Active and passive experiments on skeletal muscles are in general arranged on isolated muscles or by consideration of the whole muscle packages, such as the arm or the leg. Both methods exhibit advantages and disadvantages. By applying experiments on isolated muscles it turns out that no information about the surrounding tissues are considered what leads to insufficient specifications of the isolated muscle. Especially, the muscle shape and the fibre directions of an embedded muscle are completely different to that of the same isolated muscle. An explicit advantage, in contrast, is the possibility to study the mechanical characteristics in an unique, isolated way. On the other hand, by applying experiments on muscle packages the aforementioned pros and cons reverse. In such situation, the whole surrounding tissue is considered in the mechanical characteristics of the muscle which are much more difficult to identify. However, an embedded muscle reflects a much more realistic situation as in isolated condition. Thus, in the proposed work to our knowledge, we, for the first time, suggest a technique that allows to study characteristics of single skeletal muscles inside a muscle package without any computation of the tissue around the muscle of interest. In doing so, we use magnetic resonance imaging data of an upper arm during contraction. By applying a three-dimensional continuum constitutive muscle model we are able to study the biceps brachii inside the upper arm and validate the modelling approach by optical experiments.  相似文献

Decentralized power generation is gaining significance in liberalized electricity markets. An increasing decentralization of power supply is expected to make a particular contribution to climate protection. This article investigates the advantages and disadvantages of decentralized electricity generation according to the overall concept of sustainable development. On the basis of a hierarchically structured set of sustainability criteria, four future scenarios for Germany are assessed, all of which describe different concepts of electricity supply in the context of the corresponding social and economic developments. The scenarios are developed in an explorative way according to the scenario method and the sustainability criteria are established by a discursive method with societal actors. The evaluation is carried out by scientific experts. By applying an expanded analytic hierarchy process (AHP), a multicriteria evaluation is conducted that identifies dissent among the experts. The results demonstrate that decentralized electricity generation can contribute to climate protection. The extent to which it simultaneously guarantees security of supply is still a matter of controversy. However, experts agree that technical and economic boundary conditions are of major importance in this field. In the final section, the article discusses the method employed here as well as implications for future decentralized energy supply.  相似文献

Several oncogenic protein kinases including c-raf-1 and pp60(v-src) are known to directly interact with the 90 kDa heat shock protein (hsp90)/p50 complexes. Using a monoclonal antibody to detect p50 during a purification scheme, p50 was purified to homogeneity. Internal amino acid sequence information was obtained and used to clone a partial cDNA. Comparison of the p50 sequence to other cloned proteins revealed 89% homology with a glycosaminoglycan-binding protein and 54% homology with Drosophila cell cycle control protein (cdc) 37. Monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies were produced against a cleaved fusion protein that recognizes p50 with a high level of specificity. These antibodies recognize the 50 kDa protein present in c-raf-1 and pp60(v-src) complexes. No other proteins were recognized with these antibodies suggesting that p50 is a unique protein. Immunocytochemical visualization of p50 in NIH 3T3 cells indicates a primarily cytoplasmic localization around the nuclear membrane. A survey of p50 expression in murine tissues on a protein blot revealed the following relative levels of expression; thymus > spleen > brain > heart > kidney > liver > lung > skeletal muscle. These results link studies demonstrating complexation of certain kinases with hsp90/p50 in mammalian cells and a number of reports in yeast and Drosophila, demonstrating the importance of cdc37 in cell cycle and kinase function.  相似文献

The rate-distortion efficiency of video compression schemes is based on a sophisticated interaction between various motion representation possibilities, waveform coding of differences, and waveform coding of various refreshed regions. Hence, a key problem in high-compression video coding is the operational control of the encoder. This problem is compounded by the widely varying content and motion found in typical video sequences, necessitating the selection between different representation possibilities with varying rate-distortion efficiency. This article addresses the problem of video encoder optimization and discusses its consequences on the compression architecture of the overall coding system. Based on the well-known hybrid video coding structure, Lagrangian optimization techniques are presented that try to answer the question: what part of the video signal should be coded using what method and parameter settings?  相似文献

