The effects of interactions between nonlinear subprocesses on the stabilizability of plantwide systems via the concept of dissipative systems are studied. Conditions for which controlled variables of each interconnected subprocess can be driven to and maintained at their desired values are established through the application of interconnection decoupling techniques. The resulting decoupling feedback law encodes the interaction effects between subprocesses and determines the required information structure for achieving desired control performance using distributed control laws. Does psi exist? D. J. Bem (2011) conducted 9 studies with over 1,000 participants in an attempt to demonstrate that future events retroactively affect people's responses. Here we discuss several limitations of Bem's experiments on psi; in particular, we show that the data analysis was partly exploratory and that one-sided p values may overstate the statistical evidence against the null hypothesis. We reanalyze Bem's data with a default Bayesian t test and show that the evidence for psi is weak to nonexistent. We argue that in order to convince a skeptical audience of a controversial claim, one needs to conduct strictly confirmatory studies and analyze the results with statistical tests that are conservative rather than liberal. We conclude that Bem's p values do not indicate evidence in favor of precognition; instead, they indicate that experimental psychologists need to change the way they conduct their experiments and analyze their data. LeCompte (see record 1995-04375-001) showed that the irrelevant speech effect—that is, the impairment of performance by the presentation of irrelevant background speech—extends to free recall, recognition, and cued recall. The present experiments extended the irrelevant speech effect to the missing-item task (Experiments 1 and 2), thereby contradicting a key prediction of the changing state hypothesis, which states that tasks that do not involve serial rehearsal should not be affected by the presence of irrelevant speech. Temporal distinctiveness theory provides an alternative explanation of the irrelevant speech effect. Experiment 3 tested and confirmed a unique prediction of this theory. Alum sludge discharge effects on a natural wetland on the shores of Lake Victoria at Gaba in Uganda has been investigated. The water quality in the swamp, the sediment chemistry and plant growth and productivity were monitored. The subsequent application of alum sludge discharges shows no immediate, noticeable, adverse overall effects on the water quality and sediment chemistry. A distinct effect on plant productivity was noted in Cyperus papyrus L. the dominant macrophyte in the Gaba swamp resulting in a low productivity rate of 5.1 g/m2 d and the apparent phasing out of this macrophyte in the swamp. Phragmites mauritianus (Kunth) exhibited better tolerance to alum sludge. Clear indications are cited of the ecosystem degrading and cumulative effects being marked over a longer time frame. 相似文献

The chlorophyll (Chl) concentration in the seawater of the Bay of Bengal (BoB) and the Arabian Sea (AS) changes most during the Indian Ocean dipole (IOD) mode event. The empirical orthogonal function (EOF) of several oceanographic and atmospheric data was studied, using 9 years (1998–2006) of reanalysed satellite data. The variation of Chl during the period of September to November (SON) over the 9 years has been studied in this article. It has been found that significant enhancement of Chl in the BoB takes place during IOD years owing to the surface wind action, that is, wind-stress curl (WC), which favours the upwelling process, whereas the AS shows a decline in concentration of Chl owing to a reduced open ocean upwelling process. 相似文献

Nickel-alumina nanocomposites were produced by electrocodeposition utilizing two electrode configurations, a parallel plate electrode (PPE) and impinging jet electrode (IJE), and various current modulations, i.e. direct current (DC), pulse plating (PP) and pulse reverse plating (PRP). Particle incorporation increased linearly with the particle loading of the electrolyte for all deposition conditions studied. A maximum incorporation of 12 vol.% of 50 nm γ-Al2O3 particles in a nickel matrix was achieved using an unsubmerged IJE system, while PP and PRP resulted in composites with particle contents up to 11 vol.% of 13 nm γ-Al2O3 particles. In general, nanocomposites showed higher hardness compared to the pure nickel coatings. The enhanced hardness of the composite films was associated with modifications in the microstructure of the nickel matrix as well as with the nanoparticle incorporation. The pure nickel deposits exhibited a strong (1 0 0) texture. With increasing plating current density and particle incorporation, a variation in the crystallite size and a loss of texture was observed. 相似文献

Anisole and fluoroanisoles display distinct conformational preferences, as evident from a survey of their crystal structures. In addition to altering the free ligand conformation, various degrees of fluorination have a strong impact on physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties. Analysis of anisole and fluoroanisole matched molecular pairs in the Pfizer corporate database reveals interesting trends: 1) PhOCF3 increases log D by ~1 log unit over PhOCH3 compounds; 2) PhOCF3 shows lower passive permeability despite its higher lipophilicity; and 3) PhOCF3 does not appreciably improve metabolic stability over PhOCH3. Emerging from the investigation, difluoroanisole (PhOCF2H) strikes a better balance of properties with noticeable advantages of log D and transcellular permeability over PhOCF3. Synthetic assessment illustrates that the routes to access difluoroanisoles are often more straightforward than those for trifluoroanisoles. Whereas replacing PhOCH3 with PhOCF3 is a common tactic to optimize ADME properties, our analysis suggests PhOCF2H may be a more attractive alternative, and greater exploitation of this motif is recommended. 相似文献

An optical fibre reactor with 30 hexagonal-shaped channels distributed within the optical fibre structure was investigated as a gas-phase photocatalytic reactor. TiO2 photocatalyst, with SiO2 sol acting as a binder, was coated on the channel walls at a thickness of 1.5 μm. Effective light propagation lengths of 3.4 and 4.9 cm were observed for incidental angles of 81.5° and 87.1°, respectively. The TiO2-coated channelled optical fibre reactor (COFR) was assessed for the photocatalytic degradation of gas-phase ethylene. The photocatalytic reaction rate of ethylene degradation was linear with respect to the incident photons. The reaction rate order for the incident photons was determined to be 0.93. Despite a longer effective light propagation length for an incidental angle of 87.1°, the quantum yield was independent of the incidental angle. The independence of the quantum yield on the incident photons and the angle of light incidence was attributed to the COFR design, where the propagating light was wholly confined within the reactor and, in turn, more effectively utilised by the TiO2. 相似文献
