HRTEM observation of the monoclinic-to-tetragonal m-t) phase transition in nanocrystalline ZrO2

The orientation relations m(100) || t(001), m[001] || t[110]; m(011) || t(100), m[100] || t[001]; m(100) || t(110), m[001] || t[001]; m(013) || t(116), m[001] || t[001] (indices for the primitive tetragonal cell) have been found between the tetragonal (t) and monoclinic (m) domains during the electron irradiation-induced m-t phase transition observed in-situ with HREM within isolated zirconia nanoparticles. Geometric models of the m-t interfaces are proposed.     

Influence of an external electric field on the recovery of stabilized zirconium dioxide under helium ion bombardment

It is shown that the application of an external electric field during helium ion bombardment of yttrium-stabilized zirconium dioxide single crystals may have a substantial influence on the processes accompanying the radiation-stimulated recovery of yttrium-stabilized zirconium dioxide: its n-type conductivity and refractive index may vary, and metallic nanosize inclusions may appear in the yttrium-stabilized zirconium dioxide matrix. Effect of Nonmetallic Inclusions on the Mechanical Properties of Hydrogenated Steels

We have studied intermediate-alloy Ni-Cu-Mo-V steel of open-hearth and converter (more pure as to nonmetallic inclusions) melting. In the case of middle hydrogen concentrations (up to 5 cm³ per 100 g), the strength characteristics, plasticity, and fracture energy of transverse and vertical specimens of converter steel decrease less than those for open-hearth steel. For higher hydrogen concentrations, the characteristics of steel become very low and almost identical for both materials. Under loading, cracks are initiated on nonmetallic inclusions; in hydrogenated steel, they propagate along the shortest path from one inclusion to another, without involving significant volumes of the specimen in plastic deformation. We have established that nonmetallic inclusions accelerate crack initiation under conditions of corrosion in pipe steels in the course of operation of pipelines.__________Translated from Fizyko-Khimichna Mekhanika Materialiv, Vol. 40, No. 6, pp. 115–119, November–December, 2004.     

γ-X-ray-spectrometric investigation of plutonium and241Am content in the soil in regions where peaceful nuclear explosions were conducted

A brief exposition of the γ-x-ray spectrometric method and apparatus for analyzing the content of plutonium and²⁴¹Am in samples of soil and vegetation is presented. The results of an analysis of some samples from the regions where peaceful nuclear explosions were conducted in Yakutiya and Perm oblast' are presented. It is concluded that the γ-x-ray spectrometric method can be used to perform large-scale measurements in regions where peaceful nuclear explosions have been conducted, 2 figures, 3 tables, 8 references.
