Inclusive production of vector mesons in π+ p interactions at 250 GeV/c

We report on a study of ρ⁰, ρ⁺, ω, \(\bar K^{*0} (892)\) andK ^*0 (892) inclusive production in π⁺ p interactions at 250 GeV/c, for ρ⁺, \(\bar K^{*0} (892)\) for the first time in a π⁺ p experiment. The data are compared withK ⁺ p data in the same experiment, with results of other experiments and with quark-parton models. Interesting differences are found between ρ^+,0 and ω production.     

Inclusive\bar K^{0*} (892) andK 0*(892) production on silicon by 200 GeVK − andπ −

The production of the neutralK ^? (892) resonances by 200 GeVK ^? andπ ^? has been studied over the kinematic range 0.0<x _f<1.0 andp _t ² <5.0 GeV². Longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions are presented. In addition the decay angular distributions inK ^? fragmentation to \(\bar K^{0*} \) have been investigated.     

Low energy restrictions for a flipped left-right symmetric model

I consider some low energy restrictions for a “flipped” left-right symmetric model containing exotic fermions ofE ₆ and a right-handedW-boson, all with oddR-parity. The new interactions due toW _R-exchange have no significant impact on rare kaon decays, because theW _R does not couple tod,s,b quarks. On the other hand,W _R exchanges might induce rare processes like \(D - \bar D\) mixing, \(D^0 \to \mu \bar \mu ,D^0 \to \mu \bar e,\mu \to e\gamma ,\mu \to 3e\) , and μN→eN. It turns out that the strongest bound is obtained from \(D - \bar D\) mixing. With reasonable extra assumptions, it is found that the exotic right-handed W-boson is likely to be heavier than 500 to 1500 GeV.     

High dose iron implantation into silicon and metals

High dose implantations of Fe into metals and semiconductors have been performed with beam energies up to 1 MeV at the UNILAC-injector at GSI. Unusual high concentrations of 70 atomic % for Si and 20 atomic % for Cu have been obtained, with doses of 10¹⁸ Fe/cm² in the case of Si and several 10¹⁷ Fe/cm² in the case of Cu. For Si the thickness of the layers were determined by Rutherford backscattering to be 4500 Å. These results are consistent with calculations, which show that these high concentrations are due to the reduction of the sputter yield at the relative high particle energies. Samples have been characterized using several complementary methods (Mössbauer Spectroscopy (MS), Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS), Auger electron Spectroscopy (AES). Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD)).     

Fe2P2O7 and Fe2P4O12 studied between 5–800 K

Mössbauer spectra of triclinic Fe₂P₂O₇ indicate the existence of two crystallographic metal positions in the structure. In the paramagnetic region the two Mössbauer doublets are closely overlapping. The magnetic transition takes place at ≈ 21 K and the saturated fields are around 12 tesla for the two positions. In monoclinic Fe₂P₄O₁₂ the two octahedrally coordinated metal positions give quite different quadrupole splittings (1.5 and 3 mm/s at room temperature) and hyperfine field values (42 and 12.5 Tesla at 5 K). The transition temperature is at ≈ 18.5 K.     

Development and operation of a balloon-borne telescope for fir imaging, radiometry and spectrometry of the galactic cygnus region

We have designed and built a balloon-borne far-infrared 60 cm telescope equipped with He-cooled filters and a composite silicon bolometer with an NEP of 1.3·10^–14 W/Hz^1/2 for imaging, radiometry and spectroscopy of the Cygnus region at wavelengths up to 330 m. A test flight took place at the CNES balloon station at Aire/Adour, F, on May 8, 1989. The balloon stayed 4_1/2 h at the observation height of 39 km. Tests and results are discussed.

Extending an edge-coloring

When can a k-edge-coloring of a subgraph K of a graph G be extended to a k-edge-coloring of G? One necessary condition is that for all X ? E(G) - E(K), where μ_i(X) is the maximum cardinality of a subset of X whose union with the set of edges of K colored i is a matching. This condition is not sufficient in general, but is sufficient for graphs of very simple structure. We try to locate the border where sufficiency ends.     

Infinite-order phase transition in a classical spin system

For an exactly soluble classical spin model with long-range inhomogeneous coupling it is proved that in the absence of external magnetic field the free energy is aC function of the temperature at the critical point.
