The complex procurement process entailed by the private finance initiative (PFI) means that clients need new capacities to manage their relationships with bidders and to assess project proposals if the desired level of design quality is to be achieved. To assist local authorities in their client role, a new Architectural Design Quality Evaluation Tool was developed. The aim was to improve the quality of design in residential sheltered housing, procured through the PFI. The tool was developed for and applied to a programme that will see the replacement of a local authority's entire sheltered housing stock. The tool has two functions: (1) to inform the client's assessment process and assist with the selection of the preferred bidding consortium through a series of stages in the PFI process; and (2) to improve the quality of all the submitted designs through an iterative process. Although several existing mechanisms are available for evaluating the performance attributes of buildings, few also tackle the less tangible amenity attributes, which are vital to the feeling of home. The new tool emphasizes the amenity attributes without neglecting performance.  相似文献

Under the influence of acoustic radiation force, particles can be trapped and deformed at the pressure node in a microfluidic channel. Based on this principle, the elastic modulus of biological cells can be estimated. In this study, a numerical framework, consisting of a boundary element model for acoustic field and an axisymmetric shell model, is developed to simulate the cell deformation under acoustic radiation force. The boundary element model is used to calculate the radiation traction exerted on the cell surface. The cell membrane deformation due to this traction is simulated by using the axisymmetric shell model. The Young’s moduli of algae and red blood cell membranes are then estimated by comparing the experimental observation with the simulated membrane deformation. It is found that the value of Young’s modulus of the red blood cell membrane is lower than that of algae cell membrane. Furthermore, for both cells, the estimated Young’s moduli are negligible compared to the bulk moduli of the cells reported in the previous studies.  相似文献

Professional geropsychology is a growing area of practice and training. To meet the mental health needs of an aging population, increasing numbers of psychologists need to develop competence to work with older adults, their families, and related care systems. The Pikes Peak model for geropsychology training (Knight, Karel, Hinrichsen, Qualls, & Duffy, 2009) delineates attitude, knowledge, and skill competencies for professional geropsychology practice and makes recommendations for training. In this paper, we define and illustrate the Pikes Peak geropsychology practice competencies through a case example. In the case, an older man with complex needs seeks care through a generalist psychologist in an outpatient setting. The attitudes, knowledge, and skills that the psychologist needs to consider, and implications for training, are reviewed. Training recommendations and resources are provided, with a focus on the training needs of psychologists who wish to expand their practices to include older adults.
