Pacific salmon were introduced to the Great Lakes in the 1960s and now support major recreational fishery. Population declines resulting from invasive species have prompted agencies to consider diversifying sport fisheries through stocking. Atlantic salmon are native to Lake Ontario, but a small fishery has developed in northern Lake Huron since the 1990s that appears suited to the Lake Huron food web leading to requests for increased stocking by anglers and consideration by agencies. However, no study has evaluated the trophic ecology of Atlantic salmon in relation to other salmonine predators in northern Lake Huron. In this study, we used stable isotopes of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N), along with mercury (Hg) concentrations to assess resource use, niche overlap, and contaminant accumulation in Atlantic salmon compared to select Lake Huron predators. Atlantic salmon exhibited considerable niche overlap with Chinook and coho salmon but were strongly differentiated from lake trout. In addition, we observed that Atlantic salmon had similar Hg concentrations as coho but were lower than both Chinook salmon and lake trout. Based upon the relationship between fish size, δ15N, and Hg, Atlantic salmon bioaccumulate Hg similarly to Pacific salmon but likely have lower consumptive demands than Chinook salmon. Continued attention should be placed on understanding how Atlantic salmon fit into the current Lake Huron food web in order to evaluate the long-term efficacy of the Atlantic salmon stocking program.  相似文献

High-energy Ni-rich lithium transition metal oxides such as Li[Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1]O2 (NCM811) are appealing positive electrode materials for next-generation lithium batteries. However, the high sensitivity toward moist air during storage and the high reactivity with common organic electrolytes, especially at elevated temperatures, are hindering their commercial use. Herein, an effective strategy is reported to overcome these issues by coating the NCM811 particles with a lithium phosphonate functionalized poly(aryl ether sulfone). The application of this coating allows for a substantial reduction of lithium-based surface impurities (e.g., LiOH, Li2CO3) and, generally, the suppression of detrimental side reactions upon both storage and cycling. As a result, the coated NCM811-based cathodes reveal superior Coulombic efficiency and cycling stability at ambient and, particularly, at elevated temperatures up to 60 ° C (a temperature at which the non-coated NCM811 electrodes rapidly fail) owing to the formation of a stable cathode electrolyte interphase with enhanced Li+ transport kinetics and the well-retained layered crystal structure. These results render the herein presented coating strategy generally applicable for high-performance lithium battery cathodes.  相似文献

The identification of materials suitable for non-volatile phase-change memory applications is driven by the need to find materials with tailored properties for different technological applications and the desire to understand the scientific basis for their unique properties. Here, we report the observation of a distinctive and characteristic feature of phase-change materials. Measurements of the dielectric function in the energy range from 0.025 to 3 eV reveal that the optical dielectric constant is 70-200% larger for the crystalline than the amorphous phases. This difference is attributed to a significant change in bonding between the two phases. The optical dielectric constant of the amorphous phases is that expected of a covalent semiconductor, whereas that of the crystalline phases is strongly enhanced by resonant bonding effects. The quantification of these is enabled by measurements of the electronic polarizability. As this bonding in the crystalline state is a unique fingerprint for phase-change materials, a simple scheme to identify and characterize potential phase-change materials emerges.  相似文献

