The goal of this paper is to discuss the spatial averaging concept in environmental hydraulics and develop it further by considering transport equations for fluid momentum, passive substances, and suspended sediments. The averaging theorems, the double-averaged (in time and in space) fluid momentum equation, and advection-diffusion equations for a passive substance and suspended sediments are introduced and their limitations and applications for modeling rough-bed flows, experimental design, and data interpretation are discussed. The suggested equations differ from those considered in terrestrial canopy aerodynamics and porous media hydrodynamics by accounting for roughness mobility, change in roughness density in space and time, and particle settling effects for the case of suspended sediments. We show that the form of the double-averaged equations may depend on the type of decomposition of flow variables and that this difference may have important implications for modeling. We also show that the suggested methodology offers better definitions for hydraulic characteristics, variables, and parameters such as flow uniformity, flow two dimensionality, and bed shear stress.  相似文献

A fast, efficient, real-time method for the quantitative analysis of the peroxide explosive, TATP, is described. The method utilizes rapid ion-molecule reactions of chemical reagent ions with the vapor above solid TATP. The reactions of three reagent ions (H3O+, O2+, NO+) were examined. Although all three ions exhibited a near-collision-rate reaction with TATP, only NO+ showed product ions that provide unequivocal evidence for a TATP-based explosive. The limit of detection of TATP in the gas phase is 10 ppb (4 x 10(-10) mol L(-1)).  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: We assessed the abilities of two methods to measure ejection fraction (EF)-radionuclide ventriculography (RVG) and contrast left ventriculography (Cath-EFa) to predict cardiovascular events. BACKGROUND: Both RVG and Cath-EFa are commonly used methods to measure left ventricular performance and assess prognosis. Their comparative abilities to predict clinical events have not been reported. METHODS: Both RVG EF and Cath-EFa were measured within 16 days of myocardial infarction (MI) in 688 patients. The results were divided into terciles. Prognosis by terciles was assessed for each technique. A multivariate analysis was performed to determine which EF measurement was a better predictor of prognosis. RESULTS: Average RVG-EF was 32%+/-7, while Cath-EFa was 42%+/-10. Both RVG and Cath-EFa were poorly correlated (R=0.42). Event rate declined across terciles with increasing EF for both techniques (events in lowest to highest tercile of Cath-EFa 40.7%, 25.9%, 11.6%, p < 0.001; and RVG-EF 39.9%, 26.1%, 15.6%, p < 0.001). There was concordance of terciles in 303 of 688 patients (44%). When patients in the highest RVG terciles were in the highest Cath-EFa tercile, the event rate was 7%. However, when patients in the highest RVG terciles were in the lowest Cath-EFa tercile, the event rate was 19%. Both Cath-EFa (p < 0.001) and RVG-EF (p < 0.001) were independent predictors of cardiovascular events. CONCLUSIONS: Ejection fraction measured by RVG or during catheterization is a valuable tool in the risk stratification of postinfarct patients. When disagreement is present between clinical impression and measurement by either method, the use of an alternative measurement is warranted and complementary.  相似文献

This paper investigates empowerment within manufacturing production. Empowerment is multidimensional. Understanding the implications of operationalising empowerment requires an appreciation of all its dimensions. These dimensions are captured in Empowerment Profiles, which are incorporated within a conceptual framework. A sample of the Empowerment Profiles is validated using case studies. The Empowerment Profiles appear to have potential as a tool to assist in preparing to implement empowered work strategies, focusing attention on issues to be considered.  相似文献

Some of the most interesting objects in the solar system are those bodies that have significant atmospheres. The discovery that Titan, Saturn's largest satellite, has a substantial nitrogen-based atmosphere makes it a prime extraterrestrial object of interest. The advent of the Cassini orbiter spacecraft program that is able to observe and sample Titan's ionosphere adds greatly to this interest. We report here a summary of some of the efforts that have been made in the laboratory to understand the processes responsible for chemical processing of the primary ions formed in Titan's ionosphere, into the ions observed by in situ sampling. The presence of significant hydrocarbons and the colder temperatures of Titan's ionosphere lead to a much greater complexity in the ion chemistry of Titan than is apparent in the ion chemistry of Earth. A review of all the ion-molecule chemistry investigated in laboratory studies relevant to Titan is included as a table. The complexity of some of the hydrocarbon ion structures formed in just three reactive ion-molecule sequences from the primary ions has required a new experimental methodology which is discussed.  相似文献

We report a simulation study of virtual team meetings. Participants role-played companies collaborating on a design problem while supported by a range of IT tools, such as videoconferencing and shared applications. Meetings were analysed to investigate how sharing computing facilities, operating the technology, and company status, influenced communications. Significantly more talk occurred in larger teams where participants shared I.T. facilities BUT this extra talk was restricted to talk within a single location. No extra talk was shared across the virtual team via the communications link. Where facilities were shared, technology controllers dominated cross-site talk. To encourage free communication across distributed virtual teams we recommend providing each participant with their own communications facility even if this is technologically less advanced than if technology support were shared.  相似文献

The paper briefly outlines the double-averaging methodology for studying environmental rough-bed flows. It focuses on the applications of this methodology in environmental hydraulics by providing several examples illustrating advantages of this methodology over conventional approaches. Examples include: (1) identification of specific flow layers and flow types; (2) vertical distribution of the double-averaged velocity between the roughness tops and troughs; (3) vertical distribution of momentum fluxes and sinks for typical roughness types due to turbulence, mean flow heterogeneity, secondary currents, form drag, and viscous drag; (4) estimates of form-induced (dispersive) stresses and evaluation of their structure using quadrant analysis; and (5) closure development for mass-transfer-uptake processes for stream periphyton. These examples illustrate the advantages of the double-averaging methodology over conventional approaches as well as highlight its potential for studying flows over very rough beds, highly mobile beds, permeable beds, and surface–subsurface exchanges of mass, heat, and momentum. This methodology may also significantly improve research tools for studying a wide range of flow–biota interaction phenomena such as those related to aquatic plants, mussel communities, biofilms, and many others.  相似文献
