With the current emphasis on the extension of the role of the radiographer, radiographers in some hospitals now undertake some of the procedures traditionally performed by radiologists. In the present study, dose-area product (DAP) measurements for over 1000 barium enema examinations performed by radiologists and radiographers were analysed and compared to ascertain whether there were significant differences in the radiation dose to the patient, depending on the category of staff performing the examination. All examinations were reported by a radiologist. The radiologist's reports were analysed against the known outcomes to compare the diagnosticity of the examination when carried out by the two categories of staff. The study shows that although radiographers are able to produce consistent diagnostic results, there is an increase in patient dose due to extra films taken for reporting, which may be difficult to justify. Measures for reducing the dose from this component of the examination were explored. 相似文献

Studies of patients with brain damage suggest that specific brain regions may be differentially involved in representing/processing certain categories of conceptual knowledge. With regard to the dissociation that has received the most attention--between the domains of living things and artifacts--a debate continues as to whether these category-specific effects reflect neural implementation of categories directly or some more basic properties of brain organization. The present positron emission tomography (PET) study addressed this issue by probing explicitly for differential activation associated with written names of objects from the domains of living things or artifacts during similarity judgments about different attributes of these objects. Subjects viewed triads of written object names and selected one of two response words as more similar to a target word according to a specified perceptual attribute (typical color of the objects) or an associative attribute (typical location of the objects). The control task required a similarity judgment about the number of syllables in the target and response words. All tasks were performed under two different stimulus conditions: names of living things and names of artifacts. Judgments for both domains and both attribute types activated an extensive, distributed, left-hemisphere semantic system, but showed some differential activation-particularly as a function of attribute type. The left temporo-occipito-parietal junction showed enhanced activity for judgments about object location, whereas the left anteromedial temporal cortex and caudate nucleus were differentially activated by color judgments. Smaller differences were seen for living and nonliving domains, the positive findings being largely consistent with previous studies using objects; in particular, words denoting artifacts produced enhanced activation in the left posterior middle temporal gyrus. These results suggest that, within a distributed conceptual system activated by words, the more prominent neural distinction relates to type of attribute. 相似文献

The proopiocortin gene is located on chromosome 2 in humans. A 13-kb DNA fragment containing proopiocortin gene sequences was identified in human cells while proopiocortin-related genes sequences of 9.8 and 6.2 kb were present in mouse cells. In human-mouse cell hybrids which contained reduced numbers of human chromosomes and a complete set of mouse chromosomes, the 9.8- and 6.2-kb fragments were always present while the 13-kb fragment segregated with human chromosome 2 and the chromosome 2 enzyme markers acid phosphatase-1 (ACP1), malate dehydrogenase-1 (MDHI), and isocitrate dehydrogenase-1 (IDH1). Analysis of a single cell hybrid with a broken chromosome 2 indicates that the proopiocortin and ACP1 genes are closely linked and in the distal region of the short arm of chromosome 2. 相似文献

The chemical microstructural, physical, and thermal properties of the Morus alba L. stem fibers (MAFs) are described for the first time in this work. By analyzing the results of chemical composition, it was observed that the cellulose content of the stem of MAFs is an acceptable value when compared with other fibers and showed better results. Due to their lightweight (1316 kg/m3) and the presence of high cellulose content (58.65%) with very little amount of wax (0.56%), they provide good bonding properties. In addition, analyzing the results of X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, we observe a degree of crystallinity of 62.06%, which is closely associated with the presence of crystalline cellulose, while the other components are amorphous. The diameter of the extracted cellulosic fibers was in the range 6–20 µm. Moreover, it was possible to identify the degradation step of each primary component of lignocellulosic fiber and to observe that it is thermally stable up to 216°C. The characterization results show that the MAF is a better replacement material for synthetic fibers because of its significant physical, chemical, and thermal properties. 相似文献

Identification of the short transient waveform, called a spike, in the cortical electroencephalogram (EEG) plays an important role during diagnosis of neurological disorders such as epilepsy. It has been suggested that artificial neural networks (ANN) can be employed for spike detection in the EEG, if suitable features are provided as input to an ANN. In this paper, we explore the performance of neural network-based classifiers using features selected by algorithms suggested by four previous investigators. Of these, three algorithms model the spike by mathematical parameters and use them as features for classification while the fourth algorithm uses raw EEG to train the classifier. The objective of this paper is to examine if there is any inherent advantage to any particular set of features, subject to the condition that the same data are used for all feature selection algorithms. Our results suggest that artificial neural networks trained with features selected using any one of the above three algorithms as well as raw EEG directly fed to the ANN will yield similar results. 相似文献

