Postoperative complications after coronary bypass operations in patients with pulmonary impairment]

Two women with atrial escape-capture bigeminy were reported in whom sinus P waves and escape P waves alternated with each other. Their electrocardiographic findings showed that, during the bigeminal rhythm, 2:1 exit block of sinus impulses associated with entrance block of escape impulses occurred in the sinoatrial junction. Three phenomena are suggested to explain the observations. (1) Seeming bradycardia-dependent sinoatrial exit block may have occurred, probably as a result of phasic changes in vagal tone due to respiration, with decreased vagal tone depressing conductivity in the sinoatrial junction to a greater degree than automaticity in the sinus node. (2) In case 1, type II second-degree entrance block in the sinoatrial junction may have occurred, reflecting the presence of sinus parasystole with incomplete entrance block. (3) Sinus escape also may have occurred, especially in case 2. These phenomena have never been reported before.     

Endothelin A-receptor blockade worsens endotoxin-induced hepatic microcirculatory changes and necrosis

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Endothelin 1 is considered to be an important regulator of sinusoidal blood flow and increases during endotoxemia. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of endothelin 1 in hepatic microcirculation, oxygen transport, and liver injury during endotoxemia. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were continuously infused with 2.5 mL/h of saline, 0.8 mg . kg-1 . h-1 of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), 3 mg . kg-1 . h-1 of BQ-485, an endothelin A-receptor antagonist, or LPS plus BQ-485 for 7 hours. RESULTS: BQ-485 infusion had no significant effect on hepatic microcirculation and liver injury. LPS increased the plasma levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and total bilirubin and decreased the hepatic adenosine triphosphate (ATP) level and bile flow rate. LPS + BQ-485 infusion further increased the plasma levels of AST and total bilirubin and decreased the bile flow rate and the hepatic ATP level. Dual-spot microspectroscopy revealed mild decreases in sinusoidal erythrocyte velocity and oxygen transport in the LPS group and profound decreases in these parameters in the LPS + BQ-485 group. Histological examinations revealed massive necrotic changes in the pericentral regions of the LPS + BQ-485 group. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that blockade of endothelin A receptors disturbs hepatic microcirculation and oxygen transport and aggravates the necrotic injury induced by endotoxin.     

Expression of CD44 variant 6 and lymphatic invasion: importance to lymph node metastasis in gastric cancer

Lymph node metastasis is a critical prognostic factor for gastric cancer. In the present investigation we examined clinicopathologic factors influencing the metastatic processes to the lymph mode and their prognostic importance. A randomly selected group of 98 patients with adenocarcinomas of the stomach who underwent gastrectomy plus systematic lymph node dissection at Osaka Police Hospital from 1991 to 1996 were analyzed. Altogether 37 (38%) cancers were positive for CD44 variant 6 (v6) staining, 31 (32%) were intermediately stained, and 30 (30%) were negative. CD44-v6 expression correlated well with lymph node metastasis. Expression of CD44-v6 and lymphatic invasion were independent risk factors for metastatic lymph nodes. Among the patients with CD44-v6-positive and lymphatic invasion-positive cancers, 88% had lymph node metastasis, whereas only 13% of patients negative for both factors had lymph node metastasis. Although CD44-v6 expression and lymphatic invasion have been reported to be risk factors for recurrence and a poor prognosis, in this investigation these factors were found not to be significant for hematogenous and lymphatic recurrences or overall survival rates. Thus expression of CD44-v6 and lymphatic invasion may regulate lymph node metastases from gastric cancer.     

On the high-temperature corrosion of Fe-Cr alloys in sulfur vapor

The mechanism of sulfidation of Fe-Cr alloys ranging from 8 to 97 wt.% chromium was determined from studies of scale structures, surface morphologies of scale, and reaction kinetics. Although the kinetics of sulfidation were quite similar to those previously determined by Mrowec et al., the structures in the present work were different, being triplex in nature. The growth mechanism of each layer was determined, and the overall sulfidation behavior was compared to the oxidation behavior. Many similarities between the two corrosion processes were observed.     

