Sharing and Compatibility Study between Fixed Service Using High Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS) and Other Services in the 31/28 GHz Bands

In the World Radiocommunication Conference 2000 (WRC-2000), use of the 31 GHzand 28 GHz bands was permitted for the fixed service (FS) by using highaltitude platform stations (HAPS) in some countries. This paper examines thesharing and compatibility of the HAPS-based FS with the other services usingthe same and adjacent frequency bands and establishes the conditions of thecoexistence with those services. Feasibility of dynamic channel assignment(DCA) scheme among the different communication systems to facilitate thecoexistence is also studied.     

Identification and field evaluation ofAnomala octiescostata (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) sex pheromone

Using GC-EAD, the sex pheromone of the scarab beetleAnomala octiescostata was identified to be a 8:2 binary mixture of (R,Z)-5-(–)-(oct-1-enyl)oxacyclopentan-2-one and (R,Z)-5-(–)-(dec-1-enyl)oxacyclopentan-2-one. These semiochemicals have been also reported as sex pheromone constituents of otherAnomala species, either geographically or seasonally isolated fromA. octiescostata. Synthetic sex pheromone was highly attractive in the field; 0.1 mg captured significantly more males than two virgin females. Buried traps were significantly more attractive than those positioned at 30, 90, and 150 cm above the ground. In a dose-response test (0.1–100 mg), no saturation due to overdose of pheromone was observed, but in most cases, two dosages differing by 10-fold were not significantly different. Response of males to traps baited with different ratios of the two components was tested in two experiments with randomized blocks and Latin-square designs. Deviation from the natural ratio (8:2) of sex pheromone did not significantly diminish the response of males. Peak flight activity of beetle was recorded at 9:00–10:00 AM JST on sunny days in the end of April 1993.Presented in part at the 10th Annual ISCE Meeting, July 31–August 4, 1993, Clearwater Beach, Florida.     

Thermomagnetic Effects in High-Mobility PbTe Films

The narrow-gap compound semiconductor PbTe has high Hall mobility. The Fermi surface at the L-point in the Brillouin zone has large anisotropy. In this work, we measured thermomagnetic effects in PbTe thin films to confirm anisotropy of the Nernst coefficient A _Ne and show Nernst mobility from the ratio of A _Ne and the Seebeck coefficient S: μ _Ne = A _Ne/S. Angular dependences of the Nernst voltage show that A _Ne is independent of the angle between the temperature gradient and the magnetic field, because of the high L-point symmetry. The calculated Nernst mobility was compared with the Hall mobility. Because the former is smaller, the Mott equation cannot explain the Seebeck coefficient at room temperature.     

Highly sensitive pyrosequencing based on the capture of free adenosine 5' phosphosulfate with adenosine triphosphate sulfurylase

In pyrosequencing chemistry, four cascade enzymatic reactions with the catalysis of polymerase, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) sulfurylase, luciferase, and apyrase are employed. The sensitivity of pyrosequencing mainly depends on the concentration of luciferase which catalyzes a photoemission reaction. However, the side-reaction of adenosine 5' phosphosulfate (APS, an analogue of ATP) with luciferase resulted in an unavoidable background signal; hence, the sensitivity cannot be much higher due to the simultaneous increase of the background signal when a larger amount of luciferase is used. In this study, we demonstrated a sensitive pyrosequencing using a large amount of ATP sulfurylase to lower the concentration of free APS in the pyrosequencing mixture. As the complex of ATP sulfurylase and APS does not react with luciferase, a large amount of luciferase can be used to achieve a sensitive pyrosequencing reaction. This sensitivity-improving pyrosequencing chemistry allows the use of an inexpensive light sensor photodiode array for constructing a portable pyrosequencer, a potential tool in a point-of-care test (POCT).     