We conducted a quantitative and qualitative chemical analysis of cane toad bufadienolides—the cardioactive steroids that are
believed to be the principal cane toad toxins. We found complex shifts in toxin composition through toad ontogeny: (1) eggs
contain at least 28 dominant bufadienolides, 17 of which are not detected in any other ontogenetic stage; (2) tadpoles present
a simpler chemical profile with two to eight dominant bufadienolides; and (3) toxin diversity decreases during tadpole life
but increases again after metamorphosis (larger metamorph/juvenile toads display five major bufadienolides). Total bufadienolide
concentrations are highest in eggs (2.64 ± 0.56 μmol/mg), decreasing during tadpole life stages (0.084 ± 0.060 μmol/mg) before
rising again after metamorphosis (2.35 ± 0.45 μmol/mg). These variations in total bufadienolide levels correlate with toxicity
to Australian frog species. For example, consumption of cane toad eggs killed tadpoles of two Australian frog species (Limnodynastes convexiusculus and Litoria rothii), whereas no tadpoles died after consuming late-stage cane toad tadpoles or small metamorphs. The high toxicity of toad eggs
reflects components in the egg itself, not the surrounding jelly coat. Our results suggest a dramatic ontogenetic shift in
the danger that toads pose to native predators, reflecting rapid changes in the types and amounts of toxins during toad development.

We characterized the lability and bioaccessibility of Zn, Pb, and Cd in size-fractionated mine waste at the Tar Creek Superfund Site (Oklahoma) to assess the potential for metal transport, exposure, and subsequent bioavailability. Bulk mine waste samples contained elevated Zn (9100 +/- 2500 ppm), Pb (650 +/- 360 ppm), and Cd (42 +/- 10 ppm), while particles with the greatest potential for windborne transport and inhalation (< 10 microm) contained substantially higher concentrations, up to 220 000 ppm Zn, 16 000 ppm Pb, and 530 ppm Cd in particles < 1 microm. Although the mined ore at Tar Creek primarily consisted of refractory metal sulfides with low bioavailability, sequential extractions and physiologically based extractions indicate that physical and chemical weathering have shifted metals into relatively labile and bioaccessible mineral phases. In < 37 microm mine waste particles, 50-65% of Zn, Pb, and Cd were present in the "exchangeable" and "carbonate" sequential extraction fractions, and 60-80% of Zn, Pb, and Cd were mobilized in synthetic gastric fluid, while ZnS and PbS exhibited minimal solubility in these solutions. Our results demonstrate the importance of site-specific characterization of size-fractionated contemporary mine waste when assessing the lability and bioavailability of metals at mine-waste impacted sites. 相似文献

Caffeine users have been encouraged to consume caffeine regularly to maintain their caffeine tolerance and so avoid caffeine's acute pressor effects. In controlled conditions complete caffeine tolerance to intervention doses of 250 mg develops rapidly following several days of caffeine ingestion, nevertheless, complete tolerance is not evident for lower intervention doses. Similarly complete caffeine tolerance to 250 mg intervention doses has been demonstrated in habitual coffee and tea drinkers' but for lower intervention doses complete tolerance is not evident. This study investigated a group of habitual caffeine users following their self-determined consumption pattern involving two to six servings daily. Cardiovascular responses following the ingestion of low to moderate amounts caffeine (67, 133 and 200 mg) were compared with placebo in a double-blind, randomised design without caffeine abstinence. Pre-intervention and post-intervention (30 and 60 min) 90 s continuous cardiovascular recordings were obtained with the Finometer in both the supine and upright postures. Participants were 12 healthy habitual coffee and tea drinkers (10 female, mean age 36). Doses of 67 and 133 mg increased systolic pressure in both postures while in the upright posture diastolic pressure and aortic impedance increased while arterial compliance decreased. These vascular changes were larger upright than supine for 133 mg caffeine. Additionally 67 mg caffeine increased dp/dt and indexed peripheral resistance in the upright posture. For 200 mg caffeine there was complete caffeine tolerance. Cardiovascular responses to caffeine appear to be associated with the size of the intervention dose. Habitual tea and coffee drinking does not generate complete tolerance to caffeine as has been previously suggested. Both the type and the extent of caffeine induced cardiovascular changes were influenced by posture. 相似文献
