In the present work, the metallocene‐based polyethylene–octene elastomer (POE) was chemically modified by solution grafting of acrylic acid in presence of benzoyl peroxide. The relative proportions of graft and gel formation were optimized through %weight gain, Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The gel formation in the POE matrix was found to be the prime competitor. The effect of grafting at its maximum level on various physicomechanical properties was thoroughly investigated, using X‐ray diffraction analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, mechanical, dynamic mechanical, and thermogravimetric analysis. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Intravascular adhesion of leucocytes plays a role in the pathogenesis of acute and chronic vascular disease. Regular aerobic exercise seems to protect against vascular disease. Since leucocyte adhesion is mediated by integrins, we tested the hypothesis that surface expression of the integrin adhesive receptors LFA-1 (cd11a/cd18), MAC-1 (cd11b/cd18), gp 150/95 (cd11c/cd18), and VLA-4 (cd29/cd49) is decreased by moderate endurance exercise. Surface expression of integrins was measured by FACS analysis in 19 healthy subjects (16 males, 3 females, 36.6 +/- 8.7 years, 177.1 +/- 7.5 cm, 70.3 +/- 8.1 kg) before and after submaximal exercise (3 h run) using monoclonal antibodies against cd11a, cd11b, cd11c, cd18, cd29 and cd49. In addition, we compared resting integrin expression in this group with a group of sedentary subjects (19 males, 6 females, 29.3 +/- 5.3 years). White blood cell count increased from 5300 ml(-1) to 9740 ml(-1) during exercise (P < 0.001). Nevertheless, the expression (indicated by the mean log fluorescence) of cd11a (94 +/- 24 vs. 78 +/- 14) and cd18 (128 +/- 31 vs. 102 +/- 21) on lymphocytes and of cd11a (104 +/- 25 vs. 85 +/- 16), cd11c (497 +/- 171 vs. 408 +/- 126) cd29 (109 +/- 16 vs. 89 +/- 16), cd49 (69 +/- 8 vs. 54 +/- 11) on monocytes was decreased after exercise (all P < 0.05). In contrast, integrin expression on granulocytes was not altered by exercise. Comparison of exercising and sedentary subjects showed a significantly decreased expression of integrins in exercising subjects. Our results demonstrate that moderate exercise leads to decreased expression of integrin receptors on leucocytes. This decreased expression of adhesion molecules may result in decreased adhesion and infiltration of leucocytes into the vessel wall. This phenomenon may play a role in the beneficial effect of moderate exercise in prevention of acute and chronic vascular disease.  相似文献

In this study, the synthesis of ultra‐fine grade antimony trioxide (Sb2 O3) using plant extract for the first time is reported. Antimony chloride was used as a starting material and Dioscorea alata tuber extract was used as a reducing and capping agent. The synthesised nanoparticles were characterised by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE‐SEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. XRD analysis indicates the formation of pure Sb2 O3 nanoparticles. This paper presents the theory and performance of a differential induction machine, which is a special type of induction machine having two shafts projected from the two ends of a single stator. Application of a differential load on the two shafts cause them to run at different speed as a motor, which permits true differential movement and thus can meet the requirements of a differential drive in an electric vehicle. The machine is also capable of regeneration in the differential mode. This paper presents the construction of the above machine and performance of the same based on experimental results from a laboratory prototype. The equivalent circuit of the motor has been presented and verified experimentally.  相似文献

Graphene-reinforced aluminum (Gr-Al) matrix nanocomposites (NCs) have attracted strong interest from both research and industry in high-performance weight-sensitive applications. Due to the vastly different bonding characteristics of the Al matrix (metallic) and graphene (in-plane covalent?+?inter-plane van der Waals), the graphene phase has a general tendency to agglomerate and phase separate in the metal matrix, which is detrimental for the mechanical and chemical properties of the composite. Thus, synthesis of Gr-Al NCs is extremely challenging. This review summarizes the different methods available to synthesize Gr-Al NCs and the resulting properties achieved in these NCs. Understanding the effect of processing parameters on the realized properties opens up the possibility of tailoring the synthesis methods to achieve the desired properties for a given application.  相似文献

Modeling of electrokinetic flows is crucial to understand numerous phenomena associated with electrochemistry, biophysics, and colloidal science. Here, we incorporate the modified Gaussian renormalized fluctuation theory into transport equations for electrolyte solutions to study the ion-correlation-induced inversion of electrokinetic flows, also known as charge inversion. We are able to capture the non-monotonic dependence of inverted streaming current and reversed electrophoretic mobility on salt concentration. By analyzing the double-layer structure, we elucidate that this non-monotonicity is a consequence of the competition between spatially varying ion correlations and the translational entropy of the ions. We find that for practical values of surface charge densities, the excluded volume effect does not play any significant role. In a significant improvement over existing theories, our theoretical predictions are in quantitative agreement with experimental measurements for charge inversion in trivalent salts.  相似文献

Nano ZnO particles were synthesized by treating zinc oxalate with glycol and amines. The treated nano particles were in-situ grafted on methacrylic acid/butyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate via solution polymerization technique to prevent aggregation in the coating. The characterizations of grafted and treated nano ZnO particles were performed by transmission electron microscopy, atomic force spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and particle size analysis. The outcome of this surface modification and varying concentrations of nano ZnO has helped in establishing it as an antibacterial additive in hygienic coating.  相似文献

Over the last decade, driver distractions, such as cell phone use and texting, have become a significant contributor to roadway crashes. Some states now have legislation that severely restricts or bans driver activities deemed distracting. However, many policies and engineered countermeasures are based on self-reported crash data. This raises the issue of potential bias and when not controlled for in analysis supporting policy decisions, can lead to poor allocation of public resources. This study explores the impact of self-reporting driver distraction on the likelihood estimates of the injury severity category of vehicle crashes. Using a two-step correction technique, the presence of bias is tested, when present corrected, and its impact is interpreted. The findings show that self-reporting bias is present in the national database, a database often used to help evaluate policy and engineering options, self-reporting bias understates the true effect of driver distraction on injury severity, and it is not uniform across injury categories. As a result, the forecast of potential savings of countermeasure policies or in-vehicle devices will be distorted leading to inefficient allocation of public resources.  相似文献

With a view to find useful building blocks (short structural motifs) for reconstruction of 3D structure of proteins, we propose a modified neural gas learning algorithm that we call structural neural gas (SNG) algorithm. The SNG is applied on a benchmark protein data set and its performance is compared with a well known algorithm from the literature (two stage clustering algorithm (TSCA)). The SNG algorithm is found to generate better building blocks compared to TSCA. We have also compared the performance of SNG algorithm with that of a recently reported Incremental Structural Mountain Clustering Method (ISMCM). In general, ISMCM is found to use more building blocks to yield results comparable to that of SNG algorithm. We demonstrate the superiority of SNG over TSCA both in terms of local-fit and global-fit errors using fragments of length five, six, and seven. We also use a graphical means for comparison of the performance of the two algorithms.  相似文献
