Alginate colloid solution containing electrochemically synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was investigated regarding
the nanoparticle stabilization and possibilities for production of alginate based nanocomposite hydrogels in different forms.
AgNPs were shown to continue to grow in alginate solutions for additional 3 days after the synthesis by aggregative mechanism
and Ostwald ripening. Thereafter, the colloid solution remains stable for 30 days and could be used alone or in mixtures with
aqueous solutions of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) while preserving AgNPs as verified by UV–Vis spectroscopy studies. We have optimized techniques
for production of Ag/alginate microbeads and Ag/alginate/PVA beads, which were shown to efficiently release AgNPs decreasing
the Escherichia coli concentration in suspensions for 99.9% over 24 h. Furthermore, Ag/hydrogel discs based on alginate, PVA and PVP were produced
by freezing-thawing technique allowing adjustments of hydrogel composition and mechanical properties as demonstrated in compression

High dietary sodium intake (DSI) represents a major health‐related public issue in most countries all over the world. Such a diet can lead to increased risk of hypertension and related cardiovascular diseases. This situation has resulted in important public policies for various salt reduction strategies. One of these is based on the use of salt substitutes or salts with reduced sodium content. Among several options, potassium chloride (KCl) has proved to be a key nutritional ingredient for this purpose. It provides similar properties like common salt (NaCl), but with several unwanted side effects, of which the most important have relatively offensive side tastes: bitter, acrid, and metallic. To successfully formulate KCl‐based salt substitutes, numerous taste‐improving agents and formulation concepts have been used. The field of salt substitutes is mainly described in the patent literature. Since patents are both scientific and legal documents, careful and critical consideration is required when using them as a source of scientific information. This review brings a deep insight into the area of KCl‐based salt substitutes with a focus on the patent literature through the eyes of food science and technology. The most important classes of taste‐improving agents that have been employed in numerous formulation concepts of KCl‐based salt substitutes are nutritionally acceptable mineral salts; food acids, amino acids, and their nutritionally acceptable salts; simple carbohydrates and sugar substitutes; food polymers; umami ingredients; spices, vegetables, and flavors; miscellaneous taste improvers; as well as a plethora of their specific combinations. Cisplatin (Cis-diamminedichloroplatinum II, CP) is an important chemotherapeutic agent, useful in the treatment of several cancers, but with several side effects such as nephrotoxicity. The present study investigated the possible protective effect of selenium (Se) against CP-induced oxidative stress in the rat kidneys. Male Wistar albino rats were injected with a single dose of cisplatin (7 mg CP/kg b.m., i.p.) and selenium (6 mg Se/kg b.m, as Na(2)SeO(3), i.p.), alone or in combination. The obtained results showed that CP increased lipid peroxidation (LPO) and decreased reduced glutathione (GSH) concentrations, suggesting the CP-induced oxidative stress, while Se treatment reversed this change to control values. Acute intoxication of rats with CP was followed by statistically significant decreased activity of antioxidant defense enzymes: superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST). Treatment with Se reversed CP-induced alterations of antioxidant defense enzyme activities and significantly prevented the CP-induced kidney damage. 相似文献

Silver metal nanoparticle (NP) enhanced fluorescence is investigated in thin films of cyanobacterial Photosystem I trimer complexes (PSI) by correlating confocal laser scanning microscopy, dark-field imaging, and fluorescence lifetime measurements. PSI represents an interesting light-harvesting complex with a 20 nm diameter that is not uniformly contained within the surface-localized plasmon field of the NPs. With weak far-field illumination, 5- to 20-fold fluorescence enhancement is observed for PSI complexes adjacent to NPs, arising from efficient nanoparticle light collection and subsequent localized, surface plasmon excitation of PSI. Enhanced PSI fluorescence is detected most prominently near "rafts" of aggregated NPs that more completely fill the confocal field of view. These results demonstrate opportunities to probe energy transfer within photosynthetic complexes using plasmonic excitation and to design nanostructures for optimizing artificial light-harvesting systems. 相似文献

Biosensors need to meet the rising food industry demand for sensitive, selective, safe, and fast food safety quality control. Disposable colorimetric sensors based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and localized surface plasmon resonance are low-cost and easy-to-perform devices intended for rapid point-of-need measurements. Recent studies demonstrate various facile and versatile AuNPs-based analytical platforms for the detection of bacteria and their toxins in milk, meat, and other foods. In this review, we introduce the general characteristics and mechanisms of AuNPs calorimetric biosensors, and highlight optimizations needed to strengthen and improve the quality of devices for their application in food matrices. 相似文献

The polyaniline thin film electrode and powder have been synthesized on graphite electrodes from 0.5 M hydrochloric acid solution under galvanostatic conditions. The water insoluble and acetone soluble polyaniline mass fractions of the powder, as well as the polymerization efficiency, based on the emeraldine salt have been determined. MgH2 powder samples have been irradiated with 120 keV Ar+8 ions with different ion fluencies ranging from 1012 to 1016 ions/cm2. Irradiation effects are estimated by SRIM calculations, and investigated experimentally using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The observed changes of structure and vibrational spectra are elaborated, their consequences on hydrogen bonding in MgH2 discussed, and influence on H-desorption properties investigated by Temperature Programmed Desorption (TPD) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) techniques. It has been established that near-surface defects have a predominant influence on decreasing the H-desorption temperature. Variations of Raman, TPD and DSC spectra with irradiation conditions suggest that there are several mechanisms of dehydriding, and that they depend on defect concentration, interaction and ordering. 相似文献
