Effects of continuous medroxyprogesterone acetate on lipoprotein metabolism in postmenopausal women receiving estrogen

Seed storage globulins of the 7S and 11S type are synthesized in the seeds of angiosperms and gymnosperms. We have isolated and characterized a vicilin-like gene expressed in the cycad Zamia furfuraceae. Sequence comparisons reveal clear similarities to a sucrose-binding protein isolated from soybean. We suggest the existence of a superfamily of related genes including both vicilin-like and legumin-like seed globulin genes as well as genes coding for spherulins, germins and sucrose-binding-proteins.     

Effects of microstructure and environment on room-temperature tensile properties of B2-type polycrystalline CoTi intermetallic compound

Room-temperature tensile property and fracture mode of B2-type polycrystalline CoTi intermetallic compound was studied as functions of microstructure and environment. Using a hot-rolled CoTi sheet, various microstructures were prepared by different heat treatments and pre-straining. Tensile elongation as well as ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of specimens deformed in vacuum (i.e. intrinsic tensile elongation and strength) depended on microstructure. The hot-rolled and recovered specimens showed higher elongation and tensile strength than the fully-annealed and aged specimens. Also, the pre-strained specimen showed the improved elongation and UTS in comparison with the fully-annealed specimen. On the other hand, tensile elongation and UTS of the specimens deformed in air were lower than those of the specimens deformed in vacuum, irrespective of microstructure. The extent of embrittlement was lower in the hot-rolled, recovered and pre-strained specimens than in the fully-annealed and aged specimens. SEM observation for the hot-rolled and recovered specimens showed that the quasi-cleavage fracture mode was dominant irrespective of testing environment. However, the fully-annealed, aged and pre-strained specimens consisting of recrystallized grains exhibited quasi-cleavage fracture mode mixed with intergranular fracture mode. The results showed that not only the intrinsic room-temperature tensile properties but also the environmental embrittlement of CoTi intermetallic compound depended upon lattice defects (such as dislocations and vacancies) in addition to grain size and morphology.     

Stability robustness for linear state space models - a Lyapunov mapping approach

Some Pythagorean-like conditions for the existence of a common Lyapunov solution for two given matrices are presented. These conditions are set on the Lyapunov mappings associated with given matrices. The key is the semipositiveness of linear mappings defined on symmetric matrices. From the viewpoint of the existence of a common Lyapunov solution, some known stability robustness results are reviewed and refined.

一、日本式公寓的历史 1923年，关东大地震袭击了日本。在关东地区，包括东京和其他外围城市在内的大量建筑和住宅都在地震中倒塌。木结构住宅遭到了破坏性的损害。1924年，“同润会”成立，其目标是建造抗震效果更好的钢筋混凝土建筑。1926年，“同润会”建成了他们的第一栋钢筋混凝土公寓，而他们的最后一个作品完成于1934年。图1是位于代官山的一个同润会公寓。它的建筑面积约为30m^2，包括两个榻榻米房间。

Different effects of carboxy-terminal deletion in the adrenodoxin molecule on cytochrome c and acetylated cytochrome c reductions

In immunoblotting analysis using a rabbit antibody to bovine adrenodoxin, the total proteins of the bovine adrenal cortex gave two bands, suggesting the presence of two forms of adrenodoxin in vivo: full-length and carboxy-terminal deleted adrenodoxins. To examine the effect of the carboxy-terminal deletion of adrenodoxin on its activity, cDNAs for Arg115stop mutant adrenodoxin and for Asp113stop mutant adrenodoxin were constructed. The wild type [Ad(2-128)] and carboxy-terminal deleted [Ad(2-114) and Ad(2-112)] recombinant adrenodoxins expressed in Escherichia coli were purified to give a single band on SDS-PAGE. They showed an A414/A276 value of 0.92. In an NADPH-cytochrome c reduction assay, the Km values for cytochrome c in the reconstituted system with AD(2-128), Ad(2-114) and Ad(2-112) were 39, 235 and 618 mM, respectively. The Vmax values were 638, 700 and 898 mol/min/mol flavin, respectively. In an NADPH-acetylated cytochrome c reduction assay, the maximum activity of Ad(2-128) was obtained at 50 mM NaCl, while the maximum activities of Ad(2-114) and Ad(2-112) were obtained at 100 mM NaCl; the latter values were 4-times higher than that of Ad(2-128). In the presence of 100 mM NaCl, the Km values for acetylated cytochrome c in the system reconstituted with Ad(2-128), Ad(2-114) and Ad(2-112) were 220, 33 and 22 microM, respectively. The Vmax values were 352, 305 and 382 mol/min/mol flavin, respectively. These results indicate that the effects of the carboxy-terminal deletion of adrenodoxin on NADPH-cytochrome c and acetylated cytochrome c reductions are different; the carboxy-terminal region (residues 113-128) of adrenodoxin largely contributes to the binding with cytochrome c but disturbs the binding with acetylated cytochrome c.     

Ceramic capillary splices for optical fibres

A simple technique for splicing optical fibres is reported. The technique utilises a self-aligning ceramic capillary with inner dimensions slightly larger than the optical fibre. An average loss of below 0.1 dB is obtained for splices in graded-index and single-mode fibres with a 50 and 10 ?m core diameter, respectively.     

Structural characterization of 1,2-polybutadiene by 13C n.m.r. spectroscopy: 1. Signal assignment in hydrogenated polybutadienes

The configurational sequences of 1,2-unit in a series of hydrogenated syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadienes were investigated in relation to the sequence distribution of 1,2- and 1,4-units. The signals at 10.20–10.94 ppm were assigned to the methyl carbons in the isolated 1,2-unit, the 1,2-1,2 dyad sequence flanked by 1,4-unit, and the 1,2-1,2-1,2 triad sequence, in order of increasing magnetic field. The splittings due to the configurational sequences were observed in the signals, reflecting the dyad and triad sequences of the 1,2-unit, which were assigned by considering the relative intensity of the signals and also the chemical shifts of model polymers.     

Production of horse radish peroxidase by plant cell culture

Calluses were induced from the stem and the root tissues of horse radish plantlets. Cell aggregate selections were carried out on them to obtain a cell line with higher peroxidase activity, and the isozyme patterns of the peroxidases from the cultured cells and their utility values as a clinical diagnostic reagent were investigated. The repetition of the cell aggregate selection resulted in increases in peroxidase activities in each generation of selection; about eleven fold in the 13th generation of selection from the stem tissues and about nine fold in the 13th generation from the root tissues. One of the cell lines (N5K6-S), originally derived from the stem tissues, after selectin showed a tenfold increase in peroxidase activity within two weeks of culture in a liquid medium. The value as a clinical diagnostic reagent of peroxidases extracted from the N5K6-S cells was estimated to be equivalent to those already commercially available for the same purpose. There were significant differences in the isoenzyme patterns of the peroxidases from root tissues and those from cultured cells. From these results, the possibility of commercial production of peroxidase utilizing plant tissue and cell culture techniques was discussed.     

Experimental study on house cooling and heating with solar energy using flat plate collector

The OSE Project aims at developing the technology to utilize solar energy for heating, cooling and hot water supply on the basis of various technology for energy conservation in buildings. For the first step of this project a solar heating and cooling system with flat plate collectors and absorption refrigeration machine was installed in a house in 1974. This paper reports outlines of the system and operating results.
