We documented nine male homosexual consortships within three different male–male dyads in a free-ranging all-male group of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), at Minoo, Japan. A total of 63 male–male mounts were observed during these consortships. Male homosexual interactions shared most of the behavioral components that have been reported to characterize heterosexual and female homosexual consortships in this species. Convergent behavioral data, including analysis of male–male solicitations, mounting postures, body orientations, inter-mount activities, and third-party male intrusions supported the conclusion that male–male consortships are a sexual phenomenon. We discussed a series of proximate and ultimate hypotheses that purport to account for the occurrence of male homosexual behavior in all-male groups of primates, including humans. This first report of male homosexual interactions in an all-male group of Japanese macaques contributes to the growing database used to provide insights into the developmental processes, causal mechanisms, adaptive significance, and phylogenetic pathways of same-sex sexual behavior.  相似文献

From May 1977 to August 1982 50 patients who were 1.5 to 44 months old underwent anatomic correction of transposition of the great arteries (TGA) and closure of ventricular septal defect (VSD) at our institution. Thirty-nine patients underwent preliminary pulmonary arterial banding. Hospital mortality was 32%: four patients died as a result of technical problems, seven as a result of associated lesions, three of pulmonary hypertension, and two of left ventricular failure. Three other patients died after the first postoperative month (one of mediastinitis, one at reoperation for a residual VSD, and one of pulmonary hypertension). All 31 survivors are in excellent clinical condition and are in sinus rhythm after a mean follow-up period of 31 +/- 14 months. Twenty-five patients were reinvestigated by echocardiography (M mode and two-dimensional) and/or catheterization. Parameters of left ventricular contractility were within normal limits, but systolic aortic diameter was larger than normal (p less than .01). Seven patients had stenosis of the right ventricular outflow tract and five of these required reoperation. The two persistent problems with the anatomic correction of TGA associated with VSD are a relatively high operative mortality and secondary right outflow tract stenosis. However, use of this procedure results in better left ventricular function and fewer arrhythmias than does use of atrial repair techniques and also results in the use of the anatomically left ventricle as the systemic ventricle.  相似文献

Phase-derived parameters and time autocorrelation functions were used to analyze the behavior of murine B16 cells exposed to different amplitudes of electroporation pulses. Cells were observed using an off-axis digital holographic microscope equipped with a fast camera. Series of quantitative phase images of cells were reconstructed and further processed using MATLAB codes. Projected area, dry mass density, and entropy proved to be predictors for permeabilized cells that swell or collapse. Autocorrelation functions of phase fluctuations in different regions of the cell showed a good correlation with the local effectiveness of permeabilization.  相似文献

Although surgically created aortopulmonary (AP) shunts are uncommon in the adult congenital heart disease population, they are often used in patients with pulmonary atresia. For these patients, the shunt is a vital supply of pulmonary blood flow and thus obstruction of the shunt may lead to pulmonary hypoperfusion and hypoxia thereby increasing morbidity and mortality. This report describes a safe and effective method of stenting the conduit with the hemodynamic support of peripheral cardiopulmonary bypass (PCB). Prior to the procedure, a multimodality assessment of a stenosis in a kinked AP conduit using computed tomography, angiography, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), and pressure wire assessment (PWA) was utilized. While PCB, IVUS, and PWA have all been used to great effect in various clinical scenarios, the combined use of these techniques has not been previously been described in the setting of intervention in adult congenital heart disease. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

PurposeTo explore the changes in T2-weighted (T2w) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) magnetic resonance imaging -derived radiomic features of the gross tumor volume (GTV) from focal salvage high-dose-rate prostate brachytherapy (HDRB) and to correlate with clinical parameters.Materials and MethodsEligible patients included those with biopsy-confirmed local recurrence that correlated with MRI (T2w, ADC). Patients received 27 Gy in 2 fractions separated by 1 week to a quadrant consisting of the GTV. The MRI was repeated 1 year after HDRB. GTVs, planning target volumes, and normal prostate tissue control volumes were identified on the pre- and post-HDRB MRIs. Radiomic features from each GTV were extracted, and principle component analysis identified features with the highest variance.ResultsPre- and post-HDRB MRIs were obtained from 14 trial patients. Principle component analysis showed that 18 and 17 features contributed to 93% and 86% of the variance observed in the T2w and ADC data, respectively. Sixteen T2w features and 1 ADC GTV feature were different from the control volumes in the pre-HDRB images (p < 0.05). Ten T2w and 7 ADC GTV post-HDRB features were different from those of pre-HDRB (p < 0.05).ConclusionsExploratory analysis reveals several radiomic features in the T2w and ADC image GTVs that distinguish the GTV from healthy prostate tissue and change significantly after salvage HDRB.  相似文献

In this research work, silica nanoparticles and silica-gentamicin nanostructured solution were synthesized by using the microwave-assisted synthesis, in basic medium, using two silane precursors (tetraethylorthosilicate and octyltriethoxysilane) and the antibiotic (gentamicin sulfate). The prepared materials were characterized through Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, TGA analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to investigate the morphology and structure. Antimicrobial studies of the silica-gentamicin nanostructured solution versus silica nanoparticles were performed against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. FTIR spectra showed that the gentamicin has been loaded to the silica nanoparticles. AFM analysis showed that the morphology of the silica-gentamicin nanostructured solution has changed, and agglomerations of particles are present at the surface. Antimicrobial testing, performed using the diffusion method through spot inoculation, indicates that the silica-gentamicin nanostructured solution exhibited activity against the resistant strain. The obtained silica-gentamicin solution can be used as biochemical agent for the prevention and treatment of microorganisms which are deposited on different surfaces (e.g., glass, plastic, ceramic).  相似文献
