In the last years, there has been a growing interest in the recovery of bioactive compounds from natural sources for the development of novel functional foods.In this study, natural extracts, previously obtained by fractioned high pressure extraction from “Saco” cherry culls, were characterized in terms of anticancer activity. The product derived from CO2:EtOH (90:10, v/v) extraction after a pre-treatment of raw material with supercritical CO2 during 1 h, exhibited the highest antiproliferative activity in human HT29 colon cancer cells. In addition, when compared with doxorubicin, cherry extracts induced cell cycle arrest in a different cell cycle checkpoint.In order to obtain extracts with enhanced antiproliferative activity, the extraction process was further explored. Using highly pure CO2 and EtOH 96% the inhibition of cancer cell growth was significantly enhanced by 16-fold. In addition, the incorporation of a conventional extraction step with MetOH or EtOH:H2O (50:50, v/v) prior to fractioned process allowed to obtain cherry extracts more concentrated in antiproliferative compounds. Perillyl alcohol present in cherry extracts was pointed to be one of the major responsible for anticancer properties of cherry extracts. 相似文献

In this study we evaluated the efficiency of six extraction methods for emu fat based on the quantification of yield, color, density, refraction index, and rheological behavior. Both physical methods (Bain Marie, rotary evaporator, fusion, ultrasound, and microwave) and chemical methods (solvents) were evaluated. Oil properties were compared with commercial emu oil as a reference. Solvent‐based extraction produced the greatest yield (72.8%). Among the physical methods, the greatest yield was produced by the ultrasound method (42.8%). In general, properties were similar to those reported for vegetable oils. The rotary evaporator method showed the greatest difference in total color (ΔE) in comparison with a commercially‐produced reference, while the fusion method showed the smallest ΔE. No statistically significant differences were found between the density and refraction index of the treated samples and those of the reference. Kinematic viscosity increased significantly in samples extracted via microwave method. All samples displayed pseudoplastic behavior. The data showed a good fit to the power law model (R2 > 0.90). The consistency coefficient and flow behavior index were determined for all methods. Practical applications: Therapeutic applications for oil have been posited for emu oil. In pharmaceutical products, oils are used as emollients and as carriers for medicinal substances. The practical importance of an oil depends on its physical properties, thus a thorough understanding of those physical properties is very important for identifying potential applications. These properties are affected by the extraction method employed; the present paper evaluates the effects of a range of extraction methods on yield efficiency, as well as physical and rheological properties. In this paper we evaluate the stability, purity and regulated quality composition of fatty acids and sterols (both physico‐chemical and sensory) of commercial Argentinean virgin olive oils in order to evaluate their acceptance on the world market. For this purpose, samples of the best known and most widely distributed oils in supermarkets located in Buenos Aires (Argentina) were acquired. After thoroughly analysing these samples, only 20% were considered to have an acceptable quality. However, some were excluded because of their high campesterol content, which could be an intrinsic characteristic of these oils. The most useful analytical parameter used to confirm authenticity was ECN‐42 R – ECN‐42 T, followed by wax content and 3.5 stigmastadienes. Only 24% of the extra‐virgin olive oil samples were classified as ‘extra‐virgin’ from the regulated quality viewpoint. The low oleic and high linolenic acid contents of the Argentinean virgin olive oils stand out when compared with European virgin olive oils. The oxidative stability values may be considered very low, indeed even lower than those obtained in Spanish virgin olive oils. 相似文献

Since the discovery of the 'formose reaction' by Butlerow, total synthesis of carbohydrates has undergone rapid development. The most important methods for the asymmetric synthesis of monosaccharides and analogues of biological importance are presented. Nowadays any natural and non-natural monosaccharide can be prepared pure in both enantiomeric forms starting from inexpensive starting materials. Metal-based asymmetric catalysis and organocatalysis have been successfully applied, alone or in combination with chemoenzymatic methods. Alternative methods rely upon substrate- or reagent-controlled diastereo- and enantioselective reactions. The relationship between nutritional knowledge and the consumption frequency of preferred food-types was studied among one sample of Uruguayan consumers. A locally-adapted version of Parmenter & Wardle's General Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire and a food consumption survey based on 39 food groups were completed by a total of 270 participants. Cluster Analysis enabled the identification of two clusters showing different levels of nutritional knowledge--cluster 1 (n = 177) and cluster 2 (n = 93), providing an average of 73.6% and 52.9% of correct answers, respectively. These clusters differed significantly (p < or = 0.05) in age and educational distribution--cluster 1 was composed mainly by older adults and persons with a higher educational level. A number of areas were identified where nutritional knowledge was extremely poor, as was the case with the recommended daily fruit and vegetable intake and the caloric content of the nutrients. Overall, nutritional knowledge was found to have a positive influence on food preferences and consumption frequency, those participants with a higher nutritional knowledge reporting a higher consumption of fruits, vegetables and low-fat products, in addition to a lower consumption of high-fat and high-sugar foods. 相似文献

