Thermal degradation behavior of polyamides having 2- and 4-hydroxycinnamic acid dimer components

Two new types of polyamides having anti head-to-tail hydroxycinnamic acid dimer component in the main chain were synthesized. Their thermal degradation behavior was investigated by TG-DSC analysis in comparison with those of their model compounds and the polyamides derived from anti head-to-head coumarin dimer. The key reactions in the thermal degradation were clarified to be lactonization and cyclic imide formation. The polyamide, derived from 4-hydroxycinnamic acid dimer and hexamethylenediamine, showed good heat stability. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Regioselective photoaddition of alcohols to 1,2,3-butatriene derivatives via photoinduced electron transfer

Photochemical polar addition of alcohols to 1,1-diaryl-1,2,3-butatriene derivatives in the presence of a catalytic amount of 9,10-dicyanoanthracene regioselectively afforded 1,1-diaryl-4-alkoxy-1,2-butadienes as addition products in good yields via photoinduced electron transfer.     

Optical characteristics of one-dimensional photonic crystals composed of high-aspect-ratio Si walls fabricated on V-grooved wafer

We demonstrate optical properties of one-dimensional photonic crystals (PC), which are fabricated using high-aspect-ratio etching on a V-grooved silicon wafer. The measured transmission spectrum has an obvious band gap; the suppression is over 30 dB. The quite small insertion loss of 1.9 dB is achieved by induced coupled plasma (ICP) cryogenic etching and direct coupling to the optical fiber aligned in the V-groove. We also successfully observed peaks originating from a localized cavity mode. Such a microcavity enables control of the light, which qualifies photonic crystal as a fundamental structure of optical functional devices. These results lead to achievement of integrated Si-based photonic circuits.     

Finding of Optimal Calcium Ion Probes for Fluorescence Lifetime Measurement

We have investigated the fluorescence lifetime properties of 8 calcium ion probes, calcium-green-1, calcium green-2, calcium green-5N, calcium orange, oregon green 488 BAPTA-6F, fluo-3, fluo-4, and fluo-5N. We found that the decay time of calcium green-5N varied more sensitively with calcium concentration than calcium green-1 which was known to be a highly sensitive probe. We have also found that the center of observable range of calcium concentration by fluorescence lifetime measurement is lower than that by fluorescence intensity measurement.     

Study of ion desorption induced by a resonant core-level excitation of condensed H2O using Auger electron photo-ion coincidence (AEPICO) spectroscopy combined with synchrotron radiation

Ion desorption induced by a resonant excitation of O 1s of condensed amorphous H₂O has been studied by total ion and total electron yield spectroscopy, nonderivative Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and Auger electron photo-ion coincidence (AEPICO) spectroscopy. The spectrum of total ion yield divided by total electron yield exhibits a characteristic threshold peak at hν = 533.4 eV, which is assigned to the 4a₁ ← O 1s resonant transition. The AES at the 4a₁ ← O 1s resonance is interpreted as being composed of the spectator-AES of the surface H₂O, and the normal-AES of the bulk H₂O, where the 4a₁ electron is delocalized before Auger transitions. H⁺ is found to be the only ion species in AEPICO spectra measured at the 4a₁ ← O 1s resonance and at the O 1s ionization (hν = 560 eV). The electron kinetic energy dependence of the AEPICO yield (AEPICO yield spectrum) at the 4a₁ ← O 1s resonance is found to be greatly different from that at the O 1s ionization. The peak positions of the AEPICO yield spectrum at the 4a₁ ← O 1s resonance are found to correspond to those of the spectator-AES of the surface H₂O, which is extracted from the AES at the 4a₁ ← O 1s resonance. Furthermore, the AEPICO yield is greatly enhanced at the 4a₁ ← O 1s resonance as compared with that at the O 1s ionization. On the basis of these results, a spectator-Auger-stimulated ion desorption mechanism and/or ultra-fast ion desorption mechanism are concluded to be responsible for the H⁺ desorption at the 4a₁ ← O 1s resonance. The enhancement of the H⁺ yield is ascribed to the O---H anti-bonding character of the 4a₁ orbital.     

Au(I)-catalyzed efficient synthesis of α-acyloxy-α′-silyl ketones from α-acyloxy-α-alkynylsilanes

The Au(I)-catalyzed novel conversion of α-acyloxy-α-alkynylsilanes to α-acyloxy-α′-silyl ketones is reported. Ph₃PAuOTf in dioxane in the presence of 1 equiv of H₂O efficiently catalyzed both the [3,3] sigmatropic rearrangement and allenic transformation of the resulting ester to give the α-acyloxy-α′-silyl ketones in a one-pot procedure.     

Novel synthesis of brefeldin a an application of the oxidative fragmentation of γ-hydroxyalkyl stannanes

Synthesis of Brefeldin A seco acid (13) involving new oxidative fragmentation was reported.     

Dynamic range of a thermoplastic photoconductor hologram

A thermoplastic photoconductor material is well-known as a hologram recording material. The dynamic ranges of a thermoplastic hologram are studied in two softening methods. One is the conventional heating method, and the other is the newly developed solvent vapor method. It is found that the solvent vapor method makes the dynamic range ten times as wide as the heating method, and in the solvent vapor method exposure time and charging voltage hardly affect the final diffraction efficiency.