Mating-induced mating-type cassette conversion in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

We have previously reported that the HMRa-bearing restriction fragment of a rho degrees sir4-11 strain (HMLalpha-MATalpha-HMRa), which acts as an alpha-mater because of being rho degrees , changes its electrophoretic mobility when the strain mates with a certain group of a-mating strains (HMLalpha-MATa-HMRa). In this study, we found that the sir4-11 strain being rho degrees was not essential for this phenomenon and also that the altered form of the fragment contained HMRalpha in place of HMRa. Furthermore, we observed conversion of HMLa to HMLalpha in the cross in which a sir4-11 HMLa-MATalpha-HMRalpha strain was mated with a representative of the above-mentioned a-mating strain. In addition, when this a-mating strain was mated with a SIR(+) HMLalpha-MATa-HMRalpha strain, the resultant diploid was found to be HMLalpha/HMLalpha MATa/MATalphaHMRa/HMRalpha, indicating that conversion of MATa to MATalpha had taken place in the course of mating. From all these observations, we conclude that there is a group of S. cerevisiae strains that carries factor(s) that induces conversion of a mating-type cassette of the mating partner to alpha mating-type cassette and that this mating type cassette conversion takes place in all three mating type loci, HML, MAT and HMR, if the loci are in the non-silenced condition.     

Effect of lying behavior on uterine blood flow in cows during the third trimester of gestation

Seven Holstein cows (BW = 639.4 +/- 28.8 kg, age = 62.6 +/- 6.9 mo, parity = 3.1 +/- 0.4 yr) (mean +/- SE) were used to measure uterine blood flow using a transit time ultrasonic flow meter. Ultrasonic flow probes were implanted (d 218 +/- 4 of gestation) around both uterine arteries (n = 3) or the gravid uterine artery (n = 4) to measure variations in uterine blood flow through this vessel in response to postural change (standing and lying). Implantation of the ultrasonic blood flow probe was successful in all 7 cows. Uterine blood flow was measured for 22.9, 23.1, and 21.4 h/d on d 226, 248, and 269 of gestation, respectively. Cows exhibited normal durations of gestation (272.8 +/- 1.6 d), gave birth to normal healthy calves (birth weight = 41.5 +/- 3.0 kg), and did not retain their placenta. Uterine blood flow to the gravid horn during lying was greater than during standing on d 226 (standing vs. lying, 8.04 vs. 8.79 L/min, respectively), d 248 (9.87 vs. 11.06 L/min), and d 269 (8.15 vs. 9.74 L/min) of gestation. Cows spent nearly 50% of their time lying during our observations at all gestational ages. Greater blood supply to the gravid uterus was observed during lying than during standing in this study.     

Hiding an image with a light-scattering medium and use of a contrast-discrimination method for readout

Hiding image data with a material such as a light-scattering medium is useful as an initial stage of data protection, because the hidden image can be detected only by observation with a specific technique. A light-scattering medium is used to hide the image data, and a low-temporal-coherence interferometer performs the readout processing. A new readout method for detecting pixel values of the image is proposed to overcome spatial variation of the light intensity and distortion of the interference fringes. The introduction of spatial coding further improves the performance by overcoming spatial variations of the light-scattering medium and variations in the reflectance of given pixels.     

The crystal growth and thermoelectric properties of chromium disilicide

Single crystals of chromium disilicide about 8 mm in diameter and 35 mm long were grown using the floating zone technique. Measurements of electrical resistivity , Hall coefficient R and thermoelectric power were carried out in the temperature range from 85 to 1100 K. The values of and showed the anisotropy over the temperature range studied. The ratios parallel and perpendicular to the c-axis were / =1.9 and /=1.7 respectively, at room temperature. It was found to be a degenerate semiconductor having the hole concentration of 6.3×10²⁰ cm^–3 below 600 K. The effective masses of holes parallel and perpendicular to the c-axis determined from the thermoelectric power and the hole concentration near room temperature were estimated to be five and three times as large as a free electron mass, respectively. The calculation on the values of and was made using those effective masses. These values showed good agreement with the observed values in the temperature range from 150 to 1100 K.
