matrix and the Te coordination increase explains the enhanced thermal stability of (GeTe4)1?x(AgI)x in the supercooled liquid‐state hindering the crystallization of Te found in case of GeTe4 glass.  相似文献

The numerous studies conducted so far on the issue of patulin contamination have focused mainly on aspects like growth of Penicillium expansum, patulin production under different conditions and the influence of processing on the patulin concentration in apple juice. The purpose of the present study was to collect the necessary information and to develop a quantitative risk assessment model (QRAM) in order to evaluate different strategies to reduce patulin contamination. For apple juice (AJ) production 3 types of apples are considered, namely fresh apples, apples stored under cold air (short term storage) and apples stored under controlled atmosphere (CA) (long term storage). The QRAM described the complete chain from the picking of apples until storage of produced AJ. In comparison to a traditional chemical analysis, the QRAM was found accurate in predicting the concentration of patulin in cloudy and clear AJs commercialised in Belgium. Simulation of the model demonstrated that the use of apples stored under CA contributes to a large extent to the patulin contamination of AJ. Since apples stored in CA are used from more or less January onwards, AJ with high patulin concentration can be produced from January onwards. It would be useful in this respect to take this into account when sampling plans are made by apple juice producers in the framework of their HACCP-system and by governments and control agencies when monitoring programmes are elaborated. The duration of deck storage between the delivery at the apple juice producer (AJP) and the processing of the apples had a large influence on the patulin concentration, and this effect was more pronounced for apples stored under controlled atmosphere compared to apples stored under cold air. The duration of the deck storage should therefore be considered as a Critical Control Point (CCP) within HACCP-systems. Also the application of a sorting step was evaluated to be efficient to reduce the high patulin concentration in AJ. Therefore, a combination of the 2 most effective measures (namely sorting out apples with an infection lesion larger than 10 cm(2) and a reduction of the volume of CA apples) was tested and resulted in a reduction to levels below 25 μg/kg in 99.7 to 99.9% of the clear and cloudy apple juices, respectively. It is therefore advisable to include a sorting step prior to processing, when apples stored in CA are used.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Acrylamide is a probable human carcinogen produced during food preparation, including frying of potato products. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of seasonal variation on tuber composition and its acrylamide generation potential. RESULTS: The chemical composition of potato varieties used respectively for French fry (Bintje and Ramos) and crisp (Lady Rosetta and Saturna) production was studied throughout a storage period of 9 months during two growing seasons (2003 and 2004), in addition to their acrylamide generation potential during preparation of French fries. A significant impact of variable climatological conditions on the reducing sugar, dry matter, total free amino acid and free asparagine contents of tubers was observed. Exceptionally warm summers gave rise to a lower reducing sugar content (expressed on a dry matter basis) and thus a lower susceptibility to acrylamide generation during frying. CONCLUSION: It cannot be excluded that potato growers and the potato‐processing industry are confronted with some harvests that are more prone to acrylamide generation than others owing to climatological variability, thus confirming the importance of a multifactorial approach to mitigate acrylamide generation in potato products.
