The extent to which turbulent structure is affected by bed-load transport is investigated experimentally using a nonporous fixed planar bed comprising mixed-sized granular sediment with a d50 of 1.95?mm. Three different sizes of sediment (d50 = 0.77, 1.99, and 3.96?mm) were fed into the flow at two different rates (0.003 and 0.006?kg/m/s), and subsequently transported as bed load. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to determine the turbulence characteristics over the fixed bed during clear water and sediment feed cases. Mean longitudinal flow velocities at any given depth were lower than their clear water counterparts for all but one of the mobile sediment cases. The exception was with the transport of fine grains at the higher feed rate. In this case, longitudinal mean flow velocities increased compared to the clear water condition. The coarse grains tended to augment bed roughness, but fine grains saturated the troughs and interstices in the bed topography, effectively causing the influence of bed irregularities to be smoothed. The PIV technique permitted examination of both temporal and spatial fluctuations in flow variables: therefore many results are presented in terms of double-averaged quantities (in temporal and spatial domains). In particular, the form-induced stress, which arises from spatially averaging the Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equations and is analogous to the Reynolds turbulent stress, contributed between 15 and 35% of the total measured shear stress in the roughness layer. Flow around protrusive roughness elements produced a significant proportion of the turbulent kinetic energy shear production, suggesting that this process is highly intermittent near rough beds. 相似文献

The rate coefficients of the ion-molecule reactions between H3O+, NO+, O2+, and phosphine were determined using a selected ion flow tube. Using these data, the selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) method was applied to the real-time measurement of phosphine in nitrogen without sample preparation down to concentrations in the mid parts per trillion range. This is the first reported measurement using SIFT-MS in the parts per trillion range. Linear dependencies on concentration were found from 190 ppt to the ppm range, and the limit of detection for a 10-s scan was 190 ppt (0.27 pg/mL). 相似文献

New Zealand is a leader in the global dairy industry. Milk powder is the principal export product, but there is also a prominent cheese manufacturing industry, catering more for the domestic market. The Selected Ion Flow Tube-Mass Spectrometric (SIFT-MS) technique was used to compare 4 New Zealand cheeses marketed as "parmesan" with 4 Italian Parmigiano Reggiano and Grana Padano cheeses. The cheese headspace was analyzed in real time without any sample preconcentration. Total of 38 volatile compounds in the cheese headspace were monitored with headspace concentrations varying between single digit parts per billion (ppb) to tens of parts per million (ppm). When the results were subjected to multivariate statistical analysis, a clear discrimination was found between the New Zealand "parmesan" and Italian cheeses based solely on the measured concentrations of these volatile compounds. If the volatile compounds used in the analyses were restricted to known odor-active compounds in Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, the ability to discriminate between the cheeses was maintained. The analyses also showed that it was possible to clearly differentiate between the different processing plants in individual countries. Important discriminatory volatiles in the samples tested were butanoic acid and phenylacetaldehyde for discriminating between Italian cheeses and ethyl butyrate, acetaldehyde and methylbutanals between New Zealand cheeses. We conclude that the New Zealand "parmesans" do not provide a good representation of the aroma of Italian "parmesans." PRACTICAL APPLICATION: SIFT-MS has been shown to clearly differentiate both country of origin and the manufacturer of "parmesan" cheeses made in Italy and New Zealand based on differences in volatile organic compounds. We investigate the turbulent structure of shallow open channel flows where the flow depth is too small (compared with the roughness height) to form a logarithmic layer but large enough to develop an outer layer where the flow is not directly influenced by the roughness elements. Since the log layer is not present, the displacement height d, which defines the position of the zero plane, and the shear velocity u* cannot be found by fitting the velocity data to the log law. However, these parameters are still very important because they are used for scaling flow statistics for the outer and roughness layers. In this paper we propose an alternative procedure for evaluating d in laboratory conditions, where d is found from additional experiments with the fully developed log layer. We also point out the appropriate procedure for evaluating the shear velocity u* for flows with low submergence. These procedures are applied to our own laboratory flume experiments with uniform sphere roughness, where velocities were measured using Particle Image Velocimetry. Results were interpreted within the framework of the double-averaged Navier–Stokes equations and include mean velocities, turbulence intensities, Reynolds stresses, and form-induced normal and shear stresses. The data collapse well and show that in flows without a developed log layer the structure of turbulence in the outer layer remains similar to that of flows with a log layer. This means that even though the roughness layer in the experiments reported herein was sufficiently high to prevent the development of the log layer, influence of the bed roughness did not spread further up into the outer layer. The design of a straight benthic flow-through flume for in situ studies of cohesive sediment dynamics is described including the flume structure and probes installed for routine measurements of suspended sediments and flow velocity. The flume was calibrated for two roughness types covering the range of possible cohesive bed roughnesses. The calibration included a set of three-dimensional velocity measurements using acoustic Doppler velocimeter. These measurements were used to develop calibration relationships between the bed shear stress (which is difficult to measure directly in routine deployments) and the flume centerline flow velocity, which is routinely measured. An example of a successful deployment of the flume is presented. The limitations and potential for further improvements are also briefly discussed. 相似文献

The stability of randomly deposited sediment beds is examined using a discrete particle model in which individual grains are represented by spheres. The results indicate that the threshold shear stress for flat beds consisting of cohesionless uniformly sized grains cannot be adequately described by a single-valued parameter; rather, it is best represented by a distribution of values. Physically, this result stems from the localized heterogeneity in the arrangement of surface grains. For uniformly sized beds, geometric similarity exists such that the critical entrainment shear stress distributions scale directly with grain size. A Shields parameter of 0.06 is commonly used to define “threshold conditions,” and it was found that this corresponds to a point on the distributions where approximately 1.4% by weight of the surface is mobile. Furthermore the analysis includes a comparison of the contributions of sheltering to variation in critical entrainment shear stress. It was found that remote sheltering, induced by prominent upstream grains, has a significant effect in increasing the apparent critical entrainment shear stress of exposed surface grains. 相似文献