The goal of developing agrometeorological crop model inputs from remotely sensed information (AgRISTARS Early Warning/Crop Condition Assessment Project Subtask 5 within the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)) provided a focus and a mission for crop spectral investigations that would have been lacking otherwise. Because the task had never been attempted before, much effort has gone into developing measurement and interpretation skill, convincing the Scientific community of the validity and information content of the spectral measurements, and providing new understanding of the crop scenes viewed as affected by bidirectional, atmospheric, and soil background variations. Nonetheless, experiments conducted demonstrate that spectral vegetation indices (VI) a) are an excellent measure of the amount of green photosynthetically active tissue present in plant stands at any time during the season, and b) can reliably estimate leaf area index (LAI) and intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (IPAR)-two of the inputs needed in agrometeorological models. Progress was also made on using VI to quantify the effects of yield-detracting stresses on crop canopy development. In a historical perspective, these are significant accomplishments in a short time span. Spectral observations of fields from aircraft and satellite make direct checks on LAI and IPAR predicted by the agrometeorological models feasible and help extend the models to large areas. However, newness of the spectral interpretations, plus continual revisions in agrometeorological models and lack of feedback capability in them, have prevented the benefits of spectral inputs to agrometeorological models from being fully realized.  相似文献

The phytohormone ethylene exerts numerous beneficial and detrimental effects on postharvest quality and storage life of fruit and vegetables. In view of the current global challenge of reducing postharvest losses and waste of fruit and vegetables, the importance of ethylene management in the supply chain is paramount. For this purpose, various methods have been applied along the supply chain over the years; however, effective management of ethylene under real-time storage and transport conditions still remains a challenging task. This review explores the potential of photocatalytic and photochemical oxidation of ethylene for effective removal of this gas along the value chain of fruit and vegetables. These techniques involve the use of ultraviolet (UV) radiation with or without a catalyst. In photocatalytic oxidation, a semiconductor such as titanium dioxide is essential which acts as a photocatalyst on irradiation with UV light and thus facilitates the oxidation of ethylene at its surface, whereas in photochemical oxidation, extreme short wave (i.e. below 200 nm) vacuum ultraviolet radiation (VUV) consisting of high-energy photons eliminates ethylene in the gaseous state. This review gives a brief overview of current commercial techniques used in ethylene removal and then focuses on the photocatalytic and the photochemical oxidation of ethylene and the combination of both methods. The various factors affecting these processes are also discussed including the advantages and the drawbacks associated with them, and current applications of these methods in fruit and vegetable storage systems are highlighted. In addition, a future outlook on the application of these methods in postharvest storage of fresh produce is given.  相似文献

Transplantation of fetal nigral dopamine neurons into the caudate and putamen of Parkinson's disease patients produces limited symptomatic relief. One approach to augment the outgrowth and function of nigral grafts includes exposure of the graphs to neurotrophic factors; however, the temporal requirements for optimizing these actions are unknown. The present study characterized the ontogeny of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the rat striatum and used this information to define and evaluate three distinct periods of BDNF infusion into fetal nigral grafts transplanted into the striatum of rats with experimental Parkinson's disease. At postnatal day 1 (P1), BDNF and dopamine were measured at 17 and 27% of peak levels, respectively, that occurred at P27 for both. Both compounds showed their greatest surge between P7 and P20, increasing from 40% to approximately 95% of peak levels. Exogenous BDNF infused into transplants during weeks 1 and 2 after the transplantation, which coincide with the developmental period embryonic day 14 (E14)-P7 for transplanted tissue, did not improve rotational behavior or enhance fiber outgrowth of transplanted dopamine neurons. Delaying the BDNF infusion until transplanted tissue was approximately P8-P21 greatly enhanced the effect on rotational behavior and doubled the area of dopamine fiber outgrowth from the transplants. Delaying the infusion until transplanted tissue was approximately P36-P49 failed to augment fiber outgrowth and decreased the behavioral function of transplants. Thus, the optimal effect of exogenous BDNF on the development of dopamine neurons in fetal nigral transplants occurs at a postnatal age when endogenous dopamine and BDNF show the greatest increases during the normal development of the striatum.  相似文献
