We study the degradation of the mechanical and corrosion properties of 17G1S steel in gas mains as a result of operation for
28–40 yr. We reveal the simultaneous decrease in its strength and hardness, on the one hand, and impact toughness and crack
resistance, on the other hand. The indicated parameters prove to be most sensitive to the in-service degradation of the metal.
The degradation of steel leads to the increase in the strain-hardening coefficient and the appearance of the yield plateau
in the tensile stress-strain diagram and causes the appearance of sensitivity to hydrogen embrittlement increasing in the
process of operation. We analyze the role of absorbed hydrogen affecting the mechanism of strain aging and responsible for
the appearance of defects. It is shown that the polarization resistance can be used not only for monitoring of the corrosion
state of gas pipelines but also for the prediction of changes in their mechanical properties in the process of operation.

The results are presented of the fabrication of strain-relaxed graded Si1 − x
Gex/Si(001) buffer layers with a maximum Ge fraction of about 0.25 that have a low density of threading dislocations (<106 cm−2) and low surface roughness. The buffer layers are grown by atmospheric-pressure hydride CVD. It is found that chemical mechanical polishing can reduce their surface roughness to a level comparable with that of the original Si(001) substrates. We have studied the micromechanism of corrosion fracture of heat-transfer plates of a heat exchanger. The operation of heat
exchangers under conditions of contamination of the plates with a sediment from water leads to their local corrosion under
the sediment. The conditions of operation of the heat exchangers being equal, heat-transfer plates made of AiSi316Ti steel
worked 2.36 times as long as those of AiSi304L steel. The corrosion fracture of plates under the sediment began from pitting
initiation near nonmetallic inclusions of a certain nature. Afterwards, these pittings built up into corrosion spots by the
mechanism of stress corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement.

The parameters of Bi12TiO20 crystals grown with bismuth oxide of different degrees of purity were measured by a holographic recording technique in an
external ac electric field and were compared with a crystal specially doped with chromium. Various crystal parameters such
as the diffusion length of the photoexcited carriers and the Debye screening length were determined. It was found that the
absorption spectrum of the material and the holographic recording efficiency were strongly influenced by light chromium doping
and by insufficient purity of the starting mixture.