In three experiments, rats were exposed to a flavor preference procedure in which flavor A was paired with the reinforcer and flavor B presented alone in Context 1, while in Context 2 flavor A was presented alone and flavor B with the reinforcer. With fructose as the reinforcer both two- and one-bottle training procedures produced a context-dependent preference (Experiments 1 and 2). With maltodextrin as the reinforcer two-bottle training produced a context-dependent preference (Experiment 1). Following one-bottle training with maltodextrin reinforcement rats demonstrated a context-dependent preference when the conditioned stimulus (CS)- was presented with a dilute solution of the reinforcer during training (Experiment 3B) but not when the CS- was presented alone (Experiments 2 and 3A). The pattern of results with maltodextrin reinforcement suggests that there was competition between the cue flavors and the taste of the maltodextrin as predictors of the postingestive consequences of the maltodextrin reinforcer. The fact that rats were able to display context-dependent flavor preferences is consistent with the idea that learned flavor preferences rely on the sort of cue-consequence associations that underpin other forms of conditioning which produce accurate performance on biconditional tasks. The differences between fructose- and maltodextrin-based preferences are discussed in terms of configural and elemental learning processes. Interest in Citizen Science has grown significantly over the last decade. Much of this interest can be traced to the provision of sophisticated platforms that enable seamless collaboration, cooperation and coordination between professional and amateur scientists. In terms of field research, smart-phones have been widely adopted, automating data collection and enriching observations with photographs, sound recordings and GPS coordinates using embedded sensors hosted on the device itself. Interaction with external sensor platforms such as those normally used in the environmental monitoring domain is practically null-existent. Remedying this deficiency would have positive ramifications for both the professional and citizen science communities. To illustrate the relevant issues, this paper considers a common problem, that of data collection in sparse sensor networks, and proposes a practical solution that would enable citizen scientists act as Human Relays thus facilitating the collection of data from such networks. Broader issues necessary for enabling intelligent sensing using common smart-phones and embedded sensing technologies are then discussed.  相似文献

As part of an effort to develop a new, non-vacuum-processed substrate for high current superconducting films, thin films of LaAlO3 and NdAlO3 were deposited on biaxially textured (100) nickel substrates using a solution deposition technique. On heating to 1150°C in Ar-4% H2 for 1 h, epitaxial films were obtained. Out-of-plane alignment was confirmed by obtaining rocking curves of the (002) plane of the LaAlO3 (full width at half-maximum (fwhm) = 7.2°) and the NdAlO3 (fwhm = 5.8°) films. In-plane alignment was demonstrated by obtaining phi scans of the (110) plane of the LaAlO3 (fwhm = 13.4°) and the NdAlO3 (fwhm = 8.8°) films. Grain alignment in the films is approximately equivalent to the alignment of the Ni substrate. Analysis of pole figures indicated that in both films there are two in-plane orientations present, the major being (001)[100] and the minor (001)[110].  相似文献

An estimate of the quantity of toxic coke deposited on fresh and regenerated Pt/Alj2O3 catalyst has been determined for methylcyclopentane (MCP) reforming in a Berty CSTR at 390°C, W/F=0·11 g min cm-3, total pressure of 1 atm and MCP partial pressure of 9·2 × 10-2 atm in H2 or N2 carrier. Eleven cycles consisting each of catalyst deactivation, regeneration and reduction were investigated with 3 in H2 and 8 in N2. Oxidizable (primary) coke deposits were higher in N2. However, higher levels of toxic (secondary) coke were deposited in H2. The ratio of oxidizable to toxic coke lies between 1-15×103 in H2 and 22 - 55 × 103 in N2 The coke-time profiles for secondary coke removal exhibited maxima suggestive of three types of secondary coke with varying reactivity in H2. Furthermore, the results strongly suggest that the cokes were layered on acidic coke forming sites with the solid phase transformation of primary to secondary coke occurring at the catalyst-coke interface.  相似文献

Attempts to prepare the [As(NtBu)3]3− trianion by the reaction of As(NMe2)3 with [tBuNHLi]n (1:3 monomer equiv.) proved unsuccessful. However, if the reaction is carried out with an excess of tBuNH2 (3 equiv.) the target complex [{As(NtBu)3}2Li6] (1) is obtained. This present study was carried out to evaluate the effects of gamma irradiation on the fatty acids (FA) and mureins composition of two different radiotolerant bacteria. Bacillus cereus LSPQ 2872 and Salmonella Typhi ATCC 19430 were used for this study. The bacterial strains were treated with a sublethal radiation dose of 1 kGy to cause a cellular damage. Gas chromatography (GC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis were performed to demonstrate respectively the modification of the FA composition and the changes in muropeptide profile. Results obtained show, for both bacteria, that this treatment had a significant effect (P ≤ 0.05) on the FA content with an increase of unsaturated FA percentage. Substantial changes were also noticed for the relative percentage and the number of the muropeptides. This study represents one of the few to demonstrate the modifications on bacterial membrane as a cellular response to survive the ionising radiation stress.  相似文献
