The compatibility of the polystyrene/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene grafted copolymer system

Summary The study of polystyrene (PS)/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) grafted copolymer/cyclohexanone or methylene chloride system compatibility both in concentrated solutions and solid state has been carried out by phase separation, viscosimetrical measurements and thermal behaviour.Having in view the obtained data it has been ascertained that the systems present different degrees of compatibility depending on the mixtures composition. At higher temperatures, the compatibility of the components is changed.     

Fluorescent guanosine-nucleotide analogs suitable for photoaffinity-labeling experiments

The synthesis and properties of strongly fluorescent derivative of inosine and its nucleotides are described. Reaction of 2-chloro-inosinic acid with sodium azide leads to a product bearing the tetrazole ring between position 2 and 3. Methylation at N1 was effected with dimethyl sulfate. The corresponding nucleosides and their 5'-triphosphates were also prepared. Only the non-methylated series is at equilibrium with small concentrations of their azido forms, and can be photolyzed by wavelengths above 300 nm. Both series are strongly fluorescent, their emission and excitation fluorescence spectra, as well as their quantum yields were measured. The nucleoside 5'-triphosphates are able to initiate and sustain polymerization of porcine brain tubulin.     

Study of the compatibility in the poly (vinyl-chloride) -poly (vinyl-alcohol) system

Summary Although poly (vinyl-chloride) — PVC — and poly (vinyl-alcohol) — PVA —mixtures are used in practice for coatings, containers, fibers, few studies are encounterd concerning their compatibility (7, 8).This paper establishes both the optimum compatibility ratio and the thermal behaviour of the mixtures.The compatibility study in solid state was realised using the methodes: optical microscopy, thermogravimetry, DSC, inverse gaschromatography and IR spectroscopy.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor enhances function rather than survival of intrastriatal dopamine cell-rich grafts

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been shown to promote the survival of dopaminergic neurons from the substantia nigra in cell culture. In order to assess whether a similar survival-promoting effect is present also in vivo, we grafted fetal nigral tissue to the dopamine-depleted striatum of 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned rats receiving two-week intraventricular infusions or daily intrastriatal injections of BDNF, NGF, or vehicle. When infused chronically at a high dose (12 micrograms/day) into the lateral ventricle, BDNF caused a behavioral syndrome of reduced food and water intake, body weight loss, and locomotor hyperactivity in comparison to NGF- and vehicle-infused graft recipients. NGF-infused graft recipients displayed a transient weight loss during the first week of infusion. At 15 days, amphetamine-induced turning was significantly attenuated to 3% of pregraft values in BDNF-infused recipients, whereas functional graft effects were not present in NGF- or vehicle-infused animals. Survival of tyrosine hydroxylase-immunoreactive graft cells, however, was similar in all treatment groups. Notably, NGF- and BDNF-infusions led to a significant size increase of cholinergic host neurons in the medial septal nucleus and the vertical limb of the diagonal band ipsilateral to the infusion, whereas there was no cholinergic neuron hypertrophy in vehicle-infused animals. Daily intrastriatal injections of BDNF (2 micrograms) produced no weight loss or locomotor hyperactivity, but also enhanced functional graft effects in BDNF-injected, as compared to vehicle-injected animals. Survival rates of grafted tyrosine hydroxylase-immunoreactive cells were, however, similar in both groups.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
