Background

Ageing is associated with a significant reduction in skeletal muscle carnosine which has been linked with a reduction in the buffering capacity of muscle and in theory, may increase the rate of fatigue during exercise. Supplementing beta-alanine has been shown to significantly increase skeletal muscle carnosine. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to examine the effects of ninety days of beta-alanine supplementation on the physical working capacity at the fatigue threshold (PWCFT) in elderly men and women.

Methods

Using a double-blind placebo controlled design, twenty-six men (n = 9) and women (n = 17) (age ± SD = 72.8 ± 11.1 yrs) were randomly assigned to either beta-alanine (BA: 800 mg × 3 per day; n = 12; CarnoSyn?) or Placebo (PL; n = 14) group. Before (pre) and after (post) the supplementation period, participants performed a discontinuous cycle ergometry test to determine the PWCFT.

Results

Significant increases in PWCFT (28.6%) from pre- to post-supplementation were found for the BA treatment group (p < 0.05), but no change was observed with PL treatment. These findings suggest that ninety days of BA supplementation may increase physical working capacity by delaying the onset of neuromuscular fatigue in elderly men and women.

Conclusion

We suggest that BA supplementation, by improving intracellular pH control, improves muscle endurance in the elderly. This, we believe, could have importance in the prevention of falls, and the maintenance of health and independent living in elderly men and women.  相似文献

In general, fabrication of well-defined organic nanowires or nanobelts with controllable size and morphology is not as advanced as for their inorganic counterparts. Whereas inorganic nanowires are widely exploited in optoelectronic nanodevices, there remains considerable untapped potential in the one-dimensional (1D) organic materials. This Account describes our recent progress and discoveries in the field of 1D self-assembly of planar pi-conjugated molecules and their application in various nanodevices including the optical and electrical sensors. The Account is aimed at providing new insights into how to combine elements of molecular design and engineering with materials fabrication to achieve properties and functions that are desirable for nanoscale optoelectronic applications. The goal of our research program is to advance the knowledge and develop a deeper understanding in the frontier area of 1D organic nanomaterials, for which several basic questions will be addressed: (1) How can one control and optimize the molecular arrangement by modifying the molecular structure? (2) What processing factors affect self-assembly and the final morphology of the fabricated nanomaterials; how can these factors be controlled to achieve the desired 1D nanomaterials, for example, nanowires or nanobelts? (3) How do the optoelectronic properties (e.g., emission, exciton migration, and charge transport) of the assembled materials depend on the molecular arrangement and the intermolecular interactions? (4) How can the inherent optoelectronic properties of the nanomaterials be correlated with applications in sensing, switching, and other types of optoelectronic devices? The results presented demonstrate the feasibility of controlling the morphology and molecular organization of 1D organic nanomaterials. Two types of molecules have been employed to explore the 1D self-assembly and the application in optoelectronic sensing: one is perylene tetracarboxylic diimide (PTCDI, n-type) and the other is arylene ethynylene macrocycle (AEM, p-type). The materials described in this project are uniquely multifunctional, combining the properties of nanoporosity, efficient exciton migration and charge transport, and strong interfacial interaction with the guest (target) molecules. We see this combination as enabling a range of important technological applications that demand tightly coupled interaction between matter, photons, and charge. Such applications may include optical sensing, electrical sensing, and polarized emission. Particularly, the well-defined nanowires fabricated in this study represent unique systems for investigating the dimensional confinement of the optoelectronic properties of organic semiconductors, such as linearly polarized emission, dimensionally confined exciton migration, and optimal pi-electronic coupling (favorable for charge transport). Combination of these properties will make the 1D self-assembly ideal for many orientation-sensitive applications, such as polarized light-emitting diodes and flat panel displays.  相似文献

Prediction of radiative transport through translucent thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) can only be performed if the scattering and absorption coefficients and index of refraction of the TBC are known. To date, very limited information on these coefficients, which depend on both the coating composition and the microstructure, has been available for the very commonly utilized plasma-sprayed 8 wt% yttria-stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) TBCs. In this work, the scattering and absorption coefficients of freestanding plasma-sprayed 8YSZ coatings were determined from room-temperature normal-incidence directional-hemispherical reflectance and transmittance spectra over the wavelength range from 0.8 to 7.5 μm. Spectra were collected over a wide range of coating thickness from 60 to almost 900 μm. From the reflectance and transmittance spectra, the scattering and absorption coefficients as a function of wavelength were obtained by fitting the reflectance and transmittance values predicted by a four flux model to the experimentally measured values at all measured 8YSZ thicknesses. While the combined effects of absorption and scattering were shown in general to exhibit a nonexponential dependence of transmittance on specimen thickness, it was shown that for sufficiently high absorption and optical thickness, an exponential dependence becomes a good approximation. In addition, the implications of the wavelength dependence of the plasma-sprayed 8YSZ scattering and absorption coefficients on (1) obtaining accurate surface-temperature pyrometer measurements and on (2) applying mid-infrared reflectance to monitor TBC delamination are discussed.  相似文献

