AIM OF THE STUDY: Though efficient in stain and plaque removal, air polishing is highly abrasive on root cementum or dentin even if working parameters are adjusted to minimize damage. As abrasiveness is also influenced by the physical properties of the powders used, the aim of the study was to evaluate the safety of novel low abrasive air polishing powders in vitro. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using four novel air polishing powders (A, B, C and D) and a standard sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) powder, roots of 126 extracted teeth were air polished under standardized conditions at various working parameter combinations (distance: 2 mm, 4 mm and 6 mm; powder and water setting: low, medium and high) at an angulation of 90 degrees for 20 s. Instrumentation was performed in triplicate; resulting root defects were quantified laser-optically. RESULTS: Mean defect depths after application of powders A, B, C and D were significantly lower than with standard powder (A: 17.9 +/- 10.9 micro m, B: 48.2 +/- 32.7 micro m, C: 92.5 +/- 57.9 micro m, D: 33.9 +/- 19.6 micro m, NaHCO3: 163.1 +/- 71.1 micro m) (Kruskal-Wallis test). Among the experimental powders, D was transported most reliably in the air polishing unit and allowed complete removal of disclosed plaque as assessed on freshly extracted teeth. CONCLUSION: The novel air polishing powder D is of low abrasiveness to root cementum and dentin while being effective in removing dental plaque. Thus, it may be useful for safe and efficient plaque removal on exposed root surfaces.  相似文献

The diagnosis of optic nerve hypoplasia and hypopituitarism must be entertained in infants who present for evaluation of cholestatic jaundice, particularly if there is associated hypoglycaemia and wandering nystagmus. Although the hepatic dysfunction seems to resolve, the long term prognosis of liver disease in optic nerve hypoplasia remains unknown.  相似文献

We report the case of an 8 week old infant with fulminant autoimmune haemolytic anaemia refractory to conventional immunomodulating treatment. Massive haemolysis resulted in cardiac decompensation and acute renal failure which necessitated mechanical ventilation and peritoneal dialysis. Rituximab, a chimeric anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody, halted progression of the haemolytic process, but the patient died of acute viral pneumonia and disseminated fungal infection. Earlier introduction of rituximab might have prevented the renal complications. Paediatricians should be aware of this useful therapeutic tool for treatment of refractory autoimmune haemolytic anaemia and balance its use against the risk of potential life threatening infection.  相似文献

Purpose: To establish the prevalence and severity of myopia among the Chinese Hong Kong students and to study the relationship between myopia and optical components.Methods;One thousand and seventy-five freshmen of the 1993-1994 academic year in the Chinese University of Hong Kong underwent the eye examination including evaluation of refractive error, keratometry, and A-scan ultrasonic biometry. The data were analyzed with the SPSS/PC 4. 01 statistical package. Results: The prevalence of myopia was 91. 7% with the mean refraction being -4. 00 ± 2. 64D in this young adult population. The statistical analyses demonstrated a significant correlation between refractive value and axial length of the globe (r=-0. 78), vitreous length (r=-0. 76), anterior chamber depth (r=-0. 33), lens thickness (r = 0. 13) and corneal curvature (r = 0. 19). Conclusion: The refractive status is mainly dependent on the axial length. In general, the higher the myopia was, the longer the eyeball, the deeper the anterior chamber,  相似文献

Intraoral dissemination of treponemes after periodontal therapy   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Oral treponemes are related to chronic periodontitis, but the effect of periodontal therapy on the majority of treponemal species is unknown. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the dynamics in prevalence profiles of treponemes in different habitats of the oral cavity. Thirty-five patients with chronic periodontitis were randomly assigned to mechanical debridement alone (control group) or systemic amoxicillin/metronidazole plus chlorhexidine (test group). Subgingival and mucous membrane plaque samples were taken at baseline, after 10 days, and during supportive periodontal therapy at 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 months. T. denticola, T. lecithinolyticum, T. maltophilum, T. socranskii, T. vincentii, and treponemal phylotypes I–VII were detected using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and dot blot analysis. For the majority of the assessed treponemes, a significant intragroup increase in prevalence in the different habitats (P<0.05) occurred over the study course but, compared to debridement alone, adjunctive antimicrobial therapy resulted in a nonsignificant trend toward lower prevalence in the subgingival habitat. In no case were treponemes eradicated from the oral cavity. After both therapies, possibly new infection with and/or dissemination of Treponema ssp. occurred, which led to treponemes recovering in different habitats and to increased intraoral prevalence. The prescribed adjunctive antimicrobial therapy may limit this increase in the subgingival region.  相似文献

Introduction: Lactoperoxidase (LPO) belongs to the immunologically relevant mammalian heme peroxidases. The enzyme contributes in external secretions to the humoral immune defense against pathogens by oxidation of thiocyanate (SCN) and iodide (I). The generation of oxidized thiocyanate and/or iodine species is also important in numerous biotechnological applications of LPO.

Areas covered: In this review, we give an overview about the present knowledge of LPO concerning enzymatic structure, catalytic cycles and (pseudo-)halogenated species generated by the enzyme. Redox properties of LPO as well as kinetic aspects regarding the different enzymatic cycles are discussed in order to gain insights into the disturbance of the (pseudo-)halogenating enzyme activity under pathological conditions. Important structural features of LPO and crystallographic studies on the interaction and reaction of organic substrates with the enzyme are also summarized. A broad discussion is devoted to the binding and oxidation of substrates that either inhibit or promote LPO activity.

Expert opinion: On the basis of these data, different strategies to further optimize LPO functions in humoral defense of mucous surfaces and biotechnological applications are discussed. In particular, hydrophobic organic substrates with a 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl partial structure considerably enhance the (pseudo-)halogenating activity of LPO. Their application provides, thus, a new strategy to enhance the anti-microbial activity of this enzyme.  相似文献
