Land plants are constantly subjected to multiple unfavorable or even adverse environmental conditions. Among them, abiotic stresses (such as salt, drought, heat, cold, heavy metals, ozone, UV radiation, and nutrient deficiencies) have detrimental effects on plant growth and productivity and are increasingly important considering the direct or indirect effects of climate change. Plants respond in many ways to abiotic stresses, from gene expression to physiology, from plant architecture to primary, and secondary metabolism. These complex changes allow plants to tolerate and/or adapt to adverse conditions. The complexity of plant response can be further influenced by the duration and intensity of stress, the plant genotype, the combination of different stresses, the exposed tissue and cell type, and the developmental stage at which plants perceive the stress. It is therefore important to understand more about how plants perceive stress conditions and how they respond and adapt (both in natural and anthropogenic environments). These concepts were the basis of the Special Issue that International Journal of Molecular Sciences expressly addressed to the relationship between environmental stresses and plants and that resulted in the publication of 5 reviews and 38 original research articles. The large participation of several authors and the good number of contributions testifies to the considerable interest that the topic currently receives in the plant science community, especially in the light of the foreseeable climate changes. Here, we briefly summarize the contributions included in the Special Issue, both original articles categorized by stress type and reviews that discuss more comprehensive responses to various stresses.  相似文献

Arigatoni is a lightweight overlay network that deploys the Global Computing Paradigm over the Internet. Communication for over the behavioral units of the overlay is performed by a simple resource discovery protocol (RDP). Basic Global Computers Units (GC) can communicate by first registering to a brokering service and then by mutually asking and offering services.Colonies and communities are the main entities in the model. A colony is a simple virtual organization composed by exactly one leader and some set (possibly empty) of individuals. A community is a raw set of colonies and global computers (think it as a soup of colonies and global computer without a leader).We present an operational semantics via a labeled transition system, that describes the main operations necessary in the Arigatoni model to perform leader negotiation, joining/leaving a colony, linking two colonies and moving one GC from one colony to another. Our formalization results to be adequate w.r.t. the algorithm performing peer logging/delogging and colony aggregation.  相似文献

Philadelphia-negative chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) represent a group of hematological disorders that are traditionally considered as indistinct slow progressing conditions; still, a subset of cases shows a rapid evolution towards myelofibrotic bone marrow failure. Specific abnormalities in the megakaryocyte lineage seem to play a central role in this evolution, especially in the bone marrow fibrosis but also in the induction of myeloproliferation. In this review, we analyze the current knowledge of prognostic factors of MPNs related to their evolution to myelofibrotic bone marrow failure. Moreover, we focused the role of the megakaryocytic lineage in the various stages of MPNs, with updated examples of MPNs in vitro and in vivo models and new therapeutic implications.  相似文献

Metastasis is a leading cause of mortality and poor prognosis in colorectal cancer (CRC). Thus, the identification of new compounds targeting cell migration represents a major clinical challenge. Recent findings evidenced a central role for dysregulated Notch in CRC and a correlation between Notch overexpression and tumor metastasis. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been reported to cross-talk with Notch for its regulation. Therefore, restoring underexpressed miRNAs targeting Notch could represent an encouraging therapeutic approach against CRC. In this context, S-adenosyl-L-methionine (AdoMet), the universal biological methyl donor, being able to modulate the expression of oncogenic miRNAs could act as a potential antimetastatic agent. Here, we showed that AdoMet upregulated the onco-suppressor miRNAs-34a/-34c/-449a and inhibited HCT-116 and Caco-2 CRC cell migration. This effect was associated with reduced expression of migration-/EMT-related protein markers. We also found that, in colorectal and triple-negative breast cancer cells, AdoMet inhibited the expression of Notch gene, which, by luciferase assay, resulted the direct target of miRNAs-34a/-34c/-449a. Gain- and loss-of-function experiments with miRNAs mimics and inhibitors demonstrated that AdoMet exerted its inhibitory effects by upregulating miRNAs-34a/-34c/-449a. Overall, these data highlighted AdoMet as a novel Notch inhibitor and suggested that the antimetastatic effects of AdoMet involve the miRNA-mediated targeting of Notch signaling pathway.  相似文献

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an efficient renal replacement therapy for patients with end-stage renal disease. Even if it ensures an outcome equivalent to hemodialysis and a better quality of life, in the long-term, PD is associated with the development of peritoneal fibrosis and the consequents patient morbidity and PD technique failure. This unfavorable effect is mostly due to the bio-incompatibility of PD solution (mainly based on high glucose concentration). In the present review, we described the mechanisms and the signaling pathway that governs peritoneal fibrosis, epithelial to mesenchymal transition of mesothelial cells, and angiogenesis. Lastly, we summarize the present and future strategies for developing more biocompatible PD solutions.  相似文献

Over the latest few years, cross-layer design in wireless networks has drawn great attention from the research community. One of the main arguments in favor of such techniques is that the hop-count metric alone is not enough to capture the specificities of wireless links (e.g., interferences, collisions, fading). In this paper, we address a simple yet fundamental question: What are the real improvements that cross-layering can bring to routing performance when compared to the simple hop-count metric? In our experiments, we consider the backbone of a real wireless mesh network composed of 12 routers deployed in an office building. We focus on the stability of routes and their persistence. In spite of the nature of cross-layer metrics that take into account information from different layers, lets them be very reactive to changes, we observe that using these metrics, pairs of nodes tend to mainly use the same set of two or three routes between them.  相似文献

We analyze the behavior of a dense granular aggregate made by identical, elastic spheres, uni-axially compressed at constant pressure. Our goal is to predict the evolution of the effective moduli along the loading path when small perturbations are applied to stressed states. The analytical model is based upon the average strain theory. We show that the moduli in the anisotropic state normalized with the corresponding initial isotropic value, are captured by a so crude model. Numerical simulations support this result.  相似文献

We introduce a family of fourth-order two-step methods that preserve the energy function of canonical polynomial Hamiltonian systems. As is the case with linear mutistep and one-leg methods, a prerogative of the new formulae is that the associated nonlinear systems to be solved at each step of the integration procedure have the very same dimension of the underlying continuous problem.The key tools in the new methods are the line integral associated with a conservative vector field (such as the one defined by a Hamiltonian dynamical system) and its discretization obtained by the aid of a quadrature formula. Energy conservation is equivalent to the requirement that the quadrature is exact, which turns out to be always the case in the event that the Hamiltonian function is a polynomial and the degree of precision of the quadrature formula is high enough. The non-polynomial case is also discussed and a number of test problems are finally presented in order to compare the behavior of the new methods to the theoretical results.  相似文献

This paper introduces a framework that tackles the costs in area and energy consumed by methodologies like spatial or temporal redundancy with a different approach: given an algorithm, we find a transformation in which part of the computation involved is transformed into memory accesses. The precomputed data stored in memory can be protected then by applying traditional and well established ECC algorithms to provide fault tolerant hardware designs. At the same time, the transformation increases the performance of the system by reducing its execution time, which is then used by customized software-based fault tolerant techniques to protect the system without any degradation when compared to its original form. Application of this technique to key algorithms in a MP3 player, combined with a fault injection campaign, show that this approach increases fault tolerance up to 92%, without any performance degradation.  相似文献