Cold-pressed seed flours from pumpkin, parsley, mullein, cardamom, and milk thistle were examined for total oil, fatty acid profile of the oil, total phenolic content (TPC), scavenging activities against peroxyl (ORAC), hydroxyl (HOSC) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) (RDSC) radicals, and antiproliferative capacity against HT-29 human colon cancer cells. The cold-pressed parsley seed flour contained a very high concentration of total oil—17.6 g/100 g flour—with primarily C18:1 fatty acid at 86.2 g/100 g fatty acids. All other flour oils had relatively high levels of saturated fats, ranging from 39.0 to 62.9 g/100 g fatty acids. The tested seed flours demonstrated significant TPC and free radical scavenging activities. Milk thistle seed flour had the highest TPC value of 25.2 mg gallic acid equivalent per g flour (GAE mg/g) followed by that of parsley seed flour at 8.1 GAE mg/g. Milk thistle seed-flour extract also had significantly higher antioxidant activities than all other extracts against all tested radicals. The milk thistle seed-flour extract had an ORAC value of 1131 μmol trolox equivalents (TE) per g flour (TE μmol/g), a HOSC value of 893 TE μmol/g, and an RDSC value of 61 TE μmol/g. Also, ORAC, HOSC, and TPC values were significantly correlated (P < 0.01) under the experimental conditions. The cold-pressed milk thistle seed flour inhibited the proliferation of HT-29 cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner. Results from this study suggest that these cold-pressed seed flours may serve as natural sources of antioxidants and may be used to improve human health.  相似文献

This article offers a fresh reading of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and of the Common Implementation Strategy guidance document number 8 on public participation (PP) aimed at identifying the conditions required for successful implementation. We propose that a central barrier to implementing Article 14 is that Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) problems are complex in character and that participation is a wicked process in practice. This article highlights some ambiguous interpretations of the WFD comparing and contrasting the ‘letter of the law’ and its ‘spirit’, based on a critical review of the nature of PP, who it concerns and when it takes place. First we articulate a complex system interpretation of IWRM in the context of the WFD. Second, we explain the difficulty to define blueprint for PP in IWRM. Finally, we present five interpretative challenging readings in order to highlight tensions between the ‘spirit’ and the ‘letter’ of the WFD.  相似文献

As analytical technologies in proteomics and metabolomics continue to mature, there is an increasing need to apply these to clinically relevant biologic samples. In this study, a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method that utilizes selected reaction monitoring was used to measure the absolute quantity of estrogens and estrogen metabolites and testosterone in 8-microm tissue sections obtained from a fresh frozen lymph node tumor infiltrated by metastatic breast carcinoma. Total (conjugated plus unconjugated) and unconjugated levels of these steroid hormones were measured using two cohorts, each containing five adjacent serial sections cut from this tumor. The results were highly reproducible across replicate samples, showing that typical histological tissue sections represent an important sample type for the measurement of these specific metabolites.  相似文献

We examine the diffraction properties of one- and two-dimensional binary-phase gratings encoded onto pixelated liquid crystal displays (LCDs). We find that the first-order diffracted intensity from these binary-phase patterns can reach 100% of the zero-order intensity when the period of the grating approaches the Nyquist limit of the LCD. Experimental results show excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. This is a surprising result that has a number of implications for the encoding of diffractive optical elements.  相似文献

采用纳米Fe3O4作为磁流体包埋、戊二醛和硫脲进行交联壳聚糖,制备磁性交联壳聚糖(TTG-MCTS)。红外光谱(FTIR)和X射线能谱(EDS)分析结果表明,壳聚糖改性后,吸附能力得到提高,铀(Ⅵ)成功地被吸附在TTG-MCTS上。系统研究了溶液pH值、铀(Ⅵ)初始浓度及振荡时间对吸附容量的影响,继而得到最佳工艺条件。吸附过程用Langmuir等温式拟合优于用Freundlich等温式,最大吸附容量为161.3 mg·g-1。较之拟一级动力学模型,拟二级动力学模型能更好地拟合实验数据。  相似文献
