Effect of the Twisting Motion on the Nonunifornities of Transmyocardial Fiber Mechanics and Energy Demand A Theoretical Study

The contraction of the left ventricle (LV) is manifested by a distribution of strains and strain rates throughout the muscle thickness. Using a nested shell spheroidal model of the LV, which accounts for a fiber angle distribution from + 60°at the endocardium to ?60° at the epicardium, and the radial electrical activation pattern from the endocardium to the epicardium, it can be shown that endocardial layers undergo higher strains than the epicardial layers throughout the cardiac cycle, and higher length changes characterize the endocardial sarcomeres relative to the epicardial sarcomeres. However, the calculated nonuniformities in the sarcomeres' shortening are significantly moderated when the physiological twisting motion of the LV around the longitudinal axis is accounted for. Thus, the twisting motion of the heart is a basic mechanism by which the sarcomere function is maintained within its physiological range.     

The impacts of a GTL plant on Brazil's oil products supply and refinery expansion

This paper assesses the impacts of a GTL plant on the expansion of Brazil's oil refining segment. The GTL plant (50,000 bpd) was sized to start up operations in 2015, producing diesel and naphtha through the indirect route (FT-synthesis). This plant will consume the non-associated natural gas production from the recent discoveries at the Santos Basin (around 419 Bm³), and the associated gas production from the Campos Basin. Both basins are located in the Southeast of Brazil, the most populated, rich and industrialized region of the country. Two different criteria for refinery expansion were simulated in order to meet oil product demand scenarios. Findings show that depending on the refinery expansion criteria considered GTL will play a fundamental hole to meet the oil product demand forecast to Brazil in the next 10 years.     

Doped silicon and NIS junctions for bolometer applications

We discuss the performance, of a normal metal hot electron bolometer (NHEB) that we have measured at 0.3 K. We found that the noise equivalent power was limited by the amplifier noise. To improve the NHEB power response and to make it more robust and reliable we propose to substitute the normal metal with heavily doped silicon. The heavily doped silicon behaves like a metal with lower carrier concentration and has a smaller electron–phonon thermal coupling. We have fabricated superconductor-doped silicon-superconductor contacts (S-Sm-S) and we have used them as thermometers and coolers.     

A rubber-modified thermoplastic where the morphology produced by phase-separation induced by polymerization disappears at high conversions

An unexpected experimental finding is reported where the primary morphology developed during polymerization-induced phase separation in a rubber-modified thermoplastic practically disappears at high conversions. This process was evidenced by light scattering (LS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for a particular composition of solutions of polyisobutylene oligomers (PIB) in isobornylmethacrylate (IBoMA), during the free-radical polymerization of the monomer. The primary phase separation produced a dispersion of domains rich in PIB containing significant amounts of the monomer (IBoMA). Polymerization of the monomer in these domains occurred at high overall conversions producing the filling of dispersed domains with a PIBoMA-PIB blend that could not be distinguished from the matrix. Under these conditions the final material had the appearance of a homogeneous blend.     

Grouped Approach for the Design of H.264/AVC Motion Estimation Architectures

This letter presents a novel approach for organizing computational resources into groups within H.264/AVC motion estimation architectures, leading to reductions of up to 75% in the equivalent gate count with respect to state‐of‐the‐art designs.     

Chronic pain in the lives of older women

We investigated the effect of chlorpromazine (CPZ) in a murine model of T-cell-dependent liver injury caused by concanavalin A (ConA). CPZ (3 and 10 mg/kg) treatment 1 h before ConA injection prevented liver injury. CPZ (3, 10 mg/kg) administered 1 h after a ConA injection was also hepatoprotective, whereas cyclosporin (CsA, 100 mg/kg) was active only when given before ConA. Under either condition, CsA but not CPZ prevented concurrent increases in splenic ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity, a putative index of T-cell proliferation/differentiation. CPZ down-regulated tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and up-regulated IL-10 in mice that then received ConA, whereas delayed administration of CPZ had no effect. These results suggest that CPZ prevented liver injury without affecting the proliferation/differentiation of T-cells. The dissociation of hepatoprotection by CPZ from cytokine modulation indicates that this drug intervenes in the adherence of T-cells or the death of hepatocytes in the ConA-model.     

Solar assisted cooling with sorption systems: status of the research in Mexico and Latin America

Solar refrigeration projects both national and international with sorption and other refrigeration systems have been developed in Mexico and other Latin American countries in the last 15 years. A review of the main projects, both for solar cooling and refrigeration and the results obtained are presented in this paper. A methodology where 19 solar technologies for cooling were identified is also presented. Although solar cooling is still not an economically viable technology, the advances made and the experience gained in the projects described and the improved systems envisaged, will make solar refrigeration systems play an important role in the future.     

Photovoltaic characterization of amorphous hydrogenated and chlorinated silicon films

Hydrogenated and chlorinated silicon films were used to deposit Schottky barrier solar cells. Photovoltaic characterization, together with the results of electronic transport measurements, led to the conclusion that the presence of chlorine is detrimental to the properties of this kind of device.     

Evaluation and enhancement of COBRA-TF efficiency for LWR calculations

Detailed representations of the reactor core generate computational meshes with a high number of cells where the fluid dynamics equations must be solved. An exhaustive analysis of the CPU times needed by the thermal-hydraulic subchannel code COBRA-TF for different stages in the solution process has revealed that the solution of the linear system of pressure equations is the most time consuming process. To improve code efficiency two optimized matrix solvers, Super LU library and Krylov non-stationary iterative methods have been implemented in the code and their performance has been tested using a suite of five test cases. The results of performed comparative analyses have demonstrated that for large cases, the implementation of the Bi-Conjugate Gradient Stabilized (Bi-CGSTAB) Krylov method combined with the incomplete LU factorization with dual truncation strategy (ILUT) pre-conditioner reduced the time used by the code for the solution of the pressure matrix by a factor of 20. Both new solvers converge smoothly regardless of the nature of simulated cases and the mesh structures and improve the stability and accuracy of results compared to the classic Gauss–Seidel iterative method. The obtained results indicate that the direct inversion method is the best option for small cases.