The mechanical properties and microstructure of SiC–AlN particulate composite

Silicon carbide (SiC) and aluminium nitride (AlN) were found to form a solid solution at temperatures above 1800°C. Based on this interesting result, the composite was fabricated by mechanical mixing of the SiC and AlN powders, and hot pressed under 40 MPa at 1950°C in an argon atmosphere. The objective was to achieve full density and minimize solid solution formation. During the sintering process, the SiC–AlN system passed through three steps to form the solid solution at the end. First, the AlN particle is vaporized from its surface; next, the evaporated AlN is deposited on the surface of the SiC grains and the AlN particle, accompanied by a reduction in its size, and finally, partial SiC and AlN solid-solution formation on the boundary of the SiC grains. Because of the AlN deposition and solid-solution formation at the boundary of SiC grains, a barrier layer was present on the surface of SiC grains. This leads to the formation of fine grains. The toughening mechanism is thought to be by thermal residual stresses, due to the difference between the coefficients of thermal expansion of the matrix SiC and that of the dispersed AlN particles, and crack deflection around the SiC grains. Therefore, it is that which improves the mechanical properties of the SiC–AlN composite. © 1998 Chapman & Hall     

In situ mRNA hybridization technique for analysis of human telomerase RNA in gastric precancerous and cancerous lesions

Telomerase, the ribonucleoprotein enzyme that elongates telomerase, is repressed in normal somatic cells but is reactivated during tumor progression. The purpose of this study was to investigate the localization of human telomerase RNA (hTR) expression in human gastric precancerous and cancerous lesions by using in situ mRNA hybridization (ISH) with avidin-biotin staining. We also examined telomerase activity in these lesions by using hybridization protection assay connected with a telomeric repeat amplification protocol (TRAP/HPA). Analyzed tissue samples were as follows; 132 cases of chronic atrophic gastritis without intestinal metaplasia, 115 incomplete-type intestinal metaplasias, 40 complete-type intestinal metaplasias, 23 hyperplastic polyps, 23 tubular adenomas and 26 adenocarcinomas. In ISH analysis, high levels of hTR expression were observed preferentially in the nuclei at the single-cell level. hTR-expressing cells in carcinomas and adenomas were significantly more frequent than those of the other lesions (P < 0.001). The expression pattern of hTR in carcinoma and adenoma tissues was heterogeneous and similar intratumor heterogeneity was detected in Ki-67 immunoreactivity. Infiltrating lymphocytes in tissue also exhibited high levels of hTR expression. In TRAP/HPA analysis, carcinomas had significantly more frequent positivity for telomerase activity and a higher level of telomerase activity than the other lesions (P < 0.05). However, the amount of telomerase activity did not parallel the expression level of hTR. Our data suggest that hTR expression increases in the early stages of stomach carcinogenesis and that sufficient synthesis of hTR is a prerequisite for telomerase reactivation in tumorigenesis.     

K-ras and p53 mutations in stage I gallbladder carcinoma with an anomalous junction of the pancreaticobiliary duct

BACKGROUND: An anomalous junction of the pancreaticobiliary duct (AJPBD) was thought to be an important risk factor for gallbladder carcinoma in Japan. In this report, we compared K-ras and p53 mutations in Stage I gallbladder carcinomas (GC) of patients with AJPBD with those in patients without AJPBD: METHODS: We examined 6 GC of patients with AJPBD and 20 GC of patients without AJPBD: Immunohistochemistry was performed for p53 protein. K-ras and p53 mutations were examined using genomic DNA extracted from the cancer regions. The methods of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) single strand conformation polymorphism analysis were performed for mutations in exons 5-8 of p53. The methods of PCR restriction fragment length polymorphism were performed for mutation in codon 12 of K-ras. RESULTS: p53 positivity was 67% in GC of patients with AJPBD and 65% in GC of patients without AJPBD: p53 mutations were found in exons 7 and 8 in GC of patients with AJPBD and in exons 5, 6, and 7 in GC of patients without AJPBD: The incidence of K-ras mutation in GC of patients with AJPBD (50%) was greater than that in patients without AJPBD (6%) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that K-ras mutation may be important in the early stage of carcinogenesis of the gallbladder mucosa with AJPBD, and that p53 mutations may also contribute to the early stage of carcinogenesis of the gallbladder mucosa, regardless of AJPBD:     

Effect of wall slip on blown film thickness distribution

One of the most important materials for blown film is high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) with wide molecular weight distribution. First, we computed a wall stress at the entrance of a spiral groove in a particular die during blown film processing on a particular condition, to which a similar condition is widely utilized in a film works. The computed value is about 170 kPa, while the HDPE melt slips at die wall at stresses above approximately 50 kPa. The stress of 170 kPa is sufficiently large for the slip occurrence of the melt. Then, we investigated the effects of wall slip and melt visosity on film thickness distribution in the circumferential direction; the distribution tends to decrease with decreasing wall slip and melt viscosity. This tendency is explained by considering flow distribution in a spiral mandrel die and polymer melt flow characteristics.