Biodiesel production from cheap lipid raw materials is economically welcome, but a high free fatty acids (FFA) content makes
it incompatible with traditional alkaline catalysts. Although liquid mineral acids are alternatively used, serious drawbacks
such as high corrosiveness and large effluent generation, as well as the impossibility of catalyst reuse compromises its application.
Contrarily, solid acid catalysts appear to be an attractive option; however, the water present or generated during FFA esterification
provokes the leaching and deactivation of these catalysts. Thus, in this work we have evaluated the use of tin chloride SnCl2, which is less corrosive, water tolerant, and a recyclable Lewis acid catalyst, on FFA ethanolysis using waste cooking oil
samples (WCO). Additionally, the main kinetic parameters of the reactions were assessed. Compared to pTSA (p-toluenesulfonic-acid), a catalyst also evaluated, SnCl2 efficiently promoted FFA ethanolysis even in the presence of high amounts of water (ca. 0.1–5.0% w/w). Moreover, the homogeneous

A potential antitumoral fluorescent indole derivative, methyl 6-methoxy-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1H-indole-2-carboxylate, was evaluated for the in vitro cell growth inhibition on three human tumor cell lines, MCF-7 (breast adenocarcinoma), A375-C5 (melanoma), and NCI-H460 (non-small cell lung cancer), after a continuous exposure of 48 h, exhibiting very low GI50 values for all the cell lines tested (0.25 to 0.33 μM). This compound was encapsulated in different nanosized liposome formulations, containing egg lecithin (Egg-PC), dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC), dipalmitoyl phosphatidylglycerol (DPPG), DSPC, cholesterol, dihexadecyl phosphate, and DSPE-PEG. Dynamic light scattering measurements showed that nanoliposomes with the encapsulated compound are generally monodisperse and with hydrodynamic diameters lower than 120 nm, good stability and zeta potential values lower than -18 mV. Dialysis experiments allowed to monitor compound diffusion through the lipid membrane, from DPPC/DPPG donor liposomes to NBD-labelled lipid/DPPC/DPPG acceptor liposomes. 相似文献

Lipid kinases and phosphatases play essential roles in signal transduction processes involved in cytoskeletal rearrangement,
membrane trafficking, and cellular differentiation. Phosphatidic acid (PtdOH) is an important mediator lipid in eukaryotic
cells, but little is known regarding its regulation in the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, an agent of Chagas disease. In order to clarify the relationship between PtdOH metabolism and developmental stages of T. cruzi, epimastigotes in culture were subjected to hyperosmotic stress (~1,000 mOsm/L), mimicking the environment in the rectum
of vector triatomine bugs. These experimental conditions resulted in differentiation to an intermediate form between epimastigotes
and trypomastigotes. Morphological changes of epimastigotes were correlated with an increase in PtdOH mass accomplished by
increased enzyme activity of diacylglycerol kinase (DAGK, E.C. 2.7.1.107) and concomitant decreased activity of phosphatidate
phosphatases type 1 and type 2 (PAP1, PAP2, E.C. 3.1.3.4). Our results indicate progressive increases of PtdOH levels during
the differentiation process, and suggest that the regulation of PtdOH metabolism is an important mechanism in the transition

Triblock copolymer additives are found to stabilize thin-film dewetting of B-type homopolymers with degree of polymerization (DOP) P deposited on silicon oxide. The triblock copolymers’ architectures are ABA and BAB, where A and B represent anchoring and nonadsorbing blocks with DOP's N A and N B, respectively. Upon adding 1 vol.% of the ABA additive, dewetting is only observed for anchoring block molar fractions, f A, below 4%. Dewetting is arrested in films containing 1 vol.% ABA, BAB, or AB that have similar values of f A ~ 8%, showing that chain architecture is not the only indicator of a successful additive. Compared with films containing diblock copolymers, the interfacial excess, z*, of triblock copolymers at the melt/substrate interface is relatively small as measured by low-energy forward-recoil spectrometry. Because adsorbed copolymers can reduce the capillary driving force for dewetting and participate in entanglements with matrix chains, the higher coverage and grafting density observed for diblock copolymers suggests that diblocks are more effective than triblocks in improving thin-film stability. 相似文献
