Characterization of Pseudomonas paucimobilis FP2001 which forms flagella depending upon the presence of rhamnose in liquid medium

A bacterial strain FP2001 isolated from the exudate of land reclaimed for municipal waste was identified as Pseudomonas paucimobilis. Cells of strain FP2001 were mobile by means of polar monotrichous flagellum, only when rhamnose was added as a carbon source in the liquid medium. The replacement of rhamnose by arabinose, galactose, glucose or xylose did not lead to the formation of flagella.     

Amorphous-silicon FET array for LCD panel

A small 20 × 20 dot matrix array of a FET has been fabricated on a glass substrate using a-Si films as the semiconductor and silicon nitride deposited from a N2-SiH4 mixture as the gate insulator. Good operation is obtained for both TN-mode and GH-mode in transparent-type LCDs. The improved fabrication process and structure are reported.     

Gabexate mesilate plus intravenous gammaglobulin treatment in children with diarrhoea-associated haemolytic uraemic syndrome

Bladder exstrophy is an unusual congenital anomaly. Patients becoming pregnant with such anomaly after surgical repair are even rarer. The present case reports a lower segment Caesarean section delivery of a living healthy baby in a woman who had been operated on for bladder exstrophy at the age of 18 years. This is the first case of this type seen in our institution in 35 years.     

Time-dependent gain and absorption in a 5 J UV preionized XeCl laser

The operating characteristics of a wide aperture (5 × 4.5 cm²), high output energy (5 J), UV preionized XeCl laser are described. The time dependence of the gain and absorption have been measured for both He and Ne based laser gas mixes. These measurements were correlated with the discharge current and voltage waveforms. For optimized laser gas mixes and pressures, the absorption for He based laser mixes was ten times higher than for Ne based mixes. Absorption data are also presented for the component gas mixes.     

Differential PSK System with Nonredundant Error Correction

Theoretical analysis and experimental results for a DPSK system with nonredundant error correction are described. The error correction capability of the proposed demodulation method is achieved without utilizing additional bandwidth. The demodulator utilizes outputs of differentially coherent detectors that employ the received signal delayed by two or more time slots as references. These outputs are shown to be the parity check sums of two or more conSecutive outputs of the conventional detector under noise-free conditions. The error rate performance of the proposed demodulation method is theoretically and experimentally studied for quaternary DPSK. Experimental results agree with the theory, which indicates that performance is superior to conventional DPSK by 1.2 dB, but poorer than coherent detection by 1.3 dB. This method can be applied effectively to TDMA communications and to on-board regenerative repeaters.     

Optimal alignments of biological sequences on a microcomputer

An algorithm and a program have been developed which enable optimal alignments of biological sequences on an 8-bit microcomputer. The compiled program can process sequences up to 1000 residues on a Commodore 64. Since this program was written originally in the BASIC language, it may readily be adapted to other microcomputers with small changes.
